Is it worth it to rig the salvaging ships? With salvaging rigs at 14M I would like to know whatthe rig actually do. Do they increase the speed of the salvaging or make you salvage more? |

They increase the chance of your salvager to retrieve materials off the wreck.

That's the thing, that "chance"... is not clear on the item description what it actually does. :( |

as the salvageable material is pre-determined upon destruction of the ship, salvage tackles only make u salvage faster in the sense that u have less failed salvage attempts. you wont get any increased salvage gain, however. IMHO its only worth it if u're doing alot of missions with alot of wrecks, or if it is essential that u salvage as fast as possible without sacrificing too many high slots - for example an exequror with 1 salvager and 3 tractors (hypothetical).

First, blow up an npc / player ship to create a wreak. Then, use a ship with a "Salvager I" fitted to a high slot. Fly within 5000 meters of the wreak, target it, and engage the salvager. Or tractor beam it to you. At the end of the salvager cycle, it will say one of three things: 1) This salvaging attempt unsuccessful (so wait for another cycle) 2) This salvaging attempt was successful, but hahaha you wasted your time, it turns out there's nothing to salvage in this wreak. 3) This salvaging attempt was successful, and the salvage gained has been placed in your cargohold.
Paraphrased, of course
Note: you can put more than 1 salvager on a single wreak, as each finishes a cycle you have a chance of salvaging "successfully" (note that doesn't necessarily mean you get anything), so you'll actually have a higher chance of salvaging that particular wreak on the first pass.

I got a couple on my Caty... it makes a noticeable difference in how fast the wrecks salvage. IMO it's worth it.

I use 3 of them on a Sigil with Salvaging V. The ship rarely misses a salvage cycle, moves at about 1km/s, never runs out of cap, and has enough storage space to loot and salvage any level 4 mission in one go.
Put that in your salvage dessy and smoke it!

I personally used an Industrial as well to loot and salvage and it went quite fast.
So slap some rigs on that and it would be quite good in my eyes.

Hurricane BC with 5 tractors 2 salvagers, an armored warfare link for gang boost.
6 T2 expanders gives 2k m3.
3 salvage rigs and the pilot has the PPZ and PPY implants. very fast salvager and gives a nice 22.5% bonus to Armor rep cycle or repper cap use for the mission runner.

Yes, it is worth it. I have three on my salvaging ship. But PLEASE - use a destroyer. Destroyers are the best salvaging ships - they have got 3 upgrade hardpoints, and 8 high-slots, so you can fit four tractor beams and four salvagers. Their advantage over things like battleships and battlecruisers is agility, as well as somehow better speed. And faster you salvage all from the mission, faster you can get another one.

The thing Destroyers have over battlecruisers (I use the Hurricane too, 4/4 setup in the highs) is their speed.
However, my modus operandi is to fly to those wrecks out of range while looting/salvaging the wrecks tractored behind me as I go. If you are going more than 350m/s then it is difficult to empty the cans. This is because the range that the tractor beam holds the wreck at varies by 2-300mtrs or so and drifts out of range while you're trying to empty it - slowing down your efforts. If you already have started a salvager before tractoring and you don't get it emptied in time then they often get a successful cycle and leave the can behind so you have to tractor that in as well - making it a waste of time.
Keeping to ~300m/s means that they get tractored into range and you can empty/salvage them seamlessly whilst flying to the >20km cans.
Of course, if you don't mind slowing your own speed down manually while doing this and then speeding up to get into range to the others; then this is no problem, but just thought I'd raise the issue.
To answer the OP, I have 2 salvage rigs and 1 cargo rig on my hurricane and it works a treat. I occasionally miss a cycle if I only have one salvager on a wreck, (with salvage V) but very rarely miss with 2 or more.
Hurricane Highs - 4 Tractor Beams, 4 Salvagers Mids - 10MN Ab II, Shield extenders Lows - Nanofibres, Cargo expanders. (more CE's if it's a big mission, less if I do want to fly around quickly for the missions with less loot but spaced out.

I recently dropped a salvage rig in favor of a polycarbon rig this gives a nice speed boost under Ab. I now notice that I often need more than 1 cycle of the salvager whereas before with the 3 salvage rigs I rarely if ever saw that 2nd cycle.
I think the cut off point for sucsses is very finely balanced, the 3 rigs plus the Chance for succsess implant coupled with salvage V will ensure 100% 1 cycle efficiency according to my observations. Lose the implant and or a rig or have lvl 4 salvaging and difficult wrecks will pass the threshold and enter the 2nd cycle.
I fit just 2 salvagers and with the 3 rigs that was plenty and in fact they were often waiting for the 5 tractors. now with 2 rigs I find it about right.
