I've always loved science fiction/science fantasy, especially the kind set in a libertarian dystopia as EVE is. |

EVE is a little tweeting bird chirping in a meadow. EVE is a wreath of pretty flowers which smell bad.
The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the ho's and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!' and I'll look down, and whisper 'no.' |

Total waste of a hard on! I would much rather get together with a couple friends at the local pub, have a couple pints, talk with them and maybe some other people that we haven't met yet, shoot some pool, watch the local NHL team lose yet another game and make fun of the hardcore fans. I have always been fascinated with meeting new people. Most of the time, it's a lot of fun as long as there is mutual respect.
As for EVE, it is just another form of entertainment, a game I can play, when I feel like it. |

That's right I'm a Han Solo or whatever that blaster slinging smuggler was named.
I'm an Elite vet a Frontier Vet and remember taking turns at Frontier on an Amiga 500 which was just the best machine back in the day and thinking how COOL would it be to have many players bouncing around trading and fighting. (CCP can we get Imperial traders and Couriers please :))
So to summarise what I am hearing.
1: Eve is escapism. 2: Eve is cheap. 3: It has a harsh beauty. 4: It is played for fun.
So fun so far fun seems less important than more comfortable escapism. On that note I like how in eve my character proceeds without me needing to be there to mine experience. I like that in Eve Experience is something I personally gain while my toon studies hard at physics, geology and thermodynamics.
According to the list so far I don't see any reason why people should curse 'space barbies!' with such vitriol. I did notice that I couldn't give my toon a paunch he is ripped to perfection maybe that's the genetic engineering?
Why does discussing WIS cause people to talk about what EVE is more that discussing what EVE is?

More opportunities for mindless trolling and bitching. Constructive/friendly discussion is boring. |

Eve is at the moment the best multiplayer SciFi game around that does not constantly hit me with the "Pay-to-win"-hammer. I had nearly two years of inactivity, and why there are some new things around (hey, I have a body now! and planet stuff), I see Eve mainly as when I left: a big potential to be the best game ever, and if CCP would finally realise that their theme of "cold, harsh universe" is a relic of the early age of MMOGs, it would be able to reach that potential.
Also, the community radiates the morbid fascination of an autobahn accident involving three Polish trucks that should have never been allowed on the road, a bus full of school children and a pensioner group on their way for tea and cakes: it's horrible, it's disgusting, it shows you which kind of people should be hung from the next lamp pole, but you just can't look away. |

My concerns are not with WiS itself, but with the fact that implementing its backend (for large numbers of avatars - say 200+) is going to be a big technical challenge. So far the only MMO that's ever succeeded is DAoC (I've heard something about 3000+ avatar combats), and my personal experience with reverse engineering the SL protocols make me wonder even more how they did it.
There are some things on the horizon that I'm watching that may mitigate this soon (such as this), so I still have some optimism.
I may have come here from Myst Online, but that does not make me any less bloodthirsty than the average Eve player.
Just more subtle.

Asuka Solo wrote:To me, Eve is the new Freelancer.
Right now, its mostly just space freelancer with sexy ships and pretty lights.
But I hope that someday, I could land on some city with my big ass capital ships and go for a walkabout around that city, leaving my ship(s) in some star port until I feel like using it again, meet new people and find interesting ways to kill them or rip them off.
And after a long days work, I could head on over to the nearest gentlemen establishment and put my feet up while watching scantly clad ladies dance my troubles away on bar counters and poles over a nice cold brewskie.
That last bit is moderately ironic.
As for me, I feel that EVE is an experience; one that I am not always happy with, and often at odds with. It's more than a multi-player environment, but less than a community; a place which sits in some genre resembling pulp fiction, and often fails to impress.
I stopped playing EVE not because my computer crashed and burned; but rather because of the seeming lack of value in it's multi-player environment some time before. EVE is like watered down coffee these days; in that you join for a multi=player experience and get less than what you were expecting.
Players are downright anti-social in many cases, often beligerent and narcisistic, and generally hunch down in little groups fending off the dark with what little fire they have. Not exactly an environment that breeds trust and makes for easy friendships.
Spending a week on these forums after 3 months absense, has made me feel that I'm not entirely interested in coming back. I haven't even stepped foot in the game yet, (having only started picking up parts for repairing and rebuilding my PC), and the attitude of many of these players here, has made me wholy uninterested in reinvesting my time in that gameworld.
So-to me-EVE is really just a questionable use of my time now; when I could most likely be more effectively investing it in something else that will make me happier.
Strangely, I still want to try. |
