What you think?
A system that will be used for normal internet/irc/msn usage. And the only games to be played are BF2 and EVE.
so what would it be?
XP? Vista?
also overall what would you rate.

XP, because Vista just isn't ready yet. I know Microsoft wants us to think it is, but it isn't.
The gui candy is too resource-intensive and adds nothing to the user experience. It is not as reliable as XP, nor really more secure. It's built-in DRM gives thinking people the heeby-jeeby's. There are several elements of the interface that are just stupid (for instance, the "Power Off" button in the start menu does not, in fact, turn the computer off). And it is still buggy and largely incompatable with several graphics cards from major manufacturers.
I've used both plenty, and though no flavour of Windows is my OS of choice, I'd much rather be stuck with XP than Vista right now. On my Imaginary Scale Of Rating Things, XP gets a 6/10, Vista gets 4/10.
(MacOS gets 8/10, Ubuntu gets 6.5/10, in case you were curious ) _____________________________________

7xxx series card wont do any DX10 and theres nothing impressive over DX9 yet. We have to wait few months to see whats gonna happen.
So far 99,999% of games are slower in Vista than in XP

Well, this thread is an interesting study in people's attitudes and prejudices. It seems that Vista is either loved or hated, depending on your hardware and the fact that as with any user experience your mileage may vary. However, to actually answer the OP it seems that either system will work just fine for you, and given that Vista is the future of Windows (however much we may wish it weren't) that is probably the wisest investment.
I will use XP until I feel Vista is actually finished, and when it offers compelling reasons to migrate instead of just a few feature tweaks and mediocre security improvements. (BTW, Ars has a good Vista review series. Vista appears to be better secured, but only time will tell for sure.)
The OP could certainly also use Linux or, once the client is released, MacOS X. What it comes down to is what you're most comfortable with. Any of these OS's will do what you want them to do. _____________________________________

I have almost that and Eve is fine with Vista, about the same as XP I suspect. I have 1Gb RAM and that's enough for Eve but not some other games (eg Civ IV).
If your soundcard is a Soundblaster and it stutters, turn off Aero. In fact if anything behaves oddly, try turning off Aero. Or, just turn off Aero anyway. Download the latest Nvidia driver, use the Nvidia control panel to set the card to Max 3D Performance for decent FPS.

With all of that "turning off" why upgrade at all? With that stuff "off", you might as well have XP.

Well - only reason I use Vista is because my XP is kinda in need of formating after more then a year of *censore* building up on it.
Too lazy to do a proper back up.
Everything I need works on Vista ( Office, surfing, EVE ). So realy no need to change back to XP.

Works fine. Perhaps a new GFX when EVE client finaly gets new GFX, but untill then, everythng works

Go with Vista. Why? Here's why:
1. Vista will support DirectX 10. The EVE graphic update will be supported by DirectX 10. XP does not, and will not, support DirectX 10. CCP will be releasing a DirectX 9 update as well, but they're going to be increasingly using DirectX 10 as their primary graphics driver.
2. Vista has, in my opinion, gotten a bad rap from people mainly because they're mad that Vista made their XP machines obsolete. It honestly is better than XP.
3. Probably in about a year Microsoft will drop all updates for XP and will only provide updates for Vista. Most other support for XP will probably also go bye-bye around that same time. Why get a brand new system with an OS that will only be supported for another year? Makes no sense.

I really don't get these arguments, I see them all the time You can stick with XP as long as you don't need Vista, but buying a new copy of XP is a nearsighted waste of money alot of people are doing these days... Heck, even putting off getting it and just installing XP is wasted time, everyone, and I meaneveryone will be using Vista in 2 years If you're going to shell out money for software get the new stuff!(Even installing software - you know, time is money!) Sure Vista isn't much better that XP *right now* But do you remember what XP was right after release? it was UTTER CRAP! that's what it was, it took a few years and SP2 to make it "decent" Vista is starting out much stronger than XP did - which is promising. Me? I still have XP, but at the first excuse I'm going to upgrade - already got the DX10 vid card and all the newest and hottest hardware, and as far as I'm concerned, Crysis and DX10 EvE can't come quick enough

The only problem with this link is it's from Jan 2007, we are now mid-June and things have improved. If you look at the XP reviews from the first days it came out they were also apalling with no software working or constant blue screens.
I've had vista since the end of Feb and had no problems except nvidia being very slow wih decent drivers. I run 2 clients all the time with no more lag than I used to get with my xp machine.
If you are building a new machine and getting a decent spec go for vista(just not the basic), get gfx card that will be DX10 ready for when it's needed and get 2gb of RAM. If its an existing machine, stick with xp.

