Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis. Similar themes to Blade Runner, I think.

Solaris (Russian, not G. Clooney) The Boys (Australian film) Ghosts of the Civil Dead (Nick Cave as a psycho prisoner Probably best film made about the prison system) Withnail and I (BClassic movie that made Richard E Grant's name) Dr Strangelove (If you haven't seen it, you must) The Party (Peter Sellers at his best, see Dr Strangelove for equal best) Stalker (if you like left of field, and I mean left of field see it. You either love or h8 Tarkovsky) Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (Tom Stoppard screws with Hamlet) Brother, and the other films starring/directed by Takeshi Kitano The Professional

<_< I gave up on that crap after I found out that 4Kids chopped it all to hell and re-wrote the script for American kids.

Try Internal Affairs. It's the original that was copied by The Departed (directed by Martin Scorsese). It's a Japanese film I think(I can't honest remember if it's Japanese or Chinese) so it's all in subtitles. Excellent film though. One of my favourites.

Correcto, it was natively filmed in Cantonese, one of the best asian languages for gangster movies, arguably the best.
On the subject of slow suspense, I suggest Oldboy, a korean movie. There's a HD version :)

Try Legend for some more Ridley Scott stuff - apparently the unicorn dream from Bladerunner was shot while he was making Legend.
Also maybe:
Pan's Labyrinth Dark Water and is 2001: A Space Odyssey just too obvious to mention?

Pan's Labyrinth is awesome, everyone should watch it. One of the few movies I didn't feel like doing anything afterwards so I could mull over it. I wouldn't have said it was slow though. Edited by: Kazuo Ishiguro on 04/06/2007 14:53:31 The Talented Mr. Ripley seems to be a perfect match with most of the titles the OP mentioned; I'm surprised no-one else mentioned it. Empire of the Sun might also be of interest (plug: I went to the same school as the lead actor). ------ Spreadsheets: Top speed calculation - Halo Implant tanking |

Yes, definitely a weird movie. Very funny in places though. Especially when John Malkovich gets into a taxi and the driver tries to convince him he starred in a movie that John didn't do. The people who made Being John Malkovich also made Adaptation; also a weird story, about a guy writing a film about a book about Orchids.

I think just about all HK flicks nowadays are filmed in the Cantonese dialect... or atleast 99% of em. One of the characteristics of a HK film. Couple friends in Shanghai tell me its a pain in the ass at times having to read Mandarin subtitles. =/
