I'm pretty new to this and at the minute i have a moa(i thought it was the best ship to get) and i'm not sure what to do next. should i change to a caracal which some of my friends have and says its a good ship or, if not what would be a good outfit for the moa?

Caracal is a great anti-frig ship with some assault launchers going. But in general any cruiser will kill it because its made out paper and has crap damage output. The moa is a good sniper, has a good tank, but again, damage output is makes baby jesus cry. Either one will suffice for pve, but probaly the caracal for ratting is better.

Do you have better missile skills or gun skills? Caldari generally have better missile skills...in which case a caracal works better.

Caracal is an awesome cruiser for a caldari player with at least basic missile skills... 5 medslots with moa only having 4 is a major advantage like missiles always hitting.
Moa is a solid cruiser, but those medium railguns have trouble hitting all the npc frigates and 4 medslots doesn't tank too well, especially considering pvp. Its just hard for the Moa to find a niche that other ships don't do better with ease... - I'm a nice guy!! and OMG I love Team Tuxford for the speedbalancing... |

The moa is not really a good cruiser. It has a good concept but there are many problems with it, so you probably are better of in a caracal. A good set up for a caracal for pveing is: Highs: 5 heavy launchers
Mids: 3 rat specific hardeners, 1 shield booster, 1 shield boost amp
Lows: 1 power diagnostic, and 1 balistic control unit.
After you get into a caracal, from there alot people go into battlecruisers.
There are two caldari battlecruisers, the ferox and the drake. The ferox is alot like the moa, good concept, but several problems. The drake however can be a fairly decent battlecruiser, you can set it up to either passive tank (relying on shild recharge, ie: shield power relays, shield extenders, and shield rechargers) like a beast (next patch is going to lower it's tanking ability) or you can set it up to have a decent damage per second.
From here you have battleships, tech II ships, and capital ships to fly.
If you do still want to fly the moa you can try setting it up with:
Highs: 2 assualt launchers, 4 250 mm rail guns
Mids: 2 rat specific hardeners, 1 shield booster, and a cap booster (the cap is absolutely horrid on this ship)
Lows: damage control, magnetic field stab, and 2 power diagnostic systems
Kind of like the Triforce in Zelda, only not quite as potent.

caracal is better for pve(missiles) moa is good but her slot layout isnt, and fitting is ofc depends for what you want to do, try the sticky at the top.

You didn't say whther you were doing missions or pvp.
For missions you need to choose what you are specialising in, railsguns or missiles. (Hint missiles are better) The ship progressions are
Railguns Merlin (lvl 1) Cormorant (lvl 1) Moa (lvl 2) Freox (lvl 3) Rokh (lvl 4)
Misslies Kestrel (lvl 1) Caracal (lvl 2) Drake (lvl 3) (ferox also works as a cheaper substitute) Raven (lvl 4)
Importantly check out the relevant ship setup threads. They have lots of good setups to get you started.
As far as pvp goes, the caracal can be good for anti frig support, no one seems to use moas.

Moa is a great ship, the problem that makes it unpopular is that it's style is againts modern small gang PVP style.
The ship is best for longer engagements just as the desccription mentions.
Anouther problem is that it goes against it's own race. Hybrid turrets are not something caldari tend to go for in the early stages of training.
The moa's best attribute is the tank. Although a good ship, it really doesn't fit with other PVP worthy ships. It could be given blasters but it's slow speed means those blasters wont get used. Adding MWD or AB to the ship means it's gonna have less tank, while still being slower to other ships of it's class that have MWD. -------------------------------------- ---"What's in your wallet?"--- "There are two kinds of respect, fear and admiration....
