I understand that all ships will now have the ability to probe for exploration sites. For the past few months, I've been working on covert ops and probe skills because I wanted to go exploring in a Helios. So did I waste all that time...are probes even still necessary to find exploration sites?

My alt is in the same position and was rather worried, like 3 months of train time you know...
But I red the dev blogs and threads, here is the thing. The scanner they are adding has a strength of 5 (afaik) and a range of 4au. So it can be only used to scan for the easy common encounters they are going to be adding.
Still need probes to find the true exploration content. In comparison:
Scanner 4AU / 5 strength Quest Probe 4AU / 250 strength Pursuit Probe 2AU / 500 Comb Probe 1AU / 1000 strength Sift Probe 0.5AU / 2000 strength
So if you have done any with those you know it takes forever to nail things down, so imagine what the chances of finding them with a 100 times weaker strength is. So no worry there.
What worries me if those low-grade encounters show and our probes start picking them up, hope there will be a way to distinguish them from the real deal.

From patch notes: http://myeve.eve-online.com/updates/patchnotes.asp?sid=1057603772
Quote: Finally, a built-in scanner that has no requirements for additional skills or modules will be added to assist with finding low-risk encounters.
Quote: All ships now have a built-in exploration scanner. This device has a 5AU range, 25 sensor strength in all types, a 30 second duration and can only scan for Cosmic Signatures. It is not affected by skills, rigs or bonuses.
The way I understand this is that there is "low-risk" exploration which just uses the new built in scanner and then the previous system with the more valuable but harder to find signatures.

Im also hoping that the probes dont pick up the low end content as well. :(
ship scanner will pick up low end but not high probes will probably detect both.

The ship scanner is designed to find encounders, an unknown type microsized complex.
Those hace a high signature that are easy to find with the ship scanners, and impossible to miss with probes but dont give high rewards, only some bountys and a change to get a commander npc (even in 0.9)
The probes are still necessary, ou yeah, especially because the static plexes have been converted to exploration sites that need probes to be found... -----------------------------

What I find more "problematic" is that multispec probe will probably find all junk, even the worthless that I don't really want to find. And ship scanner will just help me ... waste 30s on each planet before dropping 4au quests.

It would be nice if scanner was only able to pick up a cosmic sig. different from the 4 the scan probes pick up.

Seems likely that if the signal strength of one of the new encounters is high enough to be caught by the new scanner, using a probe the signal strength will be high enough to be easily differentiated from the older exploration sites.

encounters ( 1 in 25) from my SISI testing have commander spawn or faction * loot then pretty dodgy* low risk small sites basically easy and quick ( all unknown) more for small groups of the casual player
exploration sites will remain as is higher rewards high time sink etc. ( larger corps groups scan probe skills) just means that with both exploration and encounter sites each solar system will hvae more * stuff in it in PVE-NPC sense* ive said all along the distribution amounts are low this just fills the gaps.
Might also encourage players to move around to quite systems over time will have a buildup of both exploration-encounter sites whereas busy systems will be empty within 1 hour of dt

While we're on the subject, what's the droprate been like so far for encounters that escalate to a commander spawn? I've had two so far in the drone regions that escalated for about 5 waves before the commander came, both times dropping no loot whatever. Both took about 45min to do.
This is really rather annoying, especially considering the lack of bounties.
