Being an old git, I get annoyed by new youth slang, as I haven't got the faintest clue what they are on about, and most of the time it sounds ridiculous to me.
Two recent examples:
From my young nephew upon getting a present: "That's Boss, that is." From my brother's kid, about a TV show: "That's Book"
I didn't have the faintest idea about #2, but apparently it comes from predictive texting as it comes up first when you type "cool" and people couldn't be arsed to change it, so the new "cool" is "book"!
Any more to make my blood pressure go even higher?

People who say "Sigh" instead of actually sighing. The word "innit" (isn't it). I can probably handle most other stuff.
Noone really says "LOL"...do they? Seriously? -------------

Hearing "innit" and "imma" (I'm going to) make me want to hurt people. I once chatted to this girl online and she kept typing "woteva" in her replies and that really bugged me. It shows a complete lack of vocabulary and is an indication of the failure of our schools to educate young people rather than allowing popular culture to be the teacher.

Here's another example. A web tribute site for a kid who was stabbed to death in London last weekend.
For christ's sake, wouldn't it show more respect not to type "tributes" in some sort of half assed pidgin English?

Yeah but those of us who have been online long enough to remember thinking thoughts of lust over 14400 bps modems will know that 1337 started well before the current trends of txtspk. r0XX0r
Also, I swear I remember Joanie Cunningham saying 'That's boss' on happy days (or to be even more geeky, the little cousin girl who rides with Miller in the coupe also says 'That's boss' in American Graphitti).

Edited by: Micheal Dietrich on 29/06/2007 16:43:08 Yes there was a time I was hanging with a friend at a Denny's and we were killin time talking and stuff then out of no where he says LOL. Brief pause. Then I was like 'Did you seriously just say LOL?' and he's all like 'yeah'. Then I asked him why he just couldn't laugh like a normal person. And he did.
But I noticed the trend is picking up

LOL actually is dutch for "fun" or "joy" or "funny" so for me its second nature to just say LOL instead of L.O.L.

I confess to buying a 2400 modem (with MNP5 compression nonetheless!) in 1988 for my Amiga 500.
It cost me over a MONTH'S take home salary!
The Amiga was a dog's test1cles expanded one, with 1.5Mb RAM, 20Mb SCSI1 hard drive. (Yup, 20 Megabytes) .. and, wait for it, a real time battery backed up clock!

I can almost see why some people started using a form of shorthand, so called 'leetspeak', but in this day and age the restrictions that forced you to abbreviate words are gone.
The only people (imho) who have the right to use this digital shorthand are those who struggled with early modems.
Personally the first modem I owned was the VTX5000 and used 'The Gnome at Home' BBS amongst others.
Now I have a spell chucker and other aids to proper communication and try to avoid cryptic abbreviations, even when using SMS I still prefer to type the full words.

Absolutely - very annoying the way groups of people adadpt language to meet the need for some kind of group identity. After all, you wouldn't catch any of us doing anything remotely similar while flying a 'poc through lo-sec and smacking local. roflmao

I agree. But 'jargon' is another animal entirely. In my current job, phrases like 'The accel on that axis can't be tuned using auto-params, you still need to use a shunt for the regenerative energy' or 'The dual-channel cross-monitored estop circuit with manual reset will cause the reservoir caps in the inverters to overheat without using a timed pnoz relay.'
Not too hard to understand, but that is jargon associated with a particular area, whereas the 'yoof speak' is exactly that, a way of annoying us older folks while at the same time reinforcing the youths peer group. Much as I did in the distant past, 'Straights, breeds, filth, bananas' etc.
(Translation of above, Normal people, hippies, police officers, other motorcycle patch-club members).
Despite the fact the youth will always adapt language to suit their own purposes, as has happened always, it dosen't alter the fact it annoys the hell out of me.

One of my previous jobs before joining CCP was teaching at a university in the UK. I had to have a gentle chat with my students about how using textspeak and colloquialisms such as "innit" in written coursework submissions was a big no-no. These were the same students who defended their plagiarism with "Ma A-level English teacher said it wuz ok cuz it's still research." I still fear for the future of humanity...

I say LOL in real life. It works well as sarcasm. -
