Right as im become more and more ****ed off with Pipex screwing me around, im in the market for a new ISP.
What i want : >8meg speed (but speed is less important than stability)
Decent Latency times (getting over 30ms from pipex servers atm )
NO P2P/Port Blocking ! (This is just annoying me soooo much atm bah)
30-40gb Bandwitch (I dont think any ISPs do unlimited without "fair use policies" anymore :( )
Around ú25 per month cost (what i pay atm)
Right so does anyone have any suggestions (preferably with some experience with the ISP ) ?

I'm with Pipex too. My main issue has been their website services (where you can check your account details, change settings such as credit card for payment and other stand account management features). I've been with Pipex for 14 months now and their web services have been under maintenance the WHOLE time. All of it; not just part. They just never seem to get finished. It was only about 9 months ago that I could change my payment method online (and sometimes this doesn't work).
I'm thinking of changing myself. Before Pipex I was with AOL for just over 2 years and although the connection was stable, the AOL software caused no end of problems. Other than AOL my only real choice is BT.

I had very few stability problems but there customer support was absolutely ****! This was all for about ú30 including a new telephone line.
Currently with Tiscali, they have even worse customer support

Well currently
1. Connection is ridiculusly unstable i.e Sometimes going over 500KPS, while other times dropping to a max of 50-60kps
2. High latency - getting >30ms from several of their servers which serve me .
3. I signed up for a "unlimited" account, but am now being charged extra if i go over around 20gb
4. The whole bull**** with the online control panel
5. The uselessness of the support, they just blame everything on BT, then say they will inform them of the problem. Nothing changes.
6. The fact that they are blocking/throttling Bittorrent most of the time (and i wouldnt really call myself a heavy BT user either)
7.Their whole "fair use policy"- They implemented this after i joined, without consultation or us signing anything. It really is utter bull**** when you sign up for a unlimited service, but they change the contract once youve signed up (pretty sure you could sue them for breach of contract actually)
8. If you go over a certain bandwitch "limit" you get put on a slower server for a Week..... so you pay extra for more bandwitch only to be put on a "bad boy" server.
/rant off

Originally by: Freedom2surf # What traffic management do you employ on your network?
To ensure that all of our customers receive the best performance we employ a traffic management policy which preferences interactive traffic over bandwidth heavy non-interactive applications.
This policy automatically adjusts so that customers who wish to use bandwidth heavy applications such as P2P and binary newsgroup access get the best performance at times (typically off-peak) when other customers are not making use of bandwidth for interactive applications such as web-browsing.
Errm what exactly does this mean ? Speed throttling at peak times?
What kind of bittorrent speeds can you get (off peak and on peak if possible ) ?
Currently during the day i seem to get a max of 100kps, while in the evening this gets slower and slower till it reaches the point where all torrents are a 0kps

sounds like your a victim of the new fair usage policy that most ISP's have brought in, in a nutshell anyone who downloads a lot will have their service restricted between the hours of 4pm and midnight, some half your upload and dload speeds and some vary.

I use Zen, and they've been absolutely excellent. They're not the cheapest around, but they're not THAT expensive either. 100% reliable, from my experience of the last few years.

Your rant explains a lot. I didn't know about this throttling business that Pipex do. My download speeds are ****e most of the time with Pipex. My latency in games is ok though.
I have to say that even though the AOL software was made by Satan, their actual internet service and reliability was much better than Pipex.

i've done some research into this (ie. asked somebody at work) and it looks like Zen are he guys to go with, if you don't mind the 20gig limit on the ú25 service. Their customer service is great, and they win prizes all over the shop from people reviewing them.
They also do a 1 month contract, rather than the hundred years pipex want you to sign up for, so you can give them a go without too much buggering about.
and then there's the hoff...

I dunno, I mean for ú25 you can get a bit more out of your package..
BT, i've personally never had any problems, ú25 a month with them will get you
BT Option 3
My only gripe with them would be their call centres are non UK, but if you go onto BT Business, iirc it costs a lil bit more, but its UK call centres --------------------------------

i had BT as an isp years back, and i wasn't impressed. it was a dialup connection and i was using the 'friends and family' offer where i got free evening and weekend calls to certain local numbers - one of which was my ISP.
they repeatedly billed me for calls that should have been free, and kept sending me bills for months after i'd cancelled the contract.
they must have improved in the meantime, but i'm not overly keen to go back to them.

i'd guess people only bother posting on sites like that if they have an axe to grind - you just never hear from the thousands of perfectly happy customers.
still not convinced BT aren't rubbish though!

NTL have never let me down, been with their broadband service for 8-9 years in Northern Ireland, had probably a max of 1-2days downtime in that entire period, also very few latency probs.

Edited by: Aeon Jonas on 29/05/2007 21:41:57 Well I am with Tiscali. Now yes I know their Customer Support sucks ass! But only to a certain point. The people are EXTREMELY ncie. They are polite and answer any quesitons. Thing is you ask them to do something it don't happen. Took us 3 months to get our address changed. Was painful. Though the price is amazing! I pay ú19.99 for unlimited phone calls 24/7 and 8mb unlimted broadband. Though I pay the line rental to BT as well. The connection is most of the time great. Only problem I had was 2 months ago we had a TERRIBLE problem with connection constantly dropping though I think that was because the exchange in the area where being upgraded. Apart from that they are great. Speed is for me consistent and I am a heavy user.
I would change to someone like Zen but I only pay part of the bill. Parents pay the rest and they have final say. And ym dad thinks its too much hassle to change. Though BT are great customer support and I would go with BT business simply for UK call centre or Zen.
Forgot to add we used to be with Virgin for an ISP about a year ago before it became Virgin media. THey where amazing! Great customer support little pricey but just super. Theres a chance the Virgin ISP may still be around. One in Virgin media and the seperate one. Not sure.

Been on NTL/Virgin for about 6 months now and not had any problems (10meg but soon being upgraded to 20 at no extra cost ).
Can also recommend UK Online, had no problems at all with these in over 2 years. Only changed because they weren't in my area at the time when I moved house.

I've had ntl or virgin media now for 2 years.
Every now and then they seem to upgrade the speed, I started at 750kbps now on 2MB, paying the same price and on unlimited with the fair use policy, although thats just balls.
I have to say that, fibre optics are crappy for upload, however unlike ADSL dont suffer from connection speed ups and down, and I get excellent pings in games.

BT are still bad. Four weeks after having my 2 gig connection set up, I was still getting speeds less than a 14.4K dial-up modem. Several phone calls where I was told I was too far from the exchange and lots of arguments later, I cancelled the contract.
I guess their service is so bad that 700 yards is just too far from the exchange
Now with Pipex and a 8gig connection but I did wonder why I was getting slow connections at times, Now I know, maybe it's time for me to change. I don't like this monthly capped limit thing though, it should be done on an average rather than per month. If you pay ú36 per month for a 50gig limit and only reach the limit once every 6 months, the other five months you've paid for it is wasted money but if you get a lower cap and go over, they hit you big time for it. Heads - they win, tails - you lose. I prefer unlimited or an average limit so you can go over your quota occasionally and not get hammered for it.

Zen are the ISP I use for our offices, and the service and speed is excellent. I can't comment on the home accounts though I'm afraid - but their customer support is second to none.
