Anyone own/have used a PSP to give me a blunt list of why or why not to buy a PSP? I've not owned a handheld console since the black and white Gameboy way back in the 90's, and want something to do in class (you know, besides learn).

Let's see... My brother has a PSP, but he plans to sell it to me.
OutRun 2006 owns and Every Extend Extra should own more than the freebie PC original.
Just try to avoid a game that requires use of the analog nub though, because that thing is just crap.

I like the idea of the nub, gives me practice for later when I actually get a life.

Edited by: Vari on 20/06/2007 23:03:24 I side with Nintendo for this round. Yes modding a DS (if you choose to) is more expensive, but there are just so many good games for it. Of course, it's all about the games, if you like the ones on the PSP more, go with that.

PSP wins hands down.
If you download the custom firmware, you can download and play the following platforms on PSP, for free:
Atari Commadore 64 Nintendo Super Nintendo Nintendo 64 Game Boy Game Boy Advance Sega Master System Sega Genesis Sega Gamegear Neo Geo MAME Or Arcade games Playstation One And, of course, PSP
Not to mention PSP comes with various other software:
VNC Control Streaming music through RSS Remote Winamp/Foobar/Itunes control Online multiplayer for all PSP games i.e Battle.net Homebrew games, and much more that I don't remember off the top of my head.
So, keep that in mind. :-)

I am probably going to be a little biased as a PSP owner here. I *have* played on a DS and truthfully didn't enjoy it particularly. Most games I've tried make use of the touch screen more as a gimmick than for anything particularly exciting, and the dual screens are only really intelligently used in a handful of games. Plus for all the ones you'll see on the store shelves...the majority are rubbish like quizzes and petting a dog (a la Tamagochi). The battery life is cool on it and the fact it's backward compatible with GBA games however does mean there's a lot of choice.
The PSP IMO is certainly aimed at a slightly older market. The games are much more mature and with more or less the same controls as a playstation (minus dual thumbsticks) they're not simple games by any means. I have some cool games for mine and do enjoy killing time here and there on it, and while on a plane or on holiday. It also doubles as an MP3 player, and with some PC software (available from Sony), you can convert most any movie file into an MP4 for playback on the PSP later. It can also view BMP/JPG photos. The screen is breathtaking and the gfx are generally good to very good.
On top of that you have a web browser plus a bunch of other web-related features (RSS) and stuff, and if you are able to get a custom firmware on it then as others have mentioned, you can run many homebrew apps. That includes emulators as listed above and other cool things like media players (to play any movie format without the need to convert f.ex) or other audio formats (like Ogg Vorbis, etc). They've recently come down in price too, so I'd highly recommend one if you want a protable gaming gadget.
My only criticism is that it's not the most comfortable thing in the world. Playing for any length of time (> 1hr), my left hand in particular would feel a bit sore. The analogue nub should really have been where the D-Pad is as it's the primary control in the majority of games. It also makes the L button a little awkward to access (maybe I have odd hands?) which can be annoying in games where it serves an important function (not many).
I used to be a big gameboy fan but I don't think Nintendo have grown up at all while I have. As much as I can't stand Sony stuff in general (for making everything proprietry) the PSP is cool . Some highly recommended games:
- Lord of the Rings - Tactics (Strategy/Action/RP) - Metal Gear Solid - Portable Ops (Action/Stealth) - Arthur McCleans Mercury (Puzzle - Very addictive!) - FIFA (Sports - Football games are really great...the widescreen aspect means you see a lot more of the pitch, and the controls are lovely. Looks cool too!) - Wipeout (Racing)
You can also get a Dynasty Warriors and the 2nd/3rd Prince of Persia games, though they weren't as much fun on the small screen. -------------

Not only that, but because DS has the wholee stylus thing going on, it is un-emulatable by the PSP. PSP, on the other hand, can be emulated on the DS no probs. --------

