What happened was that *chan memes became more mainstream.
It happened somewhere between the proliferation of lolcat images and Rickrolling.

Edited by: Crumplecorn on 26/06/2007 22:27:27 I like a cesspool as much as the next guy, it's the overflow that bothers me. It's so sudden. Before I left there was none of this. When I got back I saw it once, and thought it was a once off. And then again. And again. There are cats in signatures FFS. How did this all happen so suddenly?
--nvm--
I've always hated rulefaggotry, but seeing such frequent use of these memes outside *chan is frankly embarrassing. You always hear that this is going to happen, but I've never seen it to such an extent before. 'Lolcats' are a great example. -

Its because it spread of its own accord.
Lolcats are now used far and wide beyond *chan, and have their own sites dedicated to them.
Hell, lolcats are bigger on Flickr and ICanHazCheezburger than they are on *chans themselves.
The biggest example is Rickrolling, where Family Guy intentionally rickrolled on live television just weeks after the fad began.
Its not because of Rule 1/2 violations; its because they spread to sites that don't have Rules 1 and 2.

However, other memes are now being dragged out. Lolcats are ok because even calling them lolcats gives away where you heard of them or which 'breed' (lol, pun) of the meme you are referring to. But then you start seeing other memes being used here and there, and they are used verbatim, but I can't help but get the sense that the people using them don't know their, like, etymology, or whatever. They're just finding the source of 'lolcats', and bringing back other stuff with them. Which means the nigh-legendary influx of gaiafags is actually happening.
But I'm just rambling now... -

Nah, most people using other memes actually know how to use them.

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 27/06/2007 02:22:17 Bam to behold, a public bulletin board, built of both brilliance and barbarity by bastards with boners. This bastion, no mere bulwark of boredom, is a brutal barrage of blistering bull, barely benevolent... but behind the bigotry and boobs, beyond the bitter broadcasts of bragging buffoons: here be the body politic. A brotherhood of blasphemy, blessed with more balls than brains, battling the bland, the bogus, the benign. Bedlam? Bring it on. But I babble... better to be brief.
You may call me /b/.

If you've been rickrolled then it means you've inadvertently clicked on a link (thinking it was something else) that leads to a video of Rick Astley's "Never gonna give you up" (usually on YouTube). It's like being goatsed except not as shocking.

It's just a joke. I'm guessing it started on 4Chan, or became popular through 4Chan. 4Chan is usually the origin of all things evil on the net, or has a heavy hand in spreading that evil and making it popular. It's a subculture, and eventually all subcultures spread (or die), and thus (if they spread)they become decadent and again, die. It's just human nature.

I keep wondering whether 4chan is just a front for the SomethingAwful.com forums

It actually didn't start on /b/ on 4chan (the actual "cesspool"); it started on /v/, the video games forum, because of someone who was sick of all the GTA4 hype. He posted a link to a "GTA4 gameplay video" that was actually a link to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up." And everyone who was obsessing over GTA4 suddenly broke free of their curse, laughed, and started rickrolling people.
