I believe, as others do, that the purpose of lvl 5 missions is similar to that of difficult complexes: a challenge to use your gang at peak efficiency. The most successful warfare, by far, is a result of specific roles being maximized and utilized by a varied and experienced fleet as means to the annihilation of their target. I would opt for this being a prime opportunity to practice such cooperation and specialization with your own crew. Only fools still engage in Napoleonic warfare -- standing still and exchanging fire will not win a major conflict -- advanced tactics and specialization is the Darwinian standard of modern warfare and EVE shouldn't be any different.
Yes, it will be an eternity before these missions are balanced in terms of risk and reward. If you argue that CCP should take action to alter or otherwise skew the inherent laws and mechanics of the EVE universe for your benefit, I would remind you of the long-standing complaints and rumors of CCP doing exactly this but for a major alliance. Please, spare us all the irony of condemning CCP and asking for a repeat performance in the same breath.
As for pirates, this is known as lowsec not because of the Blues playing in-station, but rather for the intentional absence of the "concord shield" that you highsec muffins hide behind. I like to think of pirates as a random, adaptive, and intelligent element for our mutual enjoyment.
If faction standing is your concern, I may have a solution for you. It is slow and tedious, but if your dedication to missions put you in this spot, let dedication get you out of it.
-- The new mission completion option for gang distribution will equally divide and distribute pay, LP, and standing increase. I have yet to specifically test this in regards to a storyline mission, however, I am successfully raising a industrial friend's standings who has never accepted a single lvl 1 mission. In this case, it may be necessary to travel in your pod to the hostile agents and use a buddy to share standing increase. If you dismiss this method as laborious and tedious, feel free to become a miner instead.