I'll basically second those things said by KingsGambit. To me, the PSP is great for its versatility.
I have a PSP and a DS, I got the PSP first. At the time, I was looking into getting an iPod. Instead I got the PSP for the MP3 capability. Over the past couple years, I've upgraded the memory stick a few times and now I'm up to a 4GB (which are rapidly dropping in price). Sure, the memory isn't as big as an iPod but I have over 300 songs and it's just under half full. Point is, I use the PSP as an MP3 player more than anything. In addition to that, there's the picture viewer and the video player. Both are very cool if you load up on those things. And the internet browser is really dang handy. I can check news and email on the go, whenever I find a wi-fi hotspot. And it saved me when my computer died while I was taking an online class. Admittedly, Nintendo did just recently release a browser for the DS but it requires a cartridge, while the PSP has it built-in.
Now, I haven't even mentioned the things the PSP was really designed for... The games are really cool. Many complain of the long loading times but its worth it. After having it over 2 years I'm still amazed at how something so small can look so darned good. People will argue that the DS has better gameplay. I would counter that by saying that's not necessarity the dase. Grantedd, the DS touchscreen makes it very unique. But if you get some PSP games you really like, they can be just as fun, if not more. BTW, if you like puzzle games like Tetris or Dr Mario, I HIGHLY recommend Lumines or Limines II for the PSP. Easily the most addictive puzzle game ever.
And then there are the UMD movies. These are not popular and the manufacturers are already cutting back on how many they make. They used to be spendy and still can be. In fact, they were more expensive than DVDs in the beginning. But prices are dropping and if you can find them on sale or used, they can go for a good price. Again, watching these, I am amazed by the picture quality on that little screen. It truly is amazing.
I'll summarize why you should get a PSP by explaining exactly what I do with it... I keep the memory stick loaded with many MP3s and videos. And I keep the disc drive loaded with a game (usually Lumines II). I take the thing everywhere. I don't have to carry anything with it (well, I guess headphones) and I have an all-in-one music, video, gaming, internet device. The DS just simply does not have the sheer convenience of the PSP.
Oh, and I guess I should add the fact that PSP prices are dropping. I got mine for $250 but I think now they're going for under $200 (I guess prices only matter if you're in the US). And if you live near a Best Buy or Circuit City, watch the weekly sale ads. They often offer a few free accessories and/or games or movies when you buy a PSP. Definitely a good deal compared to what I had to fork out at the time.

Well for someone entering the handheld market id say, go for the most popular one. Just like for someone entering the mmo market, id say, go for WoW.
Not that Ds is like WoW... a Ds is the more fun option believe me, having tried both.. i can tell you, me and my sis both have DS (mine black, hers white) and its the most fun ive had in a long long time, in my opinion if something cant be explained in a short paragraph it is not worth having fyi. -------------------------------------------- Stay away from my signature all of ya!!! Since the DS sells more units in a month than the PSP has ever (an exaggeration, but pretty close the truth) there must be something going for it.
I don't own either, but the DS seems to have more potential than the PSP, even if most of the games don't take advantage of it.
But with the PSP you can watch movies, and that's not something to shake your stick at. I know that where I work I see many PSPs in the break room, and they're not playing games. So it can be very enjoyable, depending on what you do.
So if you have the money, and want to be passively entertained, it's a great option. But if I wanted to buy one, I'd go with the DS, as it has a lot of great options and flexibility.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

How easy is it to get all this running though? I have a DS and i love it, but if it was relatively easy to get all this working on a psp i might consider buying one??

You need:
Internet PSP USB Cable
That's about it.
Has anyone actually tried to play the N64, Playstation One, and PSP games on a Nintendo DS? Wouldn't the lack of a joystick make it play like total garbage? Not to mention that none of the games are designed to use touch screen, or even dual screens on the DS? ------------------------------------ I support the following changes:

Actually, yes. You can.
I wouldn't go into PvP with it, because either you play EvE with a 320x200 resolution(impossible to read anything), or a higher resolution with a scrolling screen. Playing EvE at 1024x768 is sufficient for me, it allows me access to all the basics like market, chat, skills and such, and it's not too difficult to navigate and enter autopilot destinations.
As long as your computer is running at home, you can set up a VNC server and port forward it to your router. With PSPVNC, you can connect to your computer through VNC, anywhere in the world, with a wifi connection. This includes starting up eve, logging in, and playing the game. :-) ------------------------------------ I support the following changes:

You can also use a DS to VNC though (Pointyremote, Wind2DS and DSVNC) and it can be used as a game controller (DS2Key) . Moonshell lets ya play movies and audio, also can view pictures (great for webcomics). You can connect to msn or irc to chat, not sure about other networks yet. There is voice-chat + stylus drawig stuff though. Can run a web server on your DS, not really sure why you'd want to though... The browser isn't great but there's homebrew ones which do NOT require a memory expansion or w/e.

Thats the beautiful part of what he did, he is running a remote desktop on his PSP, not EVE itself. So, while his home system carries all the load of the graphics and CPU time, the PSP is just a control device.
I'm so damn glad I bought PSP, I'd have shot myself if I'd bought a DS after looking at that screenshot.

Edited by: ry ry on 22/06/2007 15:48:34 DS is great, but PSP is the more 'grown up' of the two, it does more and it does the non-games stuff too.
I bought a DS because i only wanted something to play advance wars on the train (i'd given my GBA to a co-worker's kid in a fit of uncharacteristic generosity.) if i wanted 'handheld multimedia station' bollix i'd have definitely gone for the PSP, they're aces.*
