One thing that I was wondering. What kind of influence does it have on the economy when a miner gets blown up. How often do miners get blown up? People that do combat pvp usually say they are poor. If things where cheaper you might not be so poor? Don't you think things would be cheaper if miners could supply more minerals/ore to the market? You are actually not only causing damage to the miners, but to the whole economy. Biting the hand that feeds you really.
If you want my respect, probe me out when I am doing a mission and ransom me. Now that is combat pvp. You had to actually work to find me. Not gate camping, not stealing from unarmed people
First, 2 hours in space, I suggest hauling more often. Or not jetcan mining. You could hire someone to protect you. Not many people are too happy to switch cans when they know someone is there ready to pop em. Cept me, thats where it gets fun.
I think there are enough miners out there, that popping a few miners, isnt going to hurt the economy. Like I said or theivery isnt my primary source if income, it's what I do when I am bored. And no, I don't have enough isk that I am willing to risk at least 1/10th to fight in your bs fights.
And I do probe, so finding a mission runner is annoying, but possible.

WOW... judging by the responses I am astonished by peoples' ability to judge ones character in real life based on the actions in a game. I suppose MMO Psychology was an elective I missed in college. It looks as if stealing ore from a can is a more dire offense than murder (or at least EVE's version of murder). I have not, nor will I ever, make an assumption obout a real person based on what I read here or see in-game. If people really are bad because of how they play a game, the solution should be to remove all violence and other nefarious actions from all games, then everyone can go about their merry way in their little safe box of isolation.

To those being defensive about being referred to in deragotory terms- you kind of made your choices. As several people have pointed out, the only real actions people have to judge you by are those in-game and to a lesser extent here on the forums.
You can be a gentleman thief, or an honorable pirate. But you're still a thief and/or pirate. By your actions you are known, and reputation in this game is pretty much life. So, there's your bed. You made it, now you'll have to lie in it.
Does that mean you're a colossal jackass in real life? Maybe. Probably not, but I tend to think that the thieves, pirates, suicide gankers and so forth are more likely to be jerks in RL, but "more likely" != "are".
Anecdote break: Some guy nearly ran my motorcycle off the road a couple of weeks ago, no signal, no head check, driving like a lunatic, coming out of my blindspot at twice the speed of the rest of the traffic. That guy is more likely to be a complete mouthbreather with no regard for his fellow humans, but maybe he was just late for an appointment or his wife was in the hospital or something. Point being, out of context, it's not logical or really supportable to make sweeping judgements about someone's personality, and it's even less logical to do so when they're playing an MMO, which explicitly encourages people to take on a "role".
Maybe it's a bad analogy, but I think it's just as bad to start calling people who play "bad guys" in EVE scum/bullies/thugs/criminals/whatever in real life based solely on their in-game actions. You can probably assume they're more likely to be that, but look at it the other way- does being a miner or PVE player mean you're a good guy in real life? Of course not. It may mean you're more likely to be a pacifist, but it doesn't mean you are one. My character is pretty much a carebear explorer, but in real life I'm a combat veteran and have done things "in real life" that I promise would give most people nightmares. Seems silly to point that out, but it's just as silly to assume that someone's a horrible person because they do something in a game.
It is a "role" playing game. It's not always fun to play the role of the good guy.

Once you do things in order to irritate another player, you're no longer a fantasy a-hole, you become a living breathing a-hole sitting at the keyboard.
You don't know who's sitting there mining, it could be a little kid or someone's grandmother.
I might have a different perspective on this because I'm an older gamer, alot of things most people do as "part of the game" I just won't do. To me a 17 year old is just as much a kid as a 13 year old, if I rob them it's like robbing a child.

I'm a jerk in the Eve world and I'm a jerk in the "real" world. Just ask my wife. So I'll come steal your ore if you've been playing for 3 years or 3 days. Do I want to teach you a lesson, well personally I couldn't give a hoot. I just want to blow you up and take your strip miners to sell. So what. Go cry about it and put a big bounty on my head. Send me some hate mail, I'll love you even more.

