Currently I am caldari and for mission running purposes I trained caldari cruiser and missiles as missiles seem to be pretty good for pve mission running.
A little further down the line I want to start doing serious PvP, i understand from all the posts I have read that guns > missiles in pvp and I have already started training my gunnery skills up while I am saving money to get a decent ship in the near future.
However I am not sure which factions ships I should train to use in pvp. Can someone point me in the direction of an informative thread that has this sortof stuff in or give me a general recommendation ?
Additionally I have also thought about training drone skills aswell. They are currently in my 6 month plan that I put together using evemon, but I have left them till last.
All my learning skills are on 4 and I have got all the usual support skills trained to 3 or 4 and the basic ones i.e engineering, mechanic, navigation, electronics trained to 5

You'd be better off training another race (Gallente or Matari), but if you wanna stick to Caldari...then keep training gunnery and use a rokh.
Drones skills tbh don't need to go too high for caldari as they lack any good drone bays.

I thought about re-rolling but as I already have thest part of 2.5 million sp and all the learning skills where I want them to be I am not sure if I can go thorugh the "boring" part of waiting for that to all train again :(
Can't I just cross train another factions ships e.g gallente frigate etc or do I actually have to be gallente to learn that skill ?

You can train any race despite being Caldari, just buy the skill on the market and train it. Also train relative support skills for your ships.

Thanks for the info on that. The only prblem I have now is that I am not very knowledgeable about the other factions ships. With regards to support skills i got some generic ones up quite high i.e Mech, Eng, Elec, Energy management, and navigation as i thought these would probably be usefull regardless of what ship I was going to be in.

Go for amarr recon. You dont need gunnery skills for that.

if you don't want to pvp with caldari who are absolutely fine in groups i think minmatar would be a logical step as you can use your missile skills.

I would be quite happy to carry on with caldari, but everywhere i look on these forums all I see are posts saying that caladari suck at pvp and that guns / drones are the only real way to go.
Maybe its becasue I am newish to the game so i dont really know any better, but if they really are that bad then i thought maybe it was time to start sinking my SP into something more usefull ?

Missiles suck because they lack dps, they take time to reach the target and do close to nothing vs a speedy ship.
Honestly i'd keep investing in gunnery skills, rokh will be basicly the only battleship you'll be able to solo pvp with and actually kill something.

Yup things like that are good skills to have. Engineering, Mechanics, Gunnery, Electronics etc.
Caldari are ok in pvp, but just not solo. There's not many caldari ships that are capable of solo pvp. The simple reason is, most pvp modules (warp scramblers, stasis webifiers, target painters, ECM modules, tracking disruptors, sensor dampers etc) are mid slot items.
Unfortuantely for Caldari, their tank (shields) are also mid slot items. That means if you want to have a good tank (ie last longer in a fight) you must give up pvp units. Conversely, if you want to use lots of pvp equipment (say, keep someone in 1 place, etc) you have to give up some of your survivability. Combined with the fact that they have the slowest ships (on average) and generally use missiles as weapons (which, whilst always hitting and you can choose damage type, they take time to do their damage and often give lower damage per second than projectiles or blasters/railguns).
Gallente are nice ships to fly. They armour tank, which means their mid slots can be totally devoted to pvp stuff, whilst their multiple low slots (they have generally many low slots) are used to sustain their tank. Currently, Gallente are considered "the best" at "pvp" (if there is such a thing) because of this (plus their wonderful drone bays means they continue to do damage dispite being jammed/etc).
Minmitar are close behind, but are hard to train for because they tend to have split weapons.
For example, a minmitar ship may have both missiles and projectile weapons, and a shield tank. Another time it might be projectiles and an armour tank. Because of the split layout on a lot of their ships, whilst effective, they take a lot of time to train for effectively.
Minmitar use Speed as their advantage. They have the fastest ship speeds in the game, on average. And at close range (or even long range) that can prove to be a big advantage.
Amarr are .. well, up until Rev 2.0 they were/are not the best. They have very few mid slots (typically 1, 2 or 3 slots, sometimes even for battleships) and their main weapons use a lot of cap. However with Revelations 2.0 round the corner, there are promises of "love" towards Amarr so I wouldn't entirely ignore them.
My advice if you are caldari is keep your caldari skills so you can get isk through missions or ratting, and cross train into gallente. Railguns are also caldari weapons (Moa cruiser, Ferox battlecruiser, Rokh battleship, Merlin frigate etc) as well as being gallente. Both need lots of cap (caldari for tank, gallente for weapons) so it's pretty easy to cross train.
Then move into Minmitar since you'll already have shields, missiles, armour and guns
Then finally amarr.
But that's just me.
Good luck.
(please ignore any typos - corrections welcome)
