Wow, what a thread. It covers everything. The relation between pvp risk/reward and the producers that want to supply those people (and themselves) with mods, ammo and drones to compete on a near equal level with combat only trained characters.
I fall into the "rounded" character mould, because I didn't have to choose a cookie cutter mould when I created the character.
Most t1 items are a) npc built for below mineral prices, far easier to sell the minerals and see a profit than put more of those items on the market in the first place, where they'll only be bought to be recycled anyway, b) the same modules npc corp built are found in rat loot anyway, eventually ratting in .5 you will find that launcher, ecm, ab or whatever another big reason for not building it in the first place.
I'm getting into the T2 market, but the jump from T1 to T2 is a HUGE HUGE step, one that requires money to start, time to train the skills and of course with Invention LUCK. Eve shouldn't come down to luck, I thought that's what the skills were for, and of course good tactical choices.
As for the big alliances not relying on t1 production. For some it's quite true, in other instance it's easier to transport modules and refine them at the destination than it would be to carry the same amount of minerals you get from recycling.
T2 prices have gone down, that is true. Making them is still a pain in the behind though, as not everyone has access to the supply of the reactions and those kind of things.
Maybe there should be a step between t1 and t2 production that will enable, through price - non npc production/rat drop - people to afford pvp'ng from the get go without having to train up for t2 items, AND having a lower but slightly better set up than the expensive named items that mission runners seed on the market for their own gain often at ridiculous prices.
I play Eve to have fun. Part of that fun is finding out what sells, what doesn't sell, what's on the market and what isn't on the market. Most, if not all t1 items aren't worth even a throwaway look.
Goodness, I can ramble!
