Ok, I've been playing this game for about a year and a half now, and I've tried a good deal of the different things in the game, but by no means all. But of everything I've tried.. mining is far and away the most tedious and boring. Yes I understand that is the point of mining and that it makes some of the best and most consistent money in the game, but these 2 exact points make it the prime market for macro's, which everyone complains about. I have an idea I think would deter the macro's and make the game more fun/involved for those who have chosen this most noble and boring professions.
My idea.. adjustable mining lasers. <Small fanfare music>
Give the different classes of lasers 2 or maybe 3 adjustable parameters such as laser frequency and intensity. Adjusting the frequency would change the "color" of the laser slightly and allow better vaporization of one ore at this frequency over another. The light intensity could also affect output in some similar way. Named/tech II mining lasers would have a slightly larger/more precise range, allowing for even better output. Then mining crystals would give the lasers a high yield starting point but with minor adjustments within the crystals range, slightly better output would be possible. This would make mining not only more fun and interactive, but less attractive for macro-miners as it would require more pilot attention for maximum output.. more attentive pilots would then get a significant portion more ore and minerals for the same time.
Please give me all input, both bad and good; but if you don't like the idea, please try and give me a reason, rather than something vague like "that idea sucks, and you suck for having it"

very
unique
thats for sure ! ____ __ ________ _sig below_ the jet cans are made so that people that dont mine can get free ore
miners ritually donate the ore to anyone wishing to take some |

I don't see the point.

Are you saying mining should be turned into a color-based mini-game?
As a partially colorblind miner, I don't see the point.

Don't we have a similar thing coming into EVE with Rev 2 called Heat?

Yeah you can overheat your offensive and defensive modules in rev 2, but I'm not actually too sure about mining lasers, not tried it on the test server.
If you could it would probably be bad as modulated strip miner ii's already cost enough as it is!

Color was just an example of how a mining lasers could be affected by the adjustable parameters, and the color itself really doesn't matter. The idea was to make mining more fun/interesting for the average pilot instead of having most of the pod pilot community bored to death by mining and leaving most of the mining to be done by macro-miners.

Macros would be even more effective than human players as they could easily determine the exact pixel color for optimum mining and adjust accordingly.

The settings for optimal output on a mining laser would change from 'roid to 'roid, so that there are no perfect settings for every asteroid and more pilot attention will be required to get the optimum amount of ore.
