Something like the MILES gear the military uses for training which simulates damage would be a big benefit for corps and alliances to use for PVP training their pilots. Full scale mock battles can be held with no risk to corp/alliance assets. This would also be a big benefit in training up potential field commanders.

I think I understand this - a virtual reality type deal... for a virtual reality? Don't get me wrong, I think that such a thing, even if only in-station(click on button on bottom right, chose/fit ship (need to be able to fly the ship to be able to use it) and then pick a place ( I would imagine such a place would be hosted by the host of the 'event') and then go at each other... I would assume gangs can be formed in such a VR session.
Sounds good. Or, perhaps such a way to spar with a corpmate or two without actually taking damage, while in space. either way. Someone keeps truncating my signature, I swear |

I guess you could call it that...MILES gear used by the military is more like laser tag. A box attached to your weapon emits a laser or directed signal and sensors on the target record the hit. The weapon used is a real weapon but loaded with blank ammunition. The sound of the weapon firing triggers the device.

Maybe a rig that acts as a probe launcher?
You cannot be the target of anything or targeting anything during the 60 second duration of its launch. After 60 seconds have passed it throws up a bubble barrier maybe with a range of 200 km. Initially upon launching theres a 10 second period where you are invulnerable and it acts as a repair drone completely healing the ships within the bubble and preventing any movement or activity. A little timer on top middle of screen to denote? once timer stops ships can begin locking and shooting and knocking each others health down. Once one of the players health reaches zero he becomes like an anchored stationary object instead of blowing up. The bubble stays active until only one ship is remaining then another 10 second period begins where the probe restores the players health back to the same level it was before the duel.

That would work too. I wasn't thinking of something that could make you invulnerable...I think that might lead to possible exploits. I was thinking more like fake ammo and a device that registers and records what strength the hits would have been. Maybe show as damage on your health indicator as a different color. You'd want to deploy scouts in the area while combat training operations were going on so they wouldn't get jumped without time to change to live ammo. I guess another way to think of it other then MILES gear would be Paintball for EVE.

I like the idea of firing blanks, but why not just log onto Singularity and test things there instead? What benefit could be gained from adding dummy charges into the game?

I agree, why waste the Devs time when you got something called a "Test" server. |

There used to be snowballs, which were weapons that did no damage, but they were removed as they were so often used to confuse people about agression rules and cause either CONCORD intervention or other mistakes.

Well first off because a lot of people don't know how to get on the test server. Secondly the test server isn't setup the same as the live server so if they are testing combat upgrades that will change things. Lastly if you are on Tranquility and a hostile group threatens your system you can respond faster to the threat. On the test server you may not even be aware something is happening on the live server.

Quite a few spec-ops forces use airguns to train their troops. (a bit of pain really helps people remembering to keep their a** in cover)
How about some test ammo that only does 1 dmg per shot no matter what and doesnt count as an attack? I dont think anyone would use it for ganks as really everyone could tank even larger gangs quite easily. It would need a popup o/c to tell the ppl that its only training ammo and he shouldnt shoot back with his normal ammo.
