It's not like Blizzard (or Sony for that matter, I've still got hotlines to Nodyin and Rashere and I've been literally banned from EverQuest since October 2006) is any better, to quote good ol' GFrazier long long ago:
"Legacy of Steel is a Blizzard guild"
Contact between game devs/GMs and players looks worse in Eve than other games because Eve is unsharded. When something happens, everyone is affected and it shows. It still unfortunately happens sometimes; trying to say that any game doesn't have it is straight-up wrong. It just goes a lot more unnoticed when it only affects the players on Black Dragonflight, Ayonae Ro or whichever server happens to have it.
Eve's not perfect, obviously. If however you're considering leaving Eve to play a Blizzard or Sony, or NCSoft or whoever product, because of the current smear campaign that some people are engaging in, you might as well quit MMOs altogether, because that's the only way you're going to avoid it.

So then why wasn't Simone fired, for doing exactly that, in 2005? Why did he get promoted last year, after the universally reviled AV release? Same with Sony, why did Maddoc get promoted, twice, after his own series of spectacular failures from 2004-2006? Why was Rashere never fired (instead he became lead developer) for giving a select few of his friends from Ayonae a specific advantage that still exists today? Imagine if a few people in this game could fly to any belt in any system they wanted and could kill NPCs without them attacking back, and without other NPCs around them attacking back, so they could gank all the good spawns freely with zero risk. That's what Rashere did, to a fellow officer in the top-end guild that I came from (plus a few others), because they were friends.
If indeed the quoted post was written by a Blizzard employee, then they weren't involved with game design, and they really don't have any concept of how an MMO's high end community works. That's pretty sad, since most developers in the industry know precisely how online communities work even if they don't work in game design, Nino probably being the best example.
CCP has done a lot to try and resolve some of these issues that have come up in the last 6 months. Other companies don't even acknowledge it (ask Sony why a raid end-boss was placed in a single-group zone from a completely previous expansion, and it's bugged so anyone who knows where it is can get free loot), and they lie to their last breath that nothing wrong ever happened. They certainly don't set up Internal Affairs divisions and literally pay people to investigate this kind of stuff. |