Well i dual boot vista and XP on the same box so i get nice comparisons, rig is as follows. (PC was hand built none of this pre-built junk for moi)
Windows Vista Business AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ (2.8Ghz dual core) 4GB DDR2 PC-6400 RAM Geforce 8800GTX MSI K9N Diamond
People say that the time you gain by using vista is only like 2 seconds now this i have to disagree with, firefox opens near enough instantly as do many other applications, within EVE for example the bottleneck has now become how fast the server can feed me the data i get no lag at all even running 2 clients (not yet flown to jita to stress test it yet but i intend to at some point) i don't even see the DRM content that people are moaning about, might be because i don't use that awful excuse for a music app that is media player 11 (winamp 4tw even if it is made by AOL)
Next issue to address is the so called dodgy drivers, you people do know that you can use XP drivers under vista right? no well you can my wireless adapter has no vista driver and i doubt it ever will but pop in the installation CD for XP or even download the installer and it happily installs the XP driver without fuss and it works perfectly.
Hardware issues next, yes vista does require atleast 2GB of RAM on my machine for it to run speedy but this was a change everyone knew would be coiming and in all fairness it won't only be vista that will start requiring masses of RAM new games will also do the same so you'll need to buy more anyway. ---------

It depends on what you value I don't want my OS to screw me over more then XP does today so I will never install the Digital Restrictions Management(DRM) riddled OS that vista is on any of my computers. The day XP becomes impossible to run (plan for this day people it will happen) I will go GNU/Linux all the way and if I can't get games to run on it too bad for the games industry. I sure hope the games industry comes to their senses regarding sitting in MS technology prison. Because I really like to play games but giving that much control to MS is NOT an option.
So everything about how fast, good looking or anything else vista is, are totally uninteresting it boils down to how much control you want to give to MS.
I truly believe that everybody that goes vista will regret that one day, because it will screw you over.
Finally it really saddens me to see that CCP is so locked up with MS technology, I can only hope that they keep a client version that will be possible to get running under wine or something.
Just my 5 cents, I don't dislike people that go vista I only think they make a big mistake, so please people think a bit before going into the next circle of MS hell.

In an ideal world it might work but MS have the market advantage and its unlikely they will lose it as windows has become the standard OS for office PC's, TBH i still haven't seen the DRM in vista and from where i'm sitting i don't feel i've lost any control, if something annoy's me i get rid of it no issue there and so far its only the UAC that is annoying but i think its a decent enough feature so i'll keep ity active for the time being. ---------

If that hardware didn't run Vista fine, I think we'd all be worried
In regards to Vista DRM, it's most troubling when applied to new high-def media types. From the Computerworld article:
Quote: PVP (Protected Video Path) eliminates these security gaps, enabling a series of DRM measures that keep a high-resolution content stream encrypted, and in theory completely protected, from its source media all the way to the display used to watch it. If the system detects a high-resolution output path on a user's PC (i.e., a system capable of moving high-res content all the way to a user's display), it will check to make sure that every component that touches a protected content stream adheres to the specification. If it finds a noncompliant device, it can downgrade the content stream to deliver a lower-quality picture -- or it can even refuse to play the content at all, depending on the rights holder's preferences.
So in essence, if you're trying to play hd content and Vista thinks something in your system is hinky, your investment in hd media just became worthless. That's one example. There are many more. If you're fine with Microsoft having that level of control over your media, by all means buy into it. But I don't want Vista to succeed, not because it's not a good OS (I find it decent enough) but because of the numerous ways in which it's been compromised by DRM in the name of "security." _____________________________________

Oh yes, sure !!! Microsoft programm totally their OS each 3 months loool No, Vista is really BAD !!! All improvments have been canceled at the last minute !!! (I speak of Vista not the driver ... Driver for Nvidia have may be* reach the perf on XP :P
*May be : because, I don't have see test which better result on Vista than XP lol
Vista is the new "millenium" ... Microsoft develop already a new OS ... I think really better than XP ... OS = Launcher of applications ... If the launcher take more ressource than the application ...

so far all bench test have given best results in XP over vista.. so i would stick with XP until vista get some upgrades done, service packs and such. and until a game you want to play support full dx10, better than dx9 :)

I generally agree, but I do not think it gets a 'bad rap' because it makes XP obsolete. Personally, yes I may upgrade to vista after a while, but not until it gets a few more things worked out. Unlike a majority of people I wont jump on the vista band wagon right when it comes out.

well I choose and use Vista for more than one reason that suits me best. - XP was a little deflated, whilst Vista is fresh, sure I agree that drivers need to be discovered in a better way for some H/W types but support is getting a lot better now. - People seem to hate vista because the next person does. - XP has been around for a long time so you are comfy with your feet on the chair. as with vista your not right now. - just takes times to settle. but DO give it a chance as it does have its benefits. - and for me those are performance in almost all areas.

I'd definitly say Vista. There is so much software out there that doenst run on Vista nativly. And frankly i don't like this DRM crap they put in. My father has Vista on his new notbook and there is problems with just about everything he wants do do. Mainly becuae he has to use software meant for XP in order to perform hotsyncs with his smartphone etc.
My mother got Vista on her new OEM computer too, and there is also alot of problems with it. Mostly becuase the OEM sulton was interfering in someway but still, they need to get **** straight before they put it out.
Stick with XP, it wont hog all your RAM..
I could puke on vista.

I think it's unfair to call this a negative point for Vista, considering the fact that the user can easily change this button so that it does in fact shut down the computer.
I actually prefer that my computer enters S3 standby rather than shut down completely, so I find this a convenient feature.

That's the problem, nothing actually needs XP that won't work in 2000. With the exception of things that have recently been made to force the person to use XP, those usually require a small edit to work on 2000.
