1. Heavy Beams, because they're on the **** machine otherwise known as the Zealot (good range, good DPS, good tracking, etc) 2. 1400 Artillery, because they let you alpha through RR.

Sniping can be very useful in PVP, but only under specific circumstances (Alpha Maels).

For alpha sniping, Muninns work also. And Lokis, if you are into a bit of pimp. But really, Zealots do the medium-turret sniping thing better. |

425mm rail guns I think get the absolute longest range with t2 ammo. Crappy tracking if anything lands near you and you havfe to give up your mid slots to sebos etc. Cruise also is very long range but terrible for pvp.
Sniper ships are very niche these days, especially battleship. You see some sniper hacs around but never really see sniper fleets. |

For BS, but true for pretty much every class:
Longest range: 425mm rails on a rokh Highest damage: Tachyon beam lasers Highest alpha: 1400m howitzers |

What caused the decline of the sniper fleet? Last time I was involved in blob wars, admittedly about a year ago, it was pretty much ALL about sniper BS fleets + support. |

I think its because people figured out you can just warp a crap load of BCs ontop of a sniper fleet and take out a fleet twice your size while risking half the isk. |

Most of the 0.0 BS fleets are based around alpha maelstroms right now, with heavy logi support. Reason being that multiple ships kicking out 10k alpha with longer reload times pops stuff before it can receive RR and also mitigates the effects of lag somewhat. If you're wanting a fleet FOTM sniper setup, go maelstrom with 1400s. |

best sniper bs: 1. apoc with tachs 2. rokh with 425mm rails (VERY close second) 3. maelstorm with 1400mm (VERY close 3.) 4. domi with t2 sentries (i s*** you not, a bit tricky and one-sided to use though) the domi can sport a better tank and better gank for the entire engagement range, but is not good for much else. the maelstorm is favored by medium sized fleets due to its alpha, while the others are better in larger fleets, because alpha matter less with higher numbers.
ravens are suboptimal because their dps takes time to arrive and your target can warp to the next on grid BM avoiding the damage entirely |

The change of titan dooomsday AOE damage allowed people to no longer rely on having battleships with EHP to survive a doomsday blast (or 2). It also meant blobs could be even bigger as there was no real deterrence to it. Sniper hacs/BS were essential for staying at range and getting out when titans started hitting the field.
The transition to armor hacs/bc fleets was a direct result of this change.

There is also the fact that Snipers are now probable, and quite capable of getting warped to and ganked at range 0 by smaller ships. |

Sniping died with the probing updates. Anyone can easily land right on top of you now in about 60 seconds. |

Sniper BS (probes) > RR BS (bombers) > Gank BS / Drakes (tracking formula) > AHACs (more Drakes) > Gank Baddons > Alpha Maels > return to sig-based counters (eg., Tengus).
Alot of people have a tendency to forget that at the size and bracket where they humbly began, AHACs were used as a counter to emerging BC-blobs. Around AT8 alot of groups laborated with AB HAC / Tech III solutions to counter missile spam. Keeping it in it's original small-medium element, various AHAC concepts are still pretty decent against BC-blobs. It just doesn't scale well enough up to "PL vs. NC vs. DRF vs. A-block" sizes. |

Apocrypha expansion, if I recall correctly. I didn't do any probing back then, but I remember the sniper BS fleets. And I remember them being gone around the time of that expansion.
60 seconds?

The probing update is when you can deploy probes and then move them into position, as opposed to move into position and then deploy probes. Also, reusable probes.
For on grid probing, 60 seconds is enough to run the process twice for any decent prober. |

Beams have the highest DPS.
Artillery has the highest Alpha.
Both have good ships to be put into.
Rails have DPS of artillery with Alpha lower than lasers.
Its saving grace is that the range bonus on Rokh might be enough for you to use better damage ammo. |
