Well, it can't, at least not significantly to force a complete turn-around. Anything bigger than a cruiser won't be impressed by a shuttle tbh.

Overall I had many times the same confusion. EVE lacks in many cases of realism because of mission physics.
I can shoot through objects, you can warp scramble through objects, no collision with damage, Titans behave like mininatures when they get ganked hard [no mass there?] ... and and and ...
For sure CCP have thought about that and probably some future plans. CCP will have a reason why they have not implemented such stuff. This will need more CPU power to calculate the behavior between loads of objects in a battle and mainly cause more horrible lag due sharing more information between Server and Clients.

The ingame "collision model" seems to not taking the different masses into calculation. Moreover, a ship behaves different to a can: you can bump an unmoving BS with a fast ceptor but the small and unmoving can will be nearly unaffected.
However, what would happen if masses are applied?
Imagine a large station like Rens VI-8 or any other main Jita station. Hosts of ships around the undocking area. At the moment, usually all ships are more or less stopped and form one big mess after undocking. With masses applied, each undocking freighter would send all other ships far off. Ok, no big deal in empire space but extra cool in 0.0 :P
Now imagine the same at a stargate. You want to take-over a freighter in a frig but touch his signature. What happens? you are bumped towards who-knows at 20 km/sec. Possible exploit: station a few freighters around a gate to close the most-used routes and the gate is effectivly unpassable for anything smaller than another freighter!
Hence, all so far posted physical or mathematical models can not be applied ingame. It's all for gamers' safety and yeah, it's a pity ofc :)

echem.. u seem irritated, now im not drunk so i wont comment in the madish, kind of way ( though i loved the description of ur biker. priceless) first of all were in space, space kinda defies some of the laws of physiscs. nontheless, a smaller ship with smaller mass should indeed not knock a 400 x bigger ship km away. but to fool myself and yet keep tha game realistic i like to think of it this way.. (still unrealistic but it beats this )
eve is in the year 22000 whatever and i think we could safly say that our ships can think somewaht for themselves, so when a ship is incoming (frig goes and bumps bs ) a sensor in the bs makes it boost its arse away (cause it doesnt want to get hit by frig cause its still pain ) frig salso boosts away, yet still havent found out why a bs flies faster than it ever would be able to in a bump... but ... you know maybe
just maybe they should make bumping hurt... so each time when ur drunk ( as u said u were ) and u play eve and bump into a station it makes u have apin , but oh wait ur drunk so you dotn care you liek how white turns into red and how it makes u a a dead person.. then the next morning ur all sober and u cry cause you lost ur ship to a station .. ( lol fail ) that sure as hell would make it darn realistic but ud lose 300 mil on ur perty t2 blasterthron or whatever u fly.. we want that to happen? no cause i like playing eve drunk...
so accept it , u wont be able to make it more realistic , ( maybe some cahnges ) but hell its fine with me , i like bumping cause its funny,
tip for u sir: mopve ur darn ship then its nearly impossible to get bumped unless ur in a carrier or dread or titan or mom, but at that point u shouldnt be in the possion of dying when bumped... kk. ima go eat a sanwitch now

Bumping is your grief with EVE physics?
There is a lot of things with the physics and realism of this game that are not "science", bumping is very low on that list.
How about:
When you turn your engines off, you slow down!
As someone well versed in in the world of physics that makes me cringe a bit.
But, this is a game and a masive one at that, I suggest we just learn to live with what it offers? ;)
You should try freespace, it has real physics, fun in a way but control demands a LOT of the player, and that is just not the way of MMO's.
Now the use interface is another story, it is very realistic, if we were living in the 1990's, I much rather they made that up to par with todays science than the physics engine.
Oh, and a ceptor going 20km/s doing a 180 would liquidize the pilot.. ;)

Weightless yes... Even weightless you have mass and the more mass you have the more energy it takes to move you. So moving a battleship is extremely hard to do, hence the massive engines and AB needed to move and increase its velocity.
Bumping as it is now is bad.. I believe everyone agrees with you on that but in order to put something in place you would need a huge rewrite and then balance it.
For instance when pushed out of a station from undocking people bunch up and it turns into a bumper carfest, if you add collison damage here everyone one would get the crap smashed out of their ships. Granted they could exempt stations from damage ect.
So we are left with gates and open space right? Factor in asteroids belts.. people would bang up their ships there to and dont forget all of those cargo containers.
When warping to a stargate how many times have you come out of warp and hit the gate? Me.. alot... but if you are close to the gate you can still jump even while the ship is twisting and turning.
Im sure they want to do something about damage ect with bumping but the fact is that would take alot of time.. not a few weeks or a few months, a long time. Why, because they would have to factor in every ship for mass and velocity then take a base damage and minus shields, armor and structure ect. Also what is to stop players from taking say a titan and just driving it through a battle and crushing all the ships smaller than it? At that point weapons are useless.

No change at all, but there's probably some stabilizing/reverse thrust mechanism going on to make sure that ships stops if you put the speed to 0. ------ --Don't get saucy with me Bernaise!-- |

In space there is no gravity so if you bump something it would move off course. haven't you seen videos of astronauts (spel) moving large objects using there little finger in space sations....
so you asking for realism...its kinda there...if its still not good enough I have a better game...its called 'RLXtreme' you start off as a tiny egg over nine months you can start training skills....speech, understanding. Its awesome cos when you have been playing a while you can take your cloths with female players and do all sorts of great and crazy things...you should check it out. 1 catch theres no save button or 'continue' screen when you get 'CONCORDokend'. -----

In my opinion, I'm not bothered about the physics of bumping. EVE is a game and not RL so the dev can do whatever they want. If they find bumping as [exploit/unbalanced/whatever] they will eventually change it.

Would liquidize the pilot in a fluid filled capsule designed to compensate against that very thing?

Railguns have a muzzle velocity of 2.5km per second or Mach 7.5. A projectile traveling at the speed of light has a velocity of 327,360km per second.
Speed of Light 186,000 mile per second, 5260feet in a mile or in this case 1760 meters.
186,000 x 1760 = 327,360,000 meters per second.
