Just a quick release based on some footage shot earlier in the month. Top Gun fans should appreciate the lengths i've gone to synchronise with the opening credits. if you're too young to know what Top Gun is...well...*le sigh*

note that i was flying under RIOT tags at the time.

thanks guys.
i fraps at my game resolution of 1680x1050. i locked it at 25fps so i dont get spatial distortion in the resulting footage (e.g. the movie speeds up and down as the graphics card draws and redraws). as i end up encoding at 25fps i might as well record in it too.
this then gets dropped onto a background of 1680x1160 so that i can add the tag lines at the bottom of the page etc (like the horizontal plane at 1680, it also creates a vertical plane that can be divided by 16 so that the codecs can encode better)
my future releases i think will be at a cinematic aspect ratio - recently i've switched to widescreen view while still playing at 1680x1050. visually i think it will make for better movies and also i can have all my channels, comms stuff and other random things all hiding in the black that can be cropped out during editing
i had several goes at encoding to mkv but each one either failed my processor test (e.g. loading it onto my single core, benchmark pc) or visually, the resizing just didn't work out. even in this encode there are a couple of points where i really should have gone for a slightly higher bit-rate (close-ups of the carrier etc) but for 124mb i think it's just fine.
for those interested, i fraps, then encode my fraps into wmv at either 10,000 kbps or 12,000 kbps depending on which tool i use (key-framing every 3 secs). the codec resulting encoded wmv will usually round out between 6000kbps-7500kbps. this all gets stacked into premier and edited. i do 2 exports, one into lagarith lossless for use in re-encoding to anything other than wmv. for wmv encoding i just do it straight from premier (as i find ms wmv9 encoder slightly flakey - it tends to not like the audio streams for some reason).
