What a job. Play a game for a living and the people who played sound like they enjoyed it to some degree. Good for them. People should havea job they like

An interesting read but still I hope that some day there will be an end all solution for the RMT problem that haunts allmost each and every MMORPG out there.
And as far as I'm concerned we shouldn't blame the farmers or the middlemen. But blame those that will use everything at their disposal to gain an edge in a game.
I'm personally against the time card / ISK trade but that's a whole different story.

Interesting. What I'd like to see in a future article is if the gold farmers find it harder to farm in EVE then for instance WoW, or not.

For the people working in the "Gold Farms" it provides them with a steady income. And tbh I don't expect them to earn more in the local factory were our Nike's, Reebok's etc. are made.
And allthough it might sound dull and boring perhaps they still have some pleassure in making money with something they see as a hobby as well.

The previous post on this article got off-topic, so I'm responding to this one.
The dirty little secret of the "gold farming" is that much, if not most, of the gold isn't being bought by pre-teen kids new to the game--it's bought by high-end players who think that they're above having to work to pay the in-game bills for ships and equipment. I discovered this in the previous MMO that I played, when I found that it was the Guild leaders, more than anyone else, who were hitting up the gold-selling sites for in-game money to buy high-end equipment in order to compete with the other Guilds. The amounts that they would buy were ten times what a new player might spend to get their character equipped. But the high-end players were too busy with running the Guild, and they just couldn't be bothered to work for the gear that they needed to keep up with the "competitors".
At some point in the past, MMOs came to be more about keeping up appearances and being first in the "rankings", as if those mean anything, than about having fun. I would like to think that EVE as a game is better than many others with respect to the "gold farming", but even so, I suspect that if the gold buyers in the game were "outed", you'd see some of the most well-known--and otherwise highly-respected--players on the list.

I don't think that goes for EVE, seeing that CCP has allowed it for people to sell GTC's for ISK. This means that the players you just discribed just have to aquire a few GTC's from CCP and now they can safely within the rules sell these GTC's for ISK.
So GTC's for ISK = $ for ISK. The only difference now is that CCP benefits from it so it's legit.

The only difference is that you can do $$$->GTC->ISK, you can also do ISK->GTC, but you CAN'T do GTC->$$$.
Simpler said, $$$->GTC<->ISK. And that's good enough.
Why ? It eliminates the farmers, while not touching the buyers (which will never get touched much anyway). It just makes it much more EXPENSIVE for the buyers, as they have to contend with ISK from non-farmers. Of course, it's not perfect, and ISK->$$$ still happends, but it's more risky for the "farmers", thus either less likely to happend (or the volume traded is lower). _ New char creation guide | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

When I first found out that you can trade GTCs for ISK, it bothered me; for obvious reasons. Then, I thought about it and I realized that at least this way, the people which are effectively buying ISK, are subsidizing someone else's account.

This just underlines the fact that the real problem are the cheaters who buy ISK from them.
