I have just started killing pirates. How do I collect the bonus?

The bounty automatically goes to your wallet when you podkill a player with a bounty; you also get an evemail confirming it.

If you're talking about NPC Pirates, you won't get a Evemail, just cash in your account. Go to your wallet and choose (I hate it when I can't remember the titles) the third tab from the right (the one with the "load" button at the top). You'll see all the pirate NPC bonuses coming in. I'm at work, so I can't login and check, so I'm sorry if the above is a bit vague.
For player pirates, you get an Evemail and the cash is in your account.

FYI: Playing as a bounty hunter is a dead profession in EVE. It is something the community has been asking for improvements to for...well...since forever but so far no go from CCP. If you kill a player pirate and get a bounty great but by and large as things stand today it is not a viable profession (sadly).

Do I have to completely destroy the ship? When I raid the cagohold, there is usually one 'red bar line' left on the target.

Edited by: Kaid Tallinu on 04/06/2007 08:36:27 It appears you're talking about NPC pirates.
Step 1: shoot until ship explodes. At this point you get the bounty. If you open your wallet, and click on the Journal tab, and then the Load button, you'll see the cash going into your account.
Step 2: loot and salvage. Get within 1500m of the wreck, open the cargo and you'll see what the rat dropped for you. Drag to your own cargo hold. If you have the skills to use Salvager I, lock onto the wreck, and activate. After a little while you'll either get or not get salvage materials (it's chance based). At this point the wreck disappears.
If you salvage before looting, the wreck disappears and if it contained loot, leaves behind a jetison can with the loot in it.
Either way, you don't need to shoot the wreck or can; you've already got your bounty payment. Yes, a damage bar does appear, because both wreck and can are destructable; there's generally just no point in destroying them.
As a sidenote... when you destroy a rat, the loot it drops belongs to you. Anyone who steals the loot will be flagged to you, and you have 15 minutes to find them and kill them (if you wish). This only applies to the loot: anyone can salvage the wreck.

Quick note on NPC wreckage. The symbol of the wreckage looks like a triangle with a line under it. If the triangle is solid, there is loot in the wreckage. You can salvage from 5000 meters, so if the triangle is empty you don't have to get as close. If you are using a dedicated salvage ship with multiple tractor beams, this can save you some time. After you have opened wreckage, the icon changes from white to gray so you know which ones you have visited.
If you salvage a ship with loot, the wreckage disappears and a normal jetcan appears in its place. <----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> "Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by incompetence." - Anoymous |

Is one scan of a wreck sufficient, or do I need to scan a couple of times? I am trained to level 3 on salvaging.

It will let you know when you are successful. Even with 4-6 salvagers on one target, it occasionally takes more than one cycle. Just turn your salvager on and wait for it to tell you it's done.
It will tell you one of three things:
1. Salvaging failed this time. The salvager will continue to run. 2. You salvaged successfully, but there was nothing to salvage; or 3. You salvaged successfully from the wreck. The items will be moved to your cargo automatically. <----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> "Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by incompetence." - Anoymous |

Salvaging may be more fun, but mining Scordite in my Imicus fitted cargohold expansions and two miner II lasers is quicker, safer and a lot more profitable.

Are you a troll or just incredibly new?
1. No. It isn't. You might make a steadier income, but salvaging will bring in alot more than 2 Miner II's will.
2. You should be mining in a Navitas, not an Imicus.

What does "troll" mean? May I assume it is not a compliment.

He's accusing you of posting something ridiculous just to generate replies.
Lots of people talk big on the forums to compensate for whatever they personally lack. Just ignore him.

I took your kind advice, but I have to assume that I am going wrong somewhere, perhaps you can advise me.
Imicus
2x miner II 2x expanded cargohold I Gives a ship hold capacity of: 441.8, which, full of scordite sold in my station market for 41.604
Navitas
2x miner II 2x expanded cargohold I Gives a ship hold capacity of: 341.4, which, full of scordite sold in my station market for 32.139
I would be most grateful for any advice you could offer me, as, as a newcomer, mining is how I make my living, so to speak.
Thank you.

Edited by: Stefx on 05/06/2007 18:47:40 Why the navitas can mine more than the Imicus The navitas gets a big bonus (20% IIRC) for each level of frigate skill you have. In other words, with frigate 4, the navitas gets a 80% bonus. This alone makes it a better miner than the imicus.
Why salvaging brings good income Salvaging and looting brings very good income. Once you reach L3 missions, the value of the salvage + loot + bounties + mission reward is comparable or higher than mining in a retriever.
It is true that mining can be more steady and risk-free, but you've just begun playing (I assume, considering you're playing a frigate). In a few days/weeks/months, you'll grow tired of mining and want to do something else.
Another benefit of missions is that you gain standing, which give you eventually tax-free refining and access to jump clones. Missions also give you salvage which can be used to build rigs, which can bring in a very nice profit margin when sold on the market, or reduce your procurement cost by making the ones you need yourself.

Thanks for providing a really helpful answer. Mind you, three days to train to level four for frigate! Better get started I suppose.

I also stuck to mining for the first few months while I built up my skills. Now I do a mix of missions and mining.

What are you talking about? You said all of that and didn't give a single reason why you think that's the case. Care to elaborate? Honesly, it sounds like you're frustrated... And maybe you're frustrated with just not being a very good bounty hunter?
