Hi all,
I got into this game with the intention of PvP'ing, and have 'done my time' doing missions and learning the ropes. I've just bought my first Cruiser, and would like to start going out of the Empire. Three questions really
1) How to know when I'm ready, going out and getting whooped coz my ship isn't upto a realistic level to survive is just pointless.
2) how do I check a potential target to see if I can 'take him' to avoid picking on someone who will just laugh and kill me in 1 shot....
3) lastly is about Elec Warfare, as thats not a real issue with PvC gaming. Do I need to learn the skills and get Warp protection / Webbing etc before I start or can a shield or Armour tanked ship survive with Brute force ???
many thanks for any answers

Well, you go out to PvP when you feel like doing it. I suggest going out in frigates at first. You are very likely to die in your first few PvP engagements, and you probably wouldn't want to lose your first cruiser.
Assuming you do fly a frigate, the only EW you are going to be looking at is a Warp Disruptor/Scrambler, and possible a Stasis Webifier, depending on how many med slots you have. You are also going to almost certainly want a Micro Warp Drive.
You won't be able to realistically judge the "toughness" of your opponent through ingame means. That comes with experience of fighting. You can do the basics of looking to see the characters age, and what ship they are in. After that, it's up to you to decide using your knowledge of your ship and your experience (which will come later of course) about what you can take. This is based off what you have killed in the past, and what has killed you.

Find some people to fly with, and fly in frigates to begin with. There's all sorts of stuff like agression timer mechanics and choosing targets that really needs to be learnt from experience.

I can fly BS's and I still fly T1 frigs in PvP. Why? Because I'm kinda poor right now, and I don't feel like taking losses for anything larger.! hehe
so Tristin = 1 Mill after modules. Its not that bad, so I have a few of em.
PvP is best in small gang when your new, learn the ropes and so on so forth. EXPECT to die.
Also, if your not on L3 missions, your probably not ready money wise to head down to 0.0 or low sec pvp. ESPECIALLY since you jsut got your first cruiser.
The best way to explain pvp: Don't fly anything your not willing to loose in less than 15 seconds. :)

I'm a new player too (6 days left on trial) and I went out trying to PvP for the first time the other day. Made my way out to a 0.3 space with my Rifter with 3 125mm guns and a missile launcher, a small armor rep, webifier, small shield regen... and that's about it. I knew I was going to die, but I wasn't going to go through the trial without at least TRYING.
So I scanned the first asteroid belt, nothing but some NPC rats that looked too tough. Off to the second belt. "Ohhh, looky here. Hmm, well, I've never seen that kind of ship before, let me look at it's description and figure out what it is..." Next thing I know this battlecruiser is right on top of me. He popped me, but it took a while. I wasn't able to get his shields below 90% though.
Anyway, now it's a few days later and I've figured out a lot about the proper setup, so I'm going to go out and try again tonight. Will I get popped or even podded? Probably, but I'm not going to make it easy for them. You'll never know unless you try.

If you want to get into PvP then you should check out www.agony-unleashed.com . We run PvP classes which revolve around the use of tactics and strategy rather than brute firepower and skillpoints. Our Basic class teaches the fundamentals of PvP and focuses on the use of T1 frigates and electronic warfare, followed by real 0.0 PvP under the tutelage of experienced Agony gang leaders and scouts. It's a helluva lot of fun, you learn a lot, and you don't need to spend weeks training skills and grinding missions to do it. We firmly believe that you don't need millions of skillpoints and full T2 equipment to PvP and we share our techniques with others. Take a look around our website and feel free to ask any questions either on our forums or in our ingame channel, AU_PVP_UNIVERSITY.

Yeah, I checked out Agony Unleashed's website a couple of days ago. It looks really nice. I unfortunately can't devote 6+ hours to a class in an online game (at least my wife wouldn't let me ). If she would though, I'd be all over it. Maybe if they were to allow apprenticeships...

You don't need to dedicate 6 hours to a class. It's completely ok to come along for the instructional bit one class, and then come to the live gang part of another. We mix up the starting times on classes (usually 1800 and 0000), so you should hopefully be able to make it work in installments.

Oh, very cool! I had just read in the class announcements that it required "6-8 hours" and thought it had to be one stretch. Very very cool indeed. I guess it's just a matter of working up some more ISK then. Thank you!

no problem, we realize that 6-8 hours is a stretch, and often insane. Lots of times we switch off instructors/gang leads ourselves, so that people don't need to dedicate such a huge amount of time to running a class.

Thanks for the advise all, and will do some Frig shopping as it would make me very sad to have my Cruiser exploded in 15 seconds !! Ill also check out the Uni, though my girlfriend would string me up for an 8hour stretch !!

So get her a trial key! You'll want a second computer first though or you'll be doing some offline PvP about computer time! |

You might want to check our competitor, EVE University. You have to join their corp to do their classes, but I've heard good things about them. (There's also a maximum character age, I believe.)
