Ok, so I loaded the new patch and ran Eve. it loaded fine. I changed a skill and logged off. now, 2 hours later, I launched the client, and red blue and green pixels exploded all over the screen. it was 'flashy' too with changing dots/blobs of color just before black screening with a big 'no signal' on my monitor.
My machine rebooted quickly, trying to shrug off what I can only assume was an EM pulse delivered straight from the CCP Headquarters Secret Mountain Hideout.
Windows welcomed me, and began to boot as normal. Thats when I realized that the dots of pixels were still there. Blobs of them had gathered as if some alien coitus ritual had begun. I moved my mouse to dispell them but to no avail. In fact, their number grew, just before my PC flatlined again.
I am able to boot into safe mode without a problem, and have removed Eve.... it didn't help. It seems Eve fried something. Before flaming my antiquated system, know that it's been running Eve very well for over a year.
I'm going to try reloading the driver for the graphics card. If anyone has ideas pls let me know.

perhaps it just broke, it happens and chances were at least one or 2 people's card would break just after patching. I hope this is'nt case for you though

Eve didn't do it, you just happen to been playing Eve when your graphic cards appears to have been damaged most likely due to its own heat.

Maybe you are right. I've uninstalled Eve completely, and reloaded my graphics card driver. The machine glitches out just after windows starts to load. The welcome splash screen is covered in random glowing pixels. all over the screen. sometimes they flash a bit before the machine completely locks up and crashes completely.
Safe mode display is fine. no random glowing pixels.

oops thats my alt...
It seems that others are experiencing some video difficulties. I can grab another graphics card tomorrow at work and try that, so it's not that big of a deal to me. I'm just wondering if this problem will manifest itself with greater frequency. Perhaps you are right, that it was just coinsidence, or 'fate' or that my PC pwned me. - In my experience though, I ain't that lucky.

Now before I begin I am not in anyway blaming EVE for the mishaps that have occured.
However there seems to have been a rash of users effected, this is the 3rd post I have come across in mear moments. It may well be the new lines of code used to run EVE are playing havoc with older systems.
This is just a guess, and in no way should anyone jump up and down and say "See it is EVE fault" Frankly if your playing eve with an outa the box HP, or Compaq with no upgrades since windows 98 SE, your vid card was bound to die eventually anyways, the new processes mearly stepped it along by a few days.
I have as yet to see a post by a user with a relativly (say 2004 or later machine) newer machine, posting that thier card died. More to the point older comp users have experianced this, or similar issues, and been able to reload thier drivers, or update thier drives, and get back to workable levels with no issues. I'd be willing to bet its an issue dealing with older drivers for pre-2004 vid cards, that is the problem.
Again this is just a guess, and in no way should anyone start yelling that EVE killed thier comp..., after all anything older then 3 years is bound to be on its downward cycle of life as far as modern day electronics goes.

I completely agree with that... older boxes DO have problems with newer software... I guess what stings is not the fact that my machine won't boot properly (i'm willing to get a new graphics card, i have a shelf full @ work) - the part that sucks is that YESTERDAY I was playing fine. - and although I know my machine isn't top of the line... it was doing pretty darn good. I ENJOY (ed)playing eve on it. - and I don't think it's THAT old... my system definitely meets the minimun reqs... like I mentioned, maybe it WAS just a coincidence, a fluke - maybe my aftermarket cooling didn't do it's job. No alarms went off, and sensors indicate normal op temps... I'll find out tomorrow, when I install a new graphics card.

Linux (Mandrake) boots fine for me on the same machine. No graphic problems whatsoever.
Could it be that this patch corrupted windows itself?

For those who shake their heads in disbelief that EvE could be the cause of video cards dying, I can attest that EvE does things to them. When I log into EvE the sound of the FAN's on my Video card become audibly louder. This is the same for the FAN on my CPU. The heat monitor on my Abit MaXX3 motherboard shows a visible increase in heat levels when EvE is playing. EvE is a very CPU intensive programme and sucks power and CPU like no other programme I run. My system is-

It's not EVE, your card died on its own. Same thing happened to my 1800xt late last year. The screen would start to flicker on and off, sometimes returning with the signal all messed up. It'd have these on/off episodes for minutes on end before calming down.
Few months ago, I started noticing "image burn" on my monitor. But it wasn't on my monitor, the screen was just fine, but ghost images would be drawn on screen and could actually be dragged around if they happened to be on a window or something. Quite curious.
Two months ago all my DX games started getting vertex corruption. Random vertices would "explode" off to somewhere. Most times it'd be one or two, but in some games, like EVE, it would be pretty noticeable (in EVE, the UI would go berzerk). This could (random chance) be solved by resetting the display (like by changing the resolution). Fun times.
And last months, pixels would start showing up on the screen. What's neat is that if they're on a scrollable item (like a browser or word processor) they would draw multicolored lines.
Best of all, I can't use any drivers other than the 6.11. Any after that will crash the system seconds after logging into Windows, and any before won't even get me that far.
My guess, dead memory area fudged everything up. And it seems like it happened to you too.

