Edited by: Ritorix on 25/06/2007 18:19:16 Week-old player here. Yesterday I took my kestrel out to 0.4 to kill some rats; found it very profitable and worth doing. I fully expected death at any moment, and it eventually came in the form of a year-old player in an interceptor. I was warp-scrambled and couldnt escape, between NPC and PC damage I was down quickly.
I got my first Caracal and dont want to lose it like that. So...
1) What level of warp scrambler do gankers usually stack? (Does it stack?) Just 1, 2, more?
2) Is it viable to use the anti-warp scramblers (name escapes me) to allow myself an escape route? How many should I equip?
3) If I use them, how should I mitigate the halved targeting range for PvE? Since I'm in a Caracal, would using FoF missiles compensate for lack of targeting range? I dont intend to return PvP fire, and I usually equip 4x assault launchers and a salvager.
4) Are there any other ECM that I need to worry about, when I'm only concerned with warping away?
Or I am doomed?
Thanks :)

If you are looking to rat in low sec, and aren't in a corp or alliance, try to find an unpopulated sector. There are plenty of them where you can go and be there for a long time and never see another soul.
Keep the local chat window open and in the foreground and when a new name appears in the window, warp away to a safespot IMMEDIATELY. Then keep warping between planets until the unknown person goes away. You can leave your drones behind and pick them back up later, just last night someone in our alliance chat lost a Battleship to a pirate cause they were scooping drones when they should have been running.
The problem is that it is hard to fit low end ships so that they will be useful in both PVP and PVE, you usually have to go for one or the other. Warp Stabilizers might let you escape a pirate in a similar sized ship as yours, but it's a dead slot when you are fighting belt rats.
There is no shame in running.

You can normaly count on 2 points, more if you are up against a gang. You might get lucky and he will only hit you for 1.

It is not viable unless you are fitting just to run and not to fight. Each warp core stab that you fit will reduce your target range by half and double the time it takes to lock onto a target.

As mentioned it is probably not worth while. But you could try Sensor Boosters to increase your targeting range. But you will likely get better results by fitting a Nanofiber Structure or Inertia Stab to decrease the amount of time it takes to get into warp.
Originally by: Ritorix 4) Are there any other ECM that I need to worry about, when I'm only concerned with warping away?
If your just trying to run then, no. If you venture into 0.0 you will need to worry about Interdictor Spheres and Mobile Warp Distrutors. These prevent all warp outs within their range. No amount a warp corp stabs will help you.
You might want to think about fitting ECM (Jamming or Dampening) of your own. If you can break their lock on you, their warp scramble will also fail. However, if you do activate an ECM module you will not be able dock or activate a stargate for 1 minute.

Not really. Even if you continue to die, there is nothing wrong. As long as you make more than you lose you are coming out ahead. A cruiser might not be better than a frigate, if you expect to lose it often.

As someone said, watch local and warp to your safespot/station of choice and wait them out. Most people are just warping through, and will be gone in a matter of minutes. If they linger, they are usually pirates looking for targets.
Don't respond to them in chat, ignore invites and wait for them to get bored. They have the attention span of 3 y/o children.

Unlike the troll-like creature posting above my pirate-based attention span is such that I'll even respond to your post
General Comment: Caracal-I'm sure it's a nice ratter...but there is a reason they are amoung the top 3 ships destroyed. Usually no web, slow, and considered an easy target.
Specific Answers:
1-You will find anywhere from 1-3 scram points per pirate.
2-You are free to gimp your combat ship with stabs. The long lock time and reduced targeting range will have you chasing rats into the rocks where you can get nicely stuck. Not good.
3-See comment 2.
4-If all you plan on doing is running...other EW will not be a factor.
Unsolicited comment:
You might be advised that logging off will save you. It won't. If you get scrammed or aggro'd in any way your ship will sit there doing nothing for a minute before emergency warp which is plenty of time to drop a Caracal (and most other ships). As an added bonus should you manage to emergency warp away with ship intact...it sits in space awaiting probing and eventual destruction. Don't do it-better to either run or accept the ransom convo a proper pirate will send you .
You are not doomed. Be smart, paranoid, and remember losec is dangerous.

Basicly yeah, you should also align for warpout as soon as you are in position.
But why would you solo mine in low sec???

Consider fitting a cloak instead. You need to activate it before you are locked though. So as so as you see a known pirate in local or someone warps into your belt just hit the cloak and wait for them to leave.

My advice would be to become a pirate and join a pirate corp it is way more profitable that ratting and it is the best way to learn how to PVP.

Bad move especially if he is spotted cloaking. He cannot warp....speed is zilch, and he will get decloaked pretty quick

Edited by: Ritorix on 26/06/2007 12:47:19 Thanks for the advice. Sounds like I just need to avoid the situation, or if combat is joined, fight or die.

Sounding like a good idea.

I've heard that the State War Academy runs classes in their corp channel. Or did for a while, or something. EVE University also teaches PVP. I've heard some good things about a corp called Agony Unleashed and their 'PVP BASIC' class, too

Originally by: Vladimir Ilych Consider fitting a cloak instead. You need to activate it before you are locked though. So as so as you see a known pirate in local or someone warps into your belt just hit the cloak and wait for them to leave.
The only advantage a cloak would offer is that once he's in a safespot he could cloak and not move. Safespot hopping, or other warp-around tactics are just about as effective and won't take a module. The Cloak will also drop his lock-on time substantially, and quite likely gimp his ratting setup due to its relatively high CPU requirement.
In addition, and this one is important, you cannot cloak if anything has you locked. So if he's caught in a belt, if there are any rats locking him the Mr. Cloak will be no-worky. So it offers very little by way of advantage on a ratting ship.
Your best defense agains pirate gankers is sitting on top of your neck (presumeably, it could be in a tank I suppose). Use the tools provided and they're going to have a hella hard time finding you! The Map will let you know which systems are relatively unpopulated, and if there's been killin' there in the last hour or last day. Find a point that's far distant and set the autopilot to it, this shows you which is the main 'travel route' through that particular batch of lowsec. Know which systems are 'choke-points' on various routes and be extra cautious when going through them.
The systems immediatly outside hisec space (first jump into lowsec) are prime pirate hunting grounds. There's one system, just outside a nice hisec missionrunners grounds that I've seen camped at least a hundred times over the past couple of years. By adding one extra jump, going through a system that's connected to both the hisec and lowsec system, allows you to avoid the pirates almost every single time. In fact, I've never been hit by the gatecamps there becuase I automatically enter the system through via non-autopilot route. Just the other day I watched as a Drake was beaten down by a dozen or so pirates just because he didn't mind his autopilot and map.
