I'm five days into my trial account, so, about as noob as they come. After the tutorial, I spent a few hours in a Navitas before I bout an Imicus. Basically all I've done is mine with that while browsing the forums.
Tried some of the level one missions in the Imicus but just got squashed. So I've bought a destroyer, a Catalyst, while I'm waiting to get a cruiser. Just want to try some other things to help me make up my mind before the trial ends.
So, holy cow, there are six more high slots on it than I had before. What on earth do I put in all those slots? I'd like to have some flexibility to try different things, unless slotting it that way makes no sense.
I'm sure in a few days this question will seem as silly to me as it does to you now. In the meantime, any help would be appreciated. This community has seemed much more noob-friendly than in some other MMO's.

Well I've never used the Catalyst for anything other than a Salvager (more on that later) so as far as fitting it with guns Im not an expert :) However, you can check out the Ship Fitting thread for a good start on some ideas for a Catalyst loadout for various scenarios. ----------------------------------------- Don't submit to stupid rules Be yourself and not a fool Don't accept average habits Open your heart and push the limits |

I would fit it with as many small hybrid guns as possible, havent tried the catalyst just the trasher and the comorant. Think a good setup would be 8 small hybrids, a afterburner in the mids, damage controll small repper and perhaps a plate in the lows. Not sure what Id fit in the missing mid, perhaps a cap booster. Think that fitting is pretty low in required skills, and doubt it would have problems with lvl 1 missions, can always warp out and sit by a planet a while and repair.

Edited by: Tutsunucann on 21/05/2007 23:40:03 You should definitely fit as many hybrid guns in the upper slots as you possibly can. Destroyers are 'the best defense is a good offense' ship, designed to be an anti-frigate platform. Properly fitted it will handle any level 1 combat mission and belt rats in high-sec space with ease.
I personally fitted as many 125mm railguns as I could manage, on my destroyer. Later with more skills I was able to fit the 150mm variety.
It's a good rule of thumb to use all your available slots for something! :)

You should be able to fit 7 or 8 125mm railguns with starting skills.
Put in long-range ammo, I'd go with Iridium or Tungsten. It's not a close-in ship. The idea is to put all guns on one ship at a time, and take them all out fast, from range, before then can get in close to you. It does really well in L1 missions in this capacity. Don't bother taking it into an L2 though, it'll be chewed up and spit back out.
Later on, when you're running higher-level missions and have salvaging skills, you'll want to keep a destroyer around with 4-5 salvagers and 3-4 tractor beams in the high slots to clean up after the missions.
As for trying different things: As far as guns go, you're typically better off picking a single gun and fitting all of that type, and design your ship setup to work at that range. Fitting 150mm and 75mm guns on one destroyer, for instance, will mean that half the time the 75mm are out-of-range, and the other half-the-time the target is probably too close or too fast for the 150's to hit as well.

I've had a Catalyst about 2 weeks, and it's my best ship! High: 2x Salvager I 1x Tractor Beam I 5x "Scout" accelerator cannon (125mm railgun) I load 2 with Tungsten (range), 3 with Lead (damage) Med: Small shield booster 1x Mn Afterburner I (doubles max velocity) Low: 1x CoProcessor I add 7% to CPU 1x 50mm Tungsten plates (armor +131) Drone: 1x Hobgoblin I
Use this with great success for solo ratting in 0.8 or 0.7 space. Visit each Asteroid Belt in turn, kill rats, loot/salvage. There are usually existing wrecks, use afterburner to get close and salvage them (Illegal to loot any that aren't yours, but you can salvage freely.)
I've made 14 million in one 2-hour stint in 0.8 space!

Hassan's loadout is great - I'd run something very similar.
If you don't have salvage skills yet, then start training soon. In the meantime the Salvagers and tractor are pretty useless, so I'd add at least a small nosferatu (more usually known as just 'nos')into the high slots.
The nos will drain power from your enemy's capacitor and add it to your own. You need to be up close and personal for the nos to work (within 10km, I think) so you might want to swap the rails out and get blasters. Set your orbit to 5000m and go in blasting and NOSing. The extra cap may seem insignificant, but getting used to using a NOS is (I believe) essential for later life (I have 2 med NOS on my Myrmidon). Don't forget to get your drone out there for extra damage as well. Once my ex-corpmate had fitted it with t2 blasters (neutrons or electrons, can't remember), t2 ammo and some tank - it _REALLY_ hurts. Although lon-grange fitting is more efficient for missions. With higher skills you may try to take destroyer for level 2 missions, it's quite fun.

This should work just as well in a .5 system, with higher bountys and better loot/salvgae :) Destroyers are pure destruction vs frigs, so by all means do not restrict yourself to those crappy .7 rats. If you feel you have enough isk to risk your ship/implants, you could even dip into .4 and .3 and try some cruisers.
Destroyers are a really good way to get started ratting, with the skills to salvage and use a tractor, the destroyers plentiful high slots makes this a no-brainer. -=^=-

I forgot to mention - don't sell your destroyer when you outlive it.
Buy a stack of tractors and salvagers and set up your salvage boat. After you complete a mission, take the salvage boat back and clean up for lots of ISK.
e.g. level 2 Blockade rewards: 250k ISK Mission Rewards (including time bonus) 500k bounties on enemies 800k on loot >2,500k on salvaged materials
So learning salvage has the potential to more than double your income for a mission - it does take a little time to salvage (about 20-50% of the time taken for the mission itself).

Destroyers are a waste of time for rookie pilots. You do not have the required skills to take advantage or it. You would be better off in a Tristran... -- Rgds Mike WWW.Dead-Fish.com Deep Sea Daddies... |

Destroyers are hard to fit, hard to use and may be a bit expensive to fit properly for a new pilot.
sure it rocks for level 1 missions even with quite low skills in fitting, but if you want to do anything more, like level 2 missions, you'll get shot in a second if not properly fitted and if you don't know how to handle it to take advantage of the range bonuses. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast ! Edited by: Pinnie on 24/05/2007 13:49:10 This used to be a pretty debated subject ages ago.
"Should I get a destroyer or go straight for the cruiser?"
The biggest issue I see is that you are a true, blue noob, and I mean that in the most respectful way. The problem with this is that you probably don't even have the proper skills trained to fly either a destroyer or a cruiser. There is a lot more to flying ships in this game than just having the required skills to fly them. Also, it seems as if you're Gallente, you could skip the cruiser phase all together and move upto a Myrmidon, assuming you had the funds(and the skills required, besides BC2)...
Linkage
Check out that site, should get you down with the basics(seems to be down so check out this one). This link also has the gist of what to train for basics:
http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=299970
I just prefer the other one since it is more organized and easier for noobs to understand and relate too. Fyi, learning skills will tremendously decrease your training time if you want to take a few weeks out of your combat training to train them. Check out a program called EVEMon, this is a wonderful program that will help you a lot.
