Why are alts allowed to post on the forum?
It has always been an issue, but it has been highlighted today in particular with the latest drama related thread in the EVE information portal. I am not taking anyone's side here, but I have noticed that most of the inflamatory and irrational posts are done by alts.
Why do people post with an alt? Because they wouldn't to be caught dead saying the same stupid things with their main. Eliminate alt posts. Only allow the character with the highest number of SP on an account to post. Delete all 'drama' posts by trial accounts.

It's not always possible to distinguish an alt from a main since some people do use several of their characters "equally".

Basically, OP, there's nothing in the game client nor is there anything server-side that determines whether a character is a 'main' or an 'alt'. The whole main/alt thing is all down to the players.
On top of that, 'alts' are allowed to be used in the roleplaying forums.
(And yes, I find posting with an alt to flame or rant cowardly)

I only post with my alt (Jenny's Boy) when Marq is forumbanned.

One tends to post with an alt because if you say the wrong thing on the forums your game account can (and has in the past) be smacked as a result. As such, it's no surprise that people post with alts. It's annoying, but you really shouldn't expect anything less.

Maybe defining alts is difficult. And I have posted with alts on this account before, but I have made it clear that they were my alts. Perhaps if not posting with the highest SP character on your account (which in the vast majority of cases is the main) then the main is listed under the alts name or something.
So many of the alt posts are rubbish and are totally cowardly. Theres no way these type of people are ever going to grow some balls, so revealing their main on the forum should at least stop much of the garbage posting.

That mere statement can get you some bored tool looking to come ruin your day. This being EVE, there is gonna be a way for him to do it too.
I have heard about n00bs who have come on here and and said things like "we just started a new mining Corp in xxx and need some advice...blah blah." Who are immediately set uopon by jerkoffs can flipping/wardeccing/dec payoff attempts, etc.
Remember everything is intel, your Corp site, your KB, any unguarded comments here, etc.

No reason to harm the many legit alts that form constructive posts and replies. By the way, you aren't the only person ever to suggest this and be shot down. If it were going to be done, it would have been done a long time ago.

I am sure the answer to yours questions are as numerous as the number of alts in EVE.

There are lots more threads about alts this one just popped to the front.
In fact I thought there was one about a week or 2 ago.
And forcing people to post with a main if anybody could actually deside who it was would not really effect anything as people lke drama and of there isn't enough they will create some.
THis is a PvP game which means they want action and drama

2nd, there's no way to know what character is the main.
Also, it doesn't matter if you post with the main or not. Is not like you gonna know who the person actually is you know, where he's from or whats his name etc.
I don't know what's the recent drama on info portal but the drama will always be there. Alt or no alt. It's there because people are passionate about the game and get emotional about it.

First, everyone is allowed to post whatever they want to. There is however 2 limitations to it:
1.) No trial accounts in sales forums
2.) Everyone no matter what is bound by the rules of conduct!
A alt is not just a alt. A alt is a character, on the same line as the "main character". But be it alt or be in main. the rules are the same.

I post with an alt because my real life views of the game on the forum should not have any effect whatsoever on my character in the game.
For example, Dark Shakiri is a "known" guy on the forums, but I'm not aware of him being a big cheese in the game (probably becuase he's always on the forums!). However I bet he gets more attention in game (possibly unwelcome) because he is "known".
It has no bearing on my posting syle, I do not go out of my way to troll or generally be rude to people in a way I would not say to their face in RL.