actually the 5900 series card has served me very well over the past year or so... I know it's not the be all end all, but it was enough for me to enjoy playing the game. Even in fleet engagements, everything looked fine.
I've commandeered a new graphics card from my work, although I have my doubts about this card too.
ATI Radeon 9550 256mb
If anyone has advice for a new graphics card under 200 bucks pls let me know... or would the general consensus be to just invest in a completely new system?
Thanks for the replies, and the advice.

the same exact thing happened to my computer! using a 6600gt! It started just before the installation of Rev2(before they put the new patch)! I have no problem playing other games so it's definitly not a video card issue! And for the people that are going to say "install last nvidia patch", i did install the patch! And my comp is up to date! i would like some explanation from CCP!!

You can get an ATI Radeon X850 from Newegg for around $140 US last I checked. It'll run Eve beautifully, and if you've still got an AGP motherboard then it's pretty close to the best card you'll be able to use. Might want to shell out an extra $30 for a decent heatsink, though; the one that comes stock with it is completely terrible.

In the realm of vid card upgrades I'd say save up and get an entirely new setup. An AGP video card is a tech dead end right now. You will not find any new machines with that slot.
My recomendation is to snage a decent (read about 70-80 USD) motherboard and one of the lower tier core2duo processors.
Yes you will need new ram too, but in the end you will have a system that is leaps and bounds faster and likely cooler than your old system. More importantly you will be able to use the parts on a piece by piece build of a new system. Sell off the old machine for a hundred or two, and use that to get started.
oh yah, and newegg.com is the *only* place to look. may not be the cheapest but they have been good to me a number of times with dead on arrival (doa) hardware returns.

I strongly suggest removing your gfx card and inspecting the fan. There is a big chance it isn't spinning. This happened to my old ATi card (x700 Pro)... it just so happened on that that the fan literally launched off the drive shaft and straight into the chip's own heatsink... plastic fan vs. metal heatsink at high velocity = bent up heat sink... fortunately it didn't touch anything else in the computer.
If the fan is still attached, try oiling it (use multipurpose oil, not vegetable oil or anything - those will gunk up), if not... dump it... but it's probably your card getting too hot too quick, as you've noted. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had this issue when the fan on my old ATI 9600 died. i would get about 5 minutes of normal operation before the screen went all disco on me. solved it by binning the card and buying a new one

yea lol i had a 7900gt that went mental on me, it was awsome! it added a whole new depth to gameplay, really made games challenging! only being able to see 20% of whats on the screen with the rest being filled up with artifacts! loads of artifacts!
shouldent have wound it up so much.............

i dont understand why you guys are talking about getting a new video card. the problem is not the video card but the new eve patch itself! Everything is fine in my comp, i can play everyother game(CS:S, Unreal Tournament 2004, Quake 4, Fear, Warcraft 3, Need for speed carbon) without a single pixel problem!!! Eve was not giving my computer any problems before the patch! There is definitly something wrong with that patch!

yea you cant "forum post" your card into fixing itsself i hope ccp get the issues sorted in a few days. my games runs ok, alot of bugs in the game thow, but WHOOP DEE %%%%ING DOO i had 4 game crashes last night alone... (my 7900 works fine, it was a different game that killed it a while ago) really whay did you guys expect?
CCP to apply the patch without any errors of bugs? presonally theres more chance of me overthrowing the directors of BoB with a kestrel and some t2 rockets than there is of an error free patch.

You and I were both WRONG my friend. I suspected (hoped?) that it was the patch and not the video card - but the good egghead denizens of eve knew better. I didn't have any problems before the patch either, but installing a new card confirms that it was a hardware problem. A heat sink actually... why no alarms went off is a different problem I'll worry about later.
Eve is running fine now - with a Radeon 9550. The card cost me nothing so I think it worked out great.
CCP - good job. imagine my embarrasment.
Thanks to all who offered advice, and best of luck to those with problems like this.

I just experienced this problem. I have a Q6600 and the HD2900XT ati card. Suffice to say it aint my system. My PC is also configured correctly and completely stable since I built it 2 months ago. I have had zero problems since getting it this way, until the EVE Revalations II patch. First a BSOD pointing nowhere(this usually means a memory problem - but not in this case) then a reset with no BSOD. My PC components are not overheating as I have 39 celcius temp all round while playing. I have no error messages in any admin logs. This is not a problem with old/new/cheap/expensive hardware, except in some peoples circumstances, but rather a patch bug. Hopefully the devs can recreate the error with one of their machines since this problem is not ati or nvidia or single/dual/quad core machine specific, but is affecting people with quite random specs. Glad im still on the trial anyway ;)
