I've read the original Zhan trilogy, which was brilliant. And some of the other early novels, c. 1994.
But in the intervening 13-odd years, what do people consider the novels that are actually worth reading? There have been dozens upon dozens, and I know that several, at least, from personal experience, are crap. So what's actually worth purchasing and reading?
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

In all honesty, the next two star wars books worth reading are by... Timothy Zahn.
Purists will have you hung drawn and quartered for skipping so much of the storyline, but from what I've read in between it may as well all be filler. Actually, I tell a lie - some of the comic books were ok.

Yeah Michael A. Stackpole has written a few decent stories too, I do like Corran Horn, but he always tends to take the limelight in everybook Stackpole writes

Read the New Jedi Order series. All of it. It's long but a really good and exciting chapter in Star Wars history.

The Han Solo trilogy, the story from when he was a child to when he meets Ben. Any of the books with Grand Admiral Thrawn are generally good to read (he also has his own trilogy - Heir to The Empire, Dark Force Rising and the last command).
Also the one where the Hutts make their own Death Star laser, that is a funny book.

Edited by: Niton Stormrider on 31/05/2007 15:49:21 I second the X-wing novels and the second Han Solo Trilogy (there was a first, written in the seventies, that covers three of Han's adventures in the Corporate Sector; fits into the interlude in the third novel of the second Han trilogy, and was really quite good). Also, the Truce at Bakura was pretty good. It's the first one chronologically after the original movies, beginning right at the end of the Battle of Endor. Also, the Corellian Triology was awesome. Courtship of Princess Leia is good and pretty critical to the overall story arc. And the Jedi Academy Trilogy if you like Kevin J Anderson's writing (the man's like bagpipes, you love him or you hate him.).
Wow, I'm just a big ***** for Han Solo, ain't I? Stop looking at me like that, I'm not a StarWars fanboi! don'tlookatthesigdon'tlookatthesigdon'tlookatthesig....

I agree. I loved these books because they filled in a lot of backstory on the characters. I have always been a Han Solo fan so those were a treat. And the bounty hunter series was fun to read as well. I liked IG-88. And the Timothy Zahn novels are a must read.

The Zahn books are the best of the novels. However, find the Dark Empire (i think that was the name, I have them at home) comics.
Luke going to the Dark side and back again....frikken awesome.
I stopped reading the Star Wars books around the time that Crystal Star by Vonda whatever came out. They just were sucking big time by then.
The Stackpole stuff is OK, I enjoyed some of his Battletech work as well.
There were some more comics by Dark Horse with good storylines too. I didn't like the X-Wing series, but the older Jedi comics were pretty damn nifty.
Of course, Fat Man Lucas had to do his own thing and ignore the SWEET backstory created in the comics and novels.

The Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy was good. It tells you how Boba Fett survived falling into the Sarlaac's mouth. Its three books; The Mandalorian Armor, Slave Ship, and Hard Merchandise. Its all about Boba Fett, Dengar, Bossk, and a few other bounty hunters.
Shadows of the Empire was the first Star Wars book I read, and a pretty good one. The Thrawn books are easily the best though. The X-Wing series, especially those written by Michael A. Stackpole, are really good. Its great if you're into the Star Wars universe, but not so much into Jedi. The fall of Coruscant happens in the X-Wing books.
The New Jedi Order series is also really good. Something big happens in the first book. I never actually finished it though. The authors in that series were not afraid to kill off major characters.
The Courtship of Princess Leia is the worst Star Wars book I read. The Truce at Bakura wasn't great either.

I put in a big "me too" for Zhan and Stackpole. Zhan's non-Star Wars books are equally brilliant (Cobra, Conquerers trilogy, and Icarus Hunt are among my favorites).
Nearly every Kevin J. Anderson book in the Star Wars series has this quote on it:
"Anderson has all but assumed the title of chancellor of Star Wars University." --Starlog
This should be taken as a warning, not an endorsement. Also, he does obscene things to the corpse of Frank Herbert.

Like I said. Bagpipes. Personally I like the Dune prequels. Sure, the style is different than Frank Herbert, but that's to be expected. Frank's dead, after all, and couldn't consult.

Kevin Anderson has a bigger hardon for stupid superweapons than CCP does, and that's saying a lot.
After Zahn, Stackpole is probably the best consistent writer
