a friend of mine got me playing "Uncharted waters online/Great voyage online"
and it totally blows eve out of the water.*pun*
Koei havnt released it in North America or Europe (they dont plan to it seems.)
so I ended up playing on the Taiwan server with the Traditional Chinese Client.
and Damn, I am impressed.
theres alot of things that could be stol...I mean, learned from that game.
I did about 70 missions for the English and NONE of those are repeats!! they have variations thats always different! the low risk ones I done are: -rescue (that involves disabling a ship but not destroying it and retrieve the person/cargo, involves boarding fights.) -capture, (same as above, except with character duel in land ones, but crew for sea since the target dont come willingly) -destory/courier/scout/trade/explore and pvp missions. (we have those)
pvp and pve are very similar. but alot of it comes down to out manvouvering your oppoents and avoid taking hits, its a bit more twitch and direct (sinking/boarding fights.) but less predictable due to wind/ocean conditions/skills/direction you are sailing /planning. the only real noticable difference btwn player and npcs are that I noticed so far is that the npcs never runs out of amno...oh and that the NPC pirates actually likes to pirate you more than sinking you. I havnt fought faction navies yet so I dunno about those guys.
oh, and theres no blobing in that game. since theres Friendly fire =P (and that you are restricted with a Weapons/firing arc.)
my friend sank/disabled my ship when I was "tackling" an npc and got in the line of fire. (Galloen's broadside: = dead sloop.)
thats for the navy part of it (so far, with me in my little 10 men combat sloop, so havnt seen it all yet)...
they also managed to make crew and supplies VERY managable. and fun.. you feel connected to your men but dont see them unless they are special .. (PUN! and seaman joke!) , you can hire vice-captians and other npc that helps you...my friend have npc servant boys that follows her on land. I didnt ask why she dress them with short shorts though.
you can actually pirate someone =P REAL pirating. board ship, crew vs crew battle, steal cargo, and run... lol
maybe thats why they have a bank for you to store things..(yes, another player stole my entire newb wallet =P..)
but yeah, it uses the UO skill system though, is bette r than the exp grind..but still, Eve is better on in that my book. but at the same time, your losses (with exception to wallet) isnt that great, you dont actually lose skills (but hey, we dont in eve anyways unless we do something stupid.) and that you dont actually die.. you just end up unconscious (land avatar fights) or floating when beaten (sea battle)...
but yes, you will be robbed. by players AND THE NPC =P money/item that went to NPC disappears into thin air though. you wont get it back even if you come back and beat them.
okay abit more on the avatar/in person bit: clothing/amour is stunning!!! my friend (a RL girl.) had about 100 different costumes..(all functional/amour/bonus/whatever, she has musical instruments she can play too.. the skill supposity boost the crew's moral when at sea, but the music is great on land!) and yeah, in person fights, uses the old Sig Meyer's pirates's style of combat.
but yeah, if anybody at CCP can read Japanese/Korean/Chinese Tradition/Chinese Simplified. download the 3 gig mb client, get on a trail and see the game itself.(it asks for ID, but random numbers on ID part is fine.)
ALOT can be added to Eve that makes EvE.. feels alive. the immerson thing, and not just a spaceship combat simulator with market to support combat =P
oh! and one thing thats always true shown in that game and RL: Alcohol makes men happy! buy the crew a round of drinks to reduce tireness and improve loyality!
I laughed so hard at the comments by my crew and the surrounding NPCS when I told the barkeep that I want to buy everybody a drink....

errr dunno the meaning of that reference..but if you mean people in town spamming their wares.. then not really.. since it does the shop thing... when in "shop" mode, your char have a bar above it stating what is sold and how much... and just right click on char to open his "store"
but yeah, my only complaint is lack of local channels...
and yeah, that you need to train the languages before talking to some people from some countries (I remember one of them being Nordic that I didnt learn in game.)
it uses the SWG pre CU system for that.
oh and apparently the Japanese verison of: yarrrr is @@@@@@!!!
cant traslate the Chinese Verison though, is more like.. ARrrr!
oh, and the housing system is kinda like UO, but with apartments, ... in any city, to get to your apartment, just talk to the guard outside and to go up to your home...
I didnt have one cause I am poor, but my friend have a n npc bulter that manages a shop or something for her...

Edited by: Jeff Spartan on 22/05/2007 05:20:18 seems like a nice game, nice AI too, we do need better NPCs in EvE, but I am not so sure about the land fights, I mean I want to relax when entering a station not start getting agressed by crazy kids... Friendly Fire Idea is a good one, but then EvE would have to be far mor responsive to maneuvering and the mouse doesnt give u too many options... I mean, some of the ideas are great I hope your carebear hero "Oveur" sees the thread and takes some ideas... anyways, nice post... GL
oh, I LOVED the idea of having slaves NPCs, hehehe, lol, cool

well, is weird, I chose this to show cause..is the only vid that shows abit of everything from on land/in character, naval, and naval tactical views...
but by god the day you hear Cantonese Rap will be the day you want to shoot yourself...
so.. the "japanese rock opera" isnt that bad...

The game looks like a bad WoW with ships...
But one thing I would like to see in Eve is getting the hits (for example, 157.7 damage) shown as animated popups when you hit. I think it would look good, and certainly better than the current rectangle in the middle of the screen.

Wow, and I thought Eve's HUD was annoying and cluttering up my view. That's just too ugly.

yeah the graphics engine is outdated, 2004 and didnt really upgrade...
on the plus side, I was connecting from Canada to Taiwan.. and not a bit of lag even when I am around 60 other ships going into/leaving port... -Siggi- ""PvP" isn't only direct person to person combat, it can be very indirect. well, is certainly different...(but yeah, GVO is HUGE and immense...I mean, in Eve, you seen one system, you probley seen many others =P ... but this...)
yeah I am disappointed that Koei doesnt really do much work in getting in released in North America/Europe...
I mean, I can read Chinese Traditional and Japanese (slowly).. but in a text heavy game like that. yeah...
edit: but key thing I want from GVO for EvE is.. the Ability to pirate someone's cargo hold without popping and (blowing up) the cargo lol -Siggi- ""PvP" isn't only direct person to person combat, it can be very indirect. Sounds like Tortuga gone MMO which is totally awesome. My favorite parts from your text:
- friendly fire - environmental conditions affecting the actual gameplay - interesting missions - UO skill system! - UO-style death penalty!!!

Maybe thats what EVE has needed for a long time now..
the ability to take a ship no matter its size down to x% hull and then through the use of a specific mod take items from the cargo. But then whats stopping you from blowing them up anyway after taking all the nice items? Perhaps a double sec hit, meh whatever,
