I fell for a marketscam this morning and only because I didnt have enough money to complete the transaction I didnt lose a substantional sum of isk.
This is how it worked.
I wanted to buy a skill, checked the prices at Jita and saw the following prices
4,600,000.00 isk 4,700,000.00 isk 4,500,000,00.01
(but then ofcourse in the market layout and small font, aligned to the right)
Not quite awake yey, I didnt notice that the last price didnt has isk behind it, so I thought it was the lowest price, clicked on buy and got the message "you are in debt, etc....".
I was surprised and checked the price again, seeing the skill being offered for 4,500,000,00.00. Luckily I didnt have that 4 bill isk, so the order was cancelled, but it made a bit angry.
Appearantly, the "isk" is not put behind prices that large, so, with the alignment, it just seemed the price was just 4,500,000 isk.
I know, I just needed to be more careful, but nevertheless i regard it as an exploit. Anybody with the same experiences ?

I reckon it's known and commonly tried legal abuse of mechanism. CCP now and then tries to make it harder, like switching to fixed length of font (which made those 1,111,111 prices disappear).
Simple workaround: When buying, always sort columns by price, and pick the first tha t says 'station'.
Also reading the screens given to you helps too. Especially if it has red warnings about overprice you're about to pay.

Of course I needed to be more careful and I will the next time, but the "scam" was well hidden.....

I just tested this and it's not showing like that.
....4.600.000.00 isk ....4.700.000.00 isk 4.500.000.00.01 isk
(it won't show space in front of the price)
This is how i see it. I do see the isk at the end of the last price I must be really sleeping before i fall for something like that
And a few million isk went down the drain with this test

I'm at the office now, so I can't check it, but I was convinced the "isk" wasnt stated behind the amount.
It's the "Eiditic memory" skill.
Well, if it was my own fault, then I'm really lucky I'm not a very rich Ever :)

If you make mistakes like that frequently, you'll never become rich
Its amazing people keep falling for this. I still see frigates being sold for 200 mill Isk and freighters being bought for 1 mill Isk.

I usually dont fall for this, and it's not that I'm not richt, but I just dont have 4,5 bill isk floating around in my swimmingpool doing nothing.....that's rather useless

If 4.5 billion is a lot of money to have laying around then no, you're not rich

Richness is subjective. A newbie could feel rich when he sells looted goods for 100k isk. For a trader it could be 5-100bil. For a pvp guy it can be 2-4 BS he has in his hangar.

I kind of miss the days when 100mil was a lot to have. Now it seems like no matter how many billions you make, its not really that much.

Just wanted to point out that solutions to these scams and issues are discussed in a thread I made recently.
Its exactly these abuses of gamemechanics that is so frustrating and tiresom to "fair" players.

I kind of wonder who this scam is aimed at. What character training Eidetic Memory is going to have 4.5B ISK laying around? That's a newbie area skill.
Maybe people who buy their ISK from farmers? If so, they deserve to be scammed.
