The contracts system was put in while I was quit for a while.
I can't get a definitive answer to these questions from my mates.
1. Can people scam on contracts the way they used to on escrow by misrepresenting the goods or otherwise lying?
2. If the answer to 1 is yes, how do you avoid being scammed. Under the old system it was necessary to inspect before buying. How does it work now.

1. yes
2. inspection of the goods is a lot more reliable than under the old system. The real scam these days in contracts is WTB contracts, looking for something like a CNR and listing the price they are willing to pay as 1,050,000.00. Instead of 1,050,000,000.00. Since the commas arent in the contract display some people fall for it, and yes its a valid ploy.

Following up on treelox's post, there is also another way that has almost caught me a few times.
A WTB where they request lets say a Caldari Navy Raven, and put the required amount, ie 1,055,000,000 , however this amount is placed under the required items tab, meaning you sell them the caldari navy raven, and pay them the 1.055b as well.

2. Always inspect the goods and the final amounts before committing to a contract
It is however much harder to scam on contracts than it was on the escrow system, so you will see less of it, but it is still there. |

I'd say NEVER use WTB contracts if you aren't very experienced with them.
On a WTB you have to make sure it shows the money in GREEN not in RED. Green means you'll get the money, Red means you will pay them and hand them your item.
Just pay attention and remember to look at the colors and the number of zeros.
Honestly though, if you get scammed now it's because you didn't pay enough attention. There is no scam that is undetectable.
