Post-patch, my GUI seems awfully sluggish. That is, pre-patch it was usual (and expected) that when you moved or stacked lots of items, the game "froze" for a moment, but now it's doing it everywhere, even when I just stack 2 items or move 1 item from cargo to hangar, it's pretty annoying. This sluggishness appeared on fitting/unfitting modules back with Rev 1, now it does it even when I load/unload ammo and in general these tiny freezes seem slightly longer than they used to be.. any idea what's causing it?

Edited by: Sheila Chandra on 20/06/2007 12:43:50 hmm i had those prepatch and now they are almost gone. At last the nasty little freeze when i sell / bought something via orders is gone (which was really nasty when my trader char had a 2sec freeze every 10sec) and overall the GUI seems much more smoothy now

That'll be back. It's a cache directory filling issue. The reason it's gone away is because the new cache directory is freshly emptied with the Rev2 copying on first run.

That has always existed. Nothing much you can do about it. Most people have got so used to the little stutters they don't realise how much of an effort it is to micro-manage.

Sure, I didn't mind the little stutters but these small freezes we're talking about now, post-patch, are about 4-5 seconds..
ETA: I do occasionally empty the cache but maybe the slowdown is caused by accessing it from a different partition on the HD? How do I move the cache back to where it was instead of C:\ because I'm not on Vista?

Okay, the tip was elsewhere on this forum.. just edit the eve shortcut, add " if the target has spaces (it should already have those) and after that add "/end /LUA:OFF" (without the "s). This sets stuff back where it was, after starting client once I exited and copied settings back from their C:\ location (note that prefs.ini is in the C: cache\settings dir, while in the game dir it's in the cache dir).
Lag is gone. Well sure, market, fitting and so on still lag like they used to but at least basic usage is back to normal.

Hmm that could be, for windows its generally better to have everything except windows itself on a seperate harddisk to avoid perfomance problems when windows is reading a file while a program needs too. Thats one of the things why i hate programs using windows folders to store data

Looting/Salvaging does cause a 3-4 second freeze that will prove to be deadly eventually. Opening a wreck (or can) causes a freeze, moving the items from the wreck/can to your cargo causes a freeze and closing the wreck/can/cargo causes yet another freeze. Finally, right after doing all that, when I then pan around, I get yet another freeze. It seems as if the client is unloading or 'forgetting' textures/models/location data of everything not currently in view when you are looting items.
Before the patch, no such hiccup. During the mission "Gone Beserk" where you have 20+ drones around you for nearly the entire encounter, you quickly end up with alot of wrecks. My drones would take care of the npc drones while I would tank and fly from wreck to wreck. It was quick and easy. Now with Rev II out, attempting to do that in the middle of the encounter would be idiotic.
In addition, I noticed that sometimes distances were reporting incorrectly. Acceleration gates were the most common instance whereby I'd warp into a deadspace location and see an acceleration gate. Targeting it shows it's 15km away so I begin my approach. 2sec later, distance reports at 0m and I'm able to activate the gate. In 2 sec, my fatbottomed BC can't cover 15km. Continued clicking of approach does nothing as the system believes I'm now 0m away. Manually approaching the gate works but the distance does not change. I'm not necessarily complaining about this, because activating a gate from 15km away could prove to be handy.

Wow, Eve is getting even worse I guess. Never would have thought it was so dependant on the HDD performance. That sucks.

It's a game breaker for me.
CCP appear to be incompedant. This flaw is as old as Eve is and they seem incapable of lifting a finger to fix it. :( It's almost like the game is in perpetual proof-of-concept pre-alpha state.
They've hinted at a possible improvement with the new graphics engine due next year but CCP's trackrecord has really drained hope from me to be honest.

It's quite clear now that the flaw as a general problem extends well beyond the 3D rendering engine. I truely wonder if CCP is doing anything at all to address stutter.
