What would add to the game play is to remove the silly maximum speed caps for all ships and simply have acceleration upto the speed of light. You can even implement the famous equations to stop people actually reaching speed of light in any reasonable amount of time .
Also make ships take damage from bumping. Flight control has to be more important.
That would be so cool!

Oipo System. Distance gate to gate = 160au
1au = 9 light minutes ( approx )
Time to cross Oipo = 9 x 160 = 1440 minutes = 24 hours exactly.
Hmmm I cant cross Oipo before the DT gets me :)

You're thinking of the wrong video game.

Edited by: Eleana Tomelac on 15/06/2007 14:08:26 I don't think he was telling of removing warp. Warp is one thing, moving with ion thrusters is another.
Your ship's stats would only be acceleration (in g or m/s¦) and rotate rate (rad/s).
Actually, the game is totally not designed for that, nothing would work. Maybe it could be done if some day there's a EVE¦.
The thing that could be done is to turn the ships in the direction of their acceleration vector rather than their actual speed vector. This would only be a "graphic" upgrade, and would not overload the servers as this would be only calculated on client (and it's about substract two vectors, it's not costy for client) and render very nice. Even an option to select which type you want for the ship moving style.
Any change on the basics of the game system could make a great imbalance, and this means that the only things to be improved are graphics. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast ! Happy owner of a Vexor Navy Issue and few ishkurs. The Vexor Navy Issue is much more fun than the Myrmidon ! |

I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that the game was programmed "jet fighter style" rather then true "space craft" do to limitation in hardware.
It's really not that big a deal though. Instead of max acceleration (which requires m/s/s and m/s, plus heading and direction of travel calculations) you get a max speed and a ship that points the way it's flying.

the devs have commented in the past that the servers have problems with ships moving to fast and it is not able to keep up. Part of the reason the nerfed MWD stacking.

Yeah...no.
The made-up physics of warp technology in EVE have you creating a bubble that is somehow immune to the laws of physics. HOWEVER...
Real warp technology does not mean that the ship is moving through space at a given speed. Rather, the ship moves space around itself, thus allowing the ship to "move" faster than light without violating the laws of physics.

There's some legitimate physics that supports the notion that an object moving at extreme speeds would "phase" through solid objects, so warping through planets might not be as silly as it seems.
I like the idea of showing the ship as heading in its acceleration vector, it would make my interceptors soom to power slide around big ships. Delightful.

Instead of saying "warp drive active" the new warp drive should just say "Engage." lol

The faster an object travels, the more it's mass increases. At the speed of light, an object has infinate mass and would therefore need infinate thrust to continue moving.
Science lands a well aimed shot, damaging you for infinity.

Sure, but you can approach c asymptotically, reaching 99.999999999% of the speed of light using finite (although prodigious) force.
It's still not a good idea for EvE, though.

Think of the poor servers and the effects of lag and postion updates (@ silly speeds) on gameplay.

Honestly, even at half the speed, ships would move so fast around you wouldn't even see it fly by.

I always thought of it as being more like the submarine model of spaceflight.
Also it's more a gameplay thing than a server thing, while a true relativistic simulation appeals to the sci-fi nerd in us all, it just wouldn't be at all fun to play, think about it for a sec, the first thing that would happen would be all this km stuff goes out the window and we start dealing thousands if not millions of km, then combat becomes a matter of extreme precision timing as two ships shoot past each other at insane relative velocities.
Anyway for better or worse that decision cant be changed without redoing everything combat and travel related yielding a new and different game.

Honestly, even at half the speed, ships would move so fast around you wouldn't even see it fly by.
Wouldn't be a problem, if you implement halfway realistic physics.
You need to keep track of three vectors: position, speed and acceleration.
Have a BS accelerate at a max of 3 m/s^2 (0.3g), or an interceptor at a max of 100 m/s^2 (10g).
Fighting will become harder than it is today, but we're not talking about any ridiculous speeds even approaching the speed of light - we're talking about using ship's systems to get where you're going or overshooting the target most of the time. That way, even a BS could reach high speeds, but it would take a LONG time - e.g. a BS travelling at 1000m/s took the best part of an hour to get there, but it will take the same time to stop... so, you *can* fly fast, I'm not sure if that's a good idea... ;-)
You'll need to have some quite advanced systems to navigate - basically, commands to tell the ship "i want to go there", "accelerate in this direction", "come to a stop", etc... the "i want to go there" command, for example, would need to calculate the direction and the duration of the acceleration and deceleration even before the ship starts to move. An advanced version of it might even be able to automatically navigate around obstacles...