@Cipher7
You know, that 13 year old your talking about should be parentally supervised like the EULA states. If he/she isn't being supervised, then stealing ore in a make believe world is the least of that kid's problems.
You have your "values". You equate this game to real life. Good for you. I don't. I can tell the difference between fantasy and reality. Some people can't and they are the whiners in this thread. If it's too much for you to handle then goodbye.

I dont know about you, but I do have a corp. If I am online and someone from my corp is stolen from I usually go in and help stopping them. What I think is fun is when people steal back well knowing they will loose their ship. Also when they bring in corp m8s, which some do, it will be a nice fight. I have had good and long battles, both defending ore and stealing it. Miners are usually not alone, unless you go into starter systems.

You guys aren't doing anything different than miners.
Miner uses lasers on an asteroid that can't shoot back.
Ore thief uses weapons on a mining barge that can't shoot back.
Just be honest. You guys feel bad that you didn't focus your skills on mining and really want to mine rather than PVP you are just too ashamed to admit it :)
If you really wanted PVP you would go find people in low sec or 0.0
At least I don't hide what I am, I am a miner. Come out of the closet and I will teach you how to kill an asteroid

LOL ;) Problem is, asteroids don't give killmails, meh!
Anyway, I don't really understand people who judge someone's character based on them stealing what the miners *throw away*. And, yes, putting stuff in a Jetcan is throwing stuff away. Read the player guide ;)
If you use a near-exploit to be able to mine more, then I don't see how you got the moral high-ground (in a game, ffs!) to complain about people who use legitimate mechanics to steal you r ore.
The solution, anyway, is simple. (a) You can just not jetcan mine, and you're safe. Lowers the profits, I know, but eh. (b) You can get a mate in a combat ship to drop the can for you and sit nearby, cloaked. Since he'll have aggroed him instead of you, heh.
Ore thievery is just a by-product of jetcan mining - if you want to remove one, then remove the other, since jetcan mining is not an intended mechanic, and all players who read the new player guide or finished the tutorial damn well know once they throw something away, it's up for grabs.

Well see here's the thing.
Crime is and should be a valid profession in Eve.
But there's smart crooks and dumb crooks.
Smart crooks operate shady businesses and make targeted killings. You don't see the Mafia killing women and children, so there's no public outcry. Nobody cares if Vinnie the Gooch offs Tony the Chin, so these people can continue operating their illegal businesses.
Dumb crooks rip off stereos and steal purses. They sell drugs right in their own neighborhood. As the result the community outcry more police protection and these guys get sent to jail by the sixpack.
It's the same with Eve except the mayor is CCP.
What happens in highsec has a direct effect on CCP's bottom line, and if they determine that its more profitable to remove ore theft as a profession then you can bet your arse they will remove it.
Smart crooks in Eve target macrominers and 0.0 corps hauling t2 stuff back to empire.
Even smarter crooks take over portions of 0.0 and make money renting out space to miners. These are like the "politicians" of Eve. The smartest crooks are the ones in public office that make policy, or do you really think people spend 60 million dollars compaigning for a job that pays $200,000 a year?
Dumb crooks in Eve target n00bs mining in their little Osprey. These are the Eve equivalent of stero thieves, the type that snatch purses and sell drugs right outside their own apartment.
The moral : Be a smart crook, or you're gonna be back in world of warcraft playing your undead rogue when they decide to nerf crime to boost subcriptions.

Let's see...
Run 2 - 3 missions in the same system you're mining in. Keep the book marks.
Or thief steals can. Pop him if you can. blow both his can and yours while he is headed back to station to switch ships.
Warp back and forth between your book marks till the agression timer elapses while said thief is ranting how you are a coward.
Hold your composure as you type in local.... :)
Ore thieves are like the bullies of the school yard. They like to pick on those that don't really want to fight back .
They can't cut in out in 0.0 so they stay in empire and claim how much of a badass they are .
Have you pwnd a today ?? Let's hear your story.

