I've been playing around with fitting lights (150mm T2) vs. mediums (200mm T2), and I've run into something interesting.
With the mediums, hitting anything small is nearly impossible - same skill levels, but due to radius and transverse velocity, the guns miss nine out of ten shots.
With the lights, same target, same range, the hits are 99%.
On larger slower targets, the damage is not significantly different in terms of DPS (150 dps vs. 160 dps).
So - other than additional range (which to me isn't significant - I'm getting 44 km with the smalls), what am I getting out of the mediums that I can't get out of the lights? And if I'm in a ship that isn't fast, the smaller ships are going to set the range (probably closer in, to scramble, etc - still inside the range of the small rails).
Is bigger not necessarily better? ------------------

Bigger was never necessarily better in EVE. Or at least, it hasn't been for a very long time. Medium railguns have their place on some ships. Sometimes you want the extra range, or your ship has a damage bonus to medium guns and you want to fit them. And isn't the largest medium railgun the 250mm? Maybe you should try comparing those two, if your going to be fitting rails you probably want the biggest ones.

This is not an oddity, its a must, larger guns have lesser tracking. Do have a look at the Player guide and its tracking guide, preferably throw an eye on the missile guide aswell, just to catch a grip about it and teach the next mate who comes along.
Damage will be greater with greater guns - if you hit. Especially as you get a damage bonus to larger guns on larger ships. But you can do very very well specializing in small ships.

It depends on your ship bonuses, but yes, railgun tracking sucks. The larger ones do have more range for the same ammo type. Small rails nonetheless work very well on lots of setups where medium guns don't fit.

Edited by: mr h4ppy on 26/06/2007 13:26:19 cant you add things to increase your tracking speed, so if you use a ship with 10% damage bonus per level to medium hybrids, and a tracking enhancer then you hit just as well as the small guns with a longer range and dealmore damage. You would of course need to specialise a bit, but the extra damage would be worth it.
Saying that, an ares and taranis work amazingly well with small rails.

Comapre 125mm to 200m or 150mm to 250mm. (for damage)
As for tracking or whatever. Also, make sure the ammo your using is the same. IE Spike/Javlin

You're never going to hit a small target with large rails no matter how many tracking enhancers/computers you fit....unless the target is a complete moron of course...
If you do hit it, you do minimal damage. Won't even notice it,

oh i'd like to note this isn't a trait that is exclusive to rails, as an amarr pilot since most of my ships don't have a dmg bounse anyways I often down size to small beams on cruisers cause the dmg shift is negligable.
Then again I usually just use projectiles for other reasons which are well known and would risk derailing this post (no pun intended).
