Hello everyone! I'm gradually getting better at the game, and I still absolutely love it! I have a slight question though.
My main weakness at the moment is outfitting ships. I'm struggling to understand what tanking is, i.e. even though I buy a Shield Booster, I always get the feeling that I'm not "making the most" of the spare mount points that my ship has to offer, y'know? The main reason I ask this is because I simply just don't last past the first gate in the Worlds Collide mission, in a Kestrel...I must be doing something wrong!
Secondly, I'm not quite sure which weapons I should be using to get the best effect. At the moment, I tend to just put Standard Missile Launcher I's on the ship and arm them with both the Piranha and the other missile beginning with S...I can't remember what it is... Shadowclaw or something? Perhaps I should be using turrets, or heavy missiles?
Can anyone give me some tips at all? I would be greatly appreciative.

there are basicaly 3 options to handle the npcs damage-output:
1) increase your ships resistance
2) increase your ships hp
3) increase your ships (transversal) speed

Regarding tanking, I would start by reading this guide. After you have given this a read, feel free to ask more specific questions. By reading that guide you should have a basic understanding so that you no how to explain your questions and understand our answers.
As for what weapons to fit. Standard launchers which load with light missiles will probably be the best bet on a Kestral. You will need to have some pretty good skills to get a full set of 4 launchers on there so you might need to make some comprimises. The other option would be rockets, which have a much shorter range. The fitting requirements of rockets would let you fit better tanking modules. Larger missiles are for use on Cruisers/Battleships.
Choose the type of missile/rocket based on the targets you are shooting at. You can use this site to look up the resistances of NPC's. For example Guristas typically have Kinetic as their lowest resist so you would want to use Bloodclaw Light Missiles/Thorn Rockets on them, while Blood Raiders are weakest against EM so use Sabretooth Light Missiles/Gremlin Rockets. One further complication to this is that your ship gets a bonuse when using Bloodclaw Light Missiles/Thorn Rockets so they might be a better choice if the targets Kinetic resistance is close to the lowest resistance.

Always use your ships special abilities to their full advantage. The kestrel is an excellent little ship, especially for sleepy time mission running. It gains a 10% damage bonus per level to kinetic damage, and only 5% with other missiles. Moral of the story, keep a few hundred of various missiles in your cargo bay ready to refit, but use bloodclaws as standard.
As for worlds collide, check around the missions segment of these forums, that has it's own thread.

Thank you to all the people who replied. I will be bearing all that in my mind.
However, I read somewhere that a Destroyer can lighten the load with Worlds Collide? I've just bought one, and I'll be having a go with it as soon as the next World's Collide shows up.
How do you guys fit up your Cormorants? Just so I can get an idea?

use long range ammo like antimatter charge s and your range should be about 25 optimal with no skills with skills look for optimal at around... 27 km
you won't need a tank with this set up well it is a "tank it's a speed tank
There's not much that's more pathetic that trolling the new players forums, seriously. My advice to any new players would be not to listen to anything this person says.
Long range ammo antimatter S?
Fit MWD's that won't work in deadspace?
Target Painters when you're using frigate sized weapons?
If you're not trolling you're too stupid to be giving new players advice, but I'm very confident you are.

ok so -80 % range mean it increases your range by 80% and 50 means it lowers your range by 50%...
argh
and I know it's not my post post but.. what's wrong with a target painter?? http://www.eve-online.com/itemdatabase/shipequipment/electronicwarfare/targetpainters/12709.asp

It's a waste of a midslot if you're fighting frigate sized ships with frigate sized weapons; however this isn't the only thread you'd posted incorret advice in, which is why I suspected you were trolling.
