Edited by: Sentinel Eeex on 19/06/2007 13:08:17 I'm asking because I was under impression that onboard scanner can not find exploration sites.
However, I've just found an ArchSal site in low-sec, using only onboard scanner.
Signal strength was 0.0197, which also puzzled me at first (before I warped in), because such low signal strength is usual for exploration sites.
Didn't expect to find one with onboard scanner, in 30 seconds.
Screenshot
Site was real, cans + NPCs were there, etc.
CCP, please don't tell me I wasted time training exploration skills, and this is not intented behaviour.
Thanks.
EDIT: eve-files removed the pic for some reason, hopefully it'll be ok w/ ImageShack |

There should be now 2 type of sites. easy find ones and hard find ones :) for the hard ones u still need probes http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/9741/rinaldo2ir8.jpg |

Test server just went down (or is about to), otherwise I'd take a screenshot of the site itself.
Trust me, it is the "usual" hard-to-find exploration site. |

Exploration sites and expedition fall under same category (cosmic signatures) - so you can find them with onboard scanner, but chances are very slim for explo.
As you see your signal was 0,019 - using normal probe it would be abt 0,3-0,4.

I still think CCP screved over people who have astrometrics 5. It was prereq. for signal acquisition so i trained it up. Now signal acq doesnt need it anymore (max astrom.4 is needed for other skills). Yay for 3 weeks wasted.
If that skill at least was useful. But it isnt... Wow - you can select ALL groups for scanning - but "scrap" doesnt work anyways. So thats 4 groups = 4 levels...

Edited by: Aramendel on 19/06/2007 18:03:00 Uhh.. it was never the prereq for SA on TQ.
But, yes, astro 5 is a bit useless. It only allows you to use some of the longrange probes, but that is not exactly worth 650k sp.

That's what bothers me. Luck.
I jumped into Hasama, warped to Planet 1, started a scan, and 30 seconds later I had a hit.
Was I *that* lucky? |

You absolutly were *that* lucky, If you scan alot with the exploration probes you'll learn quickly just how far your luck can vary with exploration. I cant count the number of times i've probed out an exploration site on my first scan (only counting the initial contact, once you get a reading and move to the stronger probes its extremely easy to find since you know right where to place the proper size to guarantee it is in range)but I also cannot count the number on times its take 2+ hours to find a single elusive site.
You got lucky twice, not only did you manage to find an exploration (not encounter) site with vastly inferior sensor strength but you also managed to coincidentally pick the proper planet to scan from. Having both those conditions match up at the same time is probably quite rare. ------------------------------- C.D's Formula for success ------------------------------- Credit Card = Game Time Card Gametime Card = ISK Therefore Credit Card = ISK.

God that's so true. Gravimetric sites are the ultimate examples, and a damn good reason to start with those difficult-to-place probes on the planets near the sun. They're also a good reason you bring a good book and a stable connection (losing a system full of carefully-placed probes = /cry).
Finding a regular exploration site first time with the onboard scanner was a gigantic fluke. Now if it was a gravimetric site I'd be on the floor about now
... and I need to get some probes built :)
