Anyone can pod you anywhere. The only question is does Concord open fire on them or not. Chances are, if they podded you then you were in low sec or 0.0 and they can get away with it there.
After getting pod killed you should show up in a pod wherever you have a clone placed. If you didn't have insurance, you should have a n00b ship with you. If you had insurance, you'll have to buy another ship.
Basically, you get back in your ship and get back at it again.

Pod killing is perfectly legal, and completely normal in PvP combat.
You will find yourself back at a station in a new clone. If you don't know about clones I hope you had less than the 900k skillpoints the clone covers and learn about them quick. If you do know about clones, then what you need to do is buy another one so that if you are pod killed again you don't lose any skillpoints. After that you just buy a new ship and continue on as normal.

Ahhhh, poddings.
Fun .
In highsec it will get the podder killed - in lowsec, it will get them shot on by sentries if at a gate or station. In 0.0 its totally fair, no penalty is applied - in addition, if you're not in 0.0, you'll get a large hit to your security status, so if they continue to do it they'll be an outlaw in little time.
Being at war with a corporation however makes it legal, anywhere.

It's legal. If it was illegal it would be there? There is more to see than the blind eye.

This is not exactly correct.
Insurance will pay you some ISK - 40% of the base value of the ship is automatically paid as 'free' insurance. If you upgraded your insureance the payout will be higher, up to 100% if you took out Platinum insurance and paid the fee.
Getting a new ship, or not, isn't dependent on whether you have insurance or not. It depends on whether you have a ship in the station where your clone is. If you have a ship (any ship) at that station you don't get a new ship, you get to fly whatever you have. If you have no ship at that station, then you get a rookie ship for free.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING though is make sure you upgrade your clone immediately after a pod-kill otherwise you'll lose skills points.

More accurate: Your clone is 'insurance' for your skill points...If you have 6million sp and a clone worth 5million sp you will lose sp. That being said, each clone is good for one podding, be sure to replace your clone after every podding..and remember to upgrade your clone as your skillpoints exceed it's limit.

That isnt entirely true either, or at least not in my experience. I once had a ship in the station, but it wasnt assembled, so I got a rookie ship. So unless they have changed that recently, the only way you DONT get a free ship is if you have an assembled ship in the station.

What purpose does podding serve? Pods can't carry cargo, nor can they fit modules. All it seems to do is annoy whoever it's done to, and force them to buy new implants, upgrade the clone again, and add the podder to the ****list.

You partly answered the question yourself. If you make someone buy new implants it can be quite expensive. If its a corp you are at war with you want to make them waste ISK. Wasting the ISK of a corp you are at war with is good regardless of how much it is. The purchase of a new clone isn't all that expensive relative to you SP total. While its more costly at higher SP, those players usually have a lot more ISK to draw upon so its not a big issue. But if they have a clone on the other side of the galaxy then its that much more time before they are back to bother you.
Also, many pirates ransom players pods if they can lock them before they warp off. (Pods warp quickly too, so you either have to be slow to warp or the attacker has to be fast to catch you.) The threat of losing a pod if you don't pay ransom doesn't mean much if they don't kill pods when the player refuses to pay.
And then there are players who just want the kill, even if it is just a pod. These still get posted and counted as a kill to the player that did the killing.

I can see these points, but I still consider the practice to be dishonorable. Those whom I catch engaged in such activity will be dealt with. Not necessarily immediately, but at some point in the future.

Consider 0.0 Podding is essential when you are defending your sovriengn space. Having ANY red in local is counter to the very idea of sovreignty. Podding sends the invader back to wherever he came from, and is in no way a dishonorable act. Heck in some cases you have friendlies that request podding for faster travel lol

I find most people that say this when they're young (myself included ) usually try out piracy in the future .
Its a part of the game. It serves to annoy the target, maybe make them lose implants or hardwirings, and maybe even SP as well - this isn't a friendly game of checkers, winner takes all here and any advantage you can get over your enemy can be very important.
Plus, corpses are fun to collect .

Sorry for not understanding, but what happens if they kill the pod if no ransom is paid?
Does the player lose everything? inc money?

No if you don't pay they kill you the same way as normal. You keep your wallet. But sometimes you pay but they still kill you. There is nothing special about being killed for not paying a ransom.
