Given that vwhen I last ran missions, I used to switch between T2 heavies and T2 Sentries depending on the mission, I would't bother with T1 sentries at all - especially with SDI only at II. morons- sting like a butterfly and-ápost like a bee. |

thanks i did put in t2 sentrys with EFT and the dps is still a fair bit less, so im guessing its more about having a longer range etc |

I haven't run any missions in a few months, but when I did, I almost always ran them faster with Sentries than heavies (dominix).
The ONLY time heavies seemed better were missions with lots of travel between gates. And honestly I tended to turn those down as a result.
Sentries have 2 big plusses
1- Immediate damage. No need to fly to target 2. augmented damage using rigs. |

With a sentry damage augmentation rigged domi it's a different issue of course, but I never bothered with sentries at all until I could use T2. (Doesn't make much sense to sentry-rig a Phoon, Geddon, Vindicator or Mach after all...).
I love them on a specifically fit Ishtar, but with the typical mission-boats I used, drones where just the icing on the cake anyway and I preferred to have therm just fly along killing random stuff....
On single room missions you don't move in anyway (pirate invasion comes to mind), Sentries use to be better - just pull full room aggro, lauch them and fire away. with anything requiring movement, I used Heavies. morons- sting like a butterfly and-ápost like a bee. |

Yeah atm I can just semi afk and do other things whilst they go off and kill stuff, and don't really want to sacrifice that to get the sentry drone damage up with the aug's so I guess i'll stick to what iv'e been doing |

Sentries have tank, and should stay within scoop range. |

I used heavies if i had to stay mobile for whatever reason (traveling to another gate, lighter tank ship, have to get something from a container etc), or when a lot of rats were close together.
I use sentries when i am in a good tanky ship like a Domi or RS, and i dont have to move far.
Remember that like heavies, Sentries are not equal! Some are high damage and short range (Gardes), others are very long range with less damage (bouncers) etc. The Apostle : I want a kangeroo Captain Kirk : Silly Austrians Sarmatiko : Let me guess: you're from US? I decided to try sentries on my semi-retired mission Domi the other week in a handful of level 4's. T1 sentries with no rigs or drone mods (barring the drone range hi-slot mod).
Personally I found them, even with only lvl 2 in the Sentry skill, to be much more useable than heavies. Mostly because of the instant long range damage (I was using Wardens) and lack of travel time. They're great at popping frigs and cruisers on approach in double quick time.
Granted, my Ogre II's did get used in the end, but only because I was against Merc and Serpentis ships which often like to burn into sub 10km ranges.
tl:dr, even T1 sentries are worth it for PVE unless it's one of the few missions where you spawn directly in a mob of rats. |

As others have stated, most prefer Sentries b/c they point and shoot instead of traveling first.
But it kind of depends on your play style as well.
If you are moving, then you'll eventually have to turn around and come back for the stationary Sentries. In which case, mobile Heavies will be a better choice.
If you just want to get a little transversal going but otherwise remain rooted, then setting orbit on Sentries will work just fine. |
