Workthrough for single account user
Refer to Dark Shikari's post
This can be done on desktop computers or notebooks, but you should have >1GB RAM.
To speed up eve you have to do in order:
1. download RAMDisk 5.2.6.7 2. install it 3. download Junction v1.04 and extract it into the right folder 4. restart your computer 5. create 2 files with wordpad and put them into the right folders 6. delete manually all folders/files in cache or capture you dont need 7. backup your cache and capture folder 8. test run 9. last changes to the RUN-EVE.bat file to have it shut down after closing eve 10. enjoy

Definitely not. Mine's at 126MB and I still have to purge portraits and stuff every so often. -----

the exclude file allows you to remove filetypes such as portraits and such so a small ramdrive could work for you.
nice to see my batchfile used, looking at the old DS thread/post i thought only 1 dood used it \o/

Edited by: Futuris on 26/05/2007 16:37:04 Can't you just mount the ram volume to c:\program files\ccp\cache using ntfs mount points?
Edit: read the whole thing, thats what you're doing indeed... I would rather just save/restore the RAM drive every time you reboot instead of every time you start EVE.
Is there any measurable performance gain when the cache/capture folders are on a RAM disk? I'd think standard filesystem caching is good enough, you shouldnt have to tell the OS how to cache files...

probably depends on your system as a whole, mines nice and nippy esp after i aquired 4gb of ddr2/6400 800mhz corsair ram, and yer i notice a difference allround.
Some may, some may not, maybe just do a quick test yourself, if its nothing noticable then pass on it, if you notice a difference, then yer its all gravy.

Edited by: Plutoinum on 26/05/2007 16:50:23 Wonder, how much it actually helps.
I have used it myself for a few days, but not long enough to test it in situations, where I really could need an improvement like fleetbattles or to reduce the time it needs to jump into the next system with a fleet. Test version of that ramdrive was a bit small, so I stopped using it again.
Would be nice, if someone with a crappy computer like mine could post his experience with it.

I doubt it helps in any way, especially if you have a lot of RAM. My HDD does not spin at all when I play eve, which means that the OS is already caching all the necessary files and directories.

problem with fleet battles is the chokepoint for upload/download limits, with so many players involved your connections just choke, its not something that you have much control over.
The Ramdrive will help with soem things, but unfortunatly wont magically fix it all, thats up to CCP, they need to sort load balancing spread over more than 1 server.

I find it helps with grid loads, like warping into someones mission deadspace or loading up when you jump into a camp. It's not magically omgwtf uber fast but it's a noticable difference. -----

I have a few questions:
1. Are people still seeing the considerable performance improvements after the trinity patch? I heard a rumor that this patch optimizes the access to the files that are usually ramdisked, and a ramdisk would not make such a difference post-trinity.
2. If the ramdisk is so great, why do the devs not build on into the client for those of us who have lots of RAM?
3. Now that good DDR2 is $10/gig, is there any reason not to load the whole client onto the ramdisk? I already have the superspeed ramdisk with no size limit, and 4 GB of RAM. I only need to run one client, and minimal other programs concurrently. Can anyone tell me what modifications I need to load the whole program and all the associated files into ram? I figure it will take about 25 seconds to load 1.6gb onto the ramdisk before startup, but upon shutdown it will only take a couple seconds to update the cache. I am willing to pay this price for improved game performance!
Thanks!
Im currently working on the basic ramdisk for cache only.

thx for posting here
there are a few problems... with ramdisk and folder locations
this thread isnt working anymore with folders moved from default locations
and so far i know, most disable Premium graphics before going into pvp fleet ops and switch it on later again
that helps :)

4. Finally, with all the changes required to setup the ramdisk, is it possible to still double click the eve icon and run without the ramdisk?
Thanks!

1. don`t know 2. they didn`t do it, because you can play EVE with very low RAM, so CCP would have to make it optional, all threads in that direction haven`t got attention so far, (there were some) 3.is possible and some did it, but you need about 2000+ RAM i think, for my computer with 1000RAM its a no go 4. yes you could create two desctop icons, one with ram-setting (e.g. the EVE-icon for ramdisk refers to the MSDOS file you have created)and one without (e.g. the old desctop EVE icon links to the normal file of your eve installation.
All files are copied on EVE startup into the RAMdrive and later copied back, but you dont have to. (the folder are always copied back after shutting down the game and on system-crash you always have a backup) So all folders always go back where they came from so you can always run eve, the normal way.