I spent a LONG time in 0.0. I was a proud member of ASCN. Then BoB came. I fought em, and when on the CLS kb, it said I was one of the TOP TEN KILLERS, I left. I moved to stain. I got tired of the ganks. Either you win, easily. Or you lose. Solo pvp is all but dead in 0.0. There are too many ganks and bubble camps.
I moved to empire to have fun. Now I steal ore and declare war on corps. Some are fun, many I talked to throughout the war, and where cool.
So PLEASE. dont say pirates cant hack it in 0.0. Why arent you mining in 0.0? It's the same thing. For some reason carebears feel that pirates NEED to be in 0.0 to be big, but they can mine veldspar all day and they can be HUGE.

Why aren't I out in 0.0 mining?
Let's see.. I've played this game since it's launch. I was part of Curse Alliance when it first formed and at the time I was under the Corp named Dream Smiths. I am a pure miner no combat.
After my corp mates stop logging in I took a leave from the game for about 2yrs + and came back to find myself the only one in 0.0.
Needless to say got my Ass handed to me. So in essence (like I said about empire pirates) I couldn't cut out in 0.0 and I joined a small corp with a friend who asked me to come back to the game.
At present they are we are not ready to jump to 0.0 but when we, are my pure mining ass will be right there with em .
And trust me.. I won't be crying about gate camps, bubbles and the need to come back to empire to take advantage of people who don't wish to pvp in order have fun.

now i m not saying that being a criminal in eve reflects your real life persona but coming here bragging about petty theft yet at the same time having a jolly ole cry about how one is oh so misunderstood and hated does.
go play the game which ever way you like but dont claim that stealing ore or popping barges is the pvp life style. calling yourself a pirate is an insult to all pirates in eve.

Why do people always insist on comparing actions in EVE to real life? It's a shame people take this game so seriously that they judge people by their actions in a game.
It might be a game, but mostly ppl used to play with the real personality, not the fake one. If the player is jerkoff in real life, then is jerkoff in game too.

It takes long time to build something, however it takes short time to destroy it ...
Why does EVE hate you? See the line above. Basicaly you are ruining their hard achievment. Mining is boring. It is ineffective when using secure cans. CCP does not care about miners. So we do the best we can. And then comes an ore thief and steals what we worked for.
But you know all this. Yet you think it will somehow entertain people that do NOT care for PvP. If you want PvP, go to 0.0. Wardec somebody. Camp a gate. Ask for a duel. Whatever. Get yourself hired as ore guard for example.
Don't abuse the can flag system.

It's good to see the same old arguements about ore theft, pro and con.
The simple fact is it can and WILL happen, being snippy and casting aspersions about peoples RL character is just plain stupid. As with many generalisations there's a good chance it's taking a common case and making it the only case.
There is are stick threads on ore theft, protection and execution in this very forum. Read them and LEARN how to avoid it. It's no one's responsibility but your own.
I steal ore in the hope that someone will attack me so I can pop their ship (or ransom) for the chance of decent profit. The fun is in the risk of it really. Who's to say they don't have 5 corp mates in the next system over, or instead of coming back in a hauler will come back with a T2 ship and fitting?
I'll steal from covetors in an itty V with a neutron blaster and nos, depending on the drone skills of my opponent it could all go wrong.
To all those people that get all angry about ore theives, learn to protect your operation one way or another. If you can't do that then get over it, it's your fault you're losing ore. Eve is a multiplayer game, join a corp that can protect you or haul for you. It's really not that hard, I know I used to mine, and I never had more than a cycle of ore stole at any one time.
Oh, and the correct saying is "i before e, except after c, where the sound is e". -- Achura, the best stats. Pity it had to be caldari.

Eve was never meant to be a solo game. if you mine in groups, 3 miners and one hauler, you can keep 1 veld in the can for a couple hours. Not only that, but solo mining will put you to sleep after about 25 minutes. Mining while chatting on vent makes the time slide by easily. There's even skills to promote mining in groups (mining foreman, mining director, etc.)
The problem isn't ore thieves at all. It's people just leaving their ore in floating containers waiting to be picked up by whomever walks by.
