I'm not sure if I've missed something but
"0.4 Bonus to effective standing towards friendly NPC Corporations" sounds to me like a skill of lvl 4 would give a bonus of 1.6 to standing.
But thats not what I'm seeing...
For example my standing with Roden Shipyards is 5.75 (Connections 4 raises your effective standing 4.94)
5.75 - 4.94 = 0.81 not 1.6
Same goes for my standing towards the Gallente federation. Standing of 3.29 raised from 2.02. Thats only 1.27.
What am I missing here?

What it gives, is 4% (per level) of the difference between your current actual standing and 10.00.
10-4.94 = 5.06, 16% of which is 0.8096, rounded off .. 0.81
Increases from missions also work the same way - the amount it goes up is calculated as a %age of the remaining gap to 10.00 - which is why a perfect ten standing is actually impossible.
Edit: I should point out that I'm telling you this because the skill description is misleading; you didn't "miss" anything because what you needed to know just isn't there.

Ah, I was wondering why I couldn't use an agent that I thought I should be able to. Bah, I need two more important missions then...
Questions:
1. Does connections skill also apply to faction standing. I think it must do (I'm using a level 2 Lai Dai research agent, but my Lai Dai standing is 0.01 - shouldn't be high enough even with Connections), but the description says corp.
2. Is there anywhere I can see my standing to a given faction/corp adjusted to take account of Connections skill, or do I have to work it out myself every time?

Yes If you have Patch 1360 installed. Bring up the agent's information, then click the Standings tab, then click the sub-tab all the way on the right (i'm drawing a blank right now to it's name) and It'll show that agent's faction's feeling about you, their corp's feeling about you, and their feeling about you. It will say the actually standing, and the modified standing for your connections skill.

TomB: End the speed-race. 1 propulsion mod allowed, make turrets affect ship attributes like +speed/+ab speed +agil for progressivly smaller/lighter turrets, -speed/-ab speed -agil for long-range. |

Yes. Faction, Corp, and Personal..
...but it only kicks in once you actually *have* a standing with someone; so if you've never worked for, or shot down a convoy of, a given corporation, you have no standing and nothing for the Connections skill to work on.

Thanks for the info, Baldour. I didn't understand because the skill description IS very misleading. I thought it meant I got a +1.2 to standing (Connections 3). However, it makes sense now.
