Caldari are good in gang, but u need to realize thatother race small ships are a bit better, except the crow. So if u want to go with cruiser, bc, command, hac etc u need count that most peoles using gallente which are armor tankers. A gang can be very good if they remote rep each other and if u go with shield tanked ship in an armor tanked gang.... http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/9741/rinaldo2ir8.jpg |

Caldari can solo, but it requires some odd set-ups and certainly isn't as easy as Minnie or Gallente. But Caldari are excellent for gang support - you'll have lots of midslots for ewar, powerful ECM boats, and you'll be good in the antisupport role, like using a Hawk as an inty-swatter, or a Drake/Caracal with Assault Launchers for clearing off enemy tacklers.
It depends on your style of play. If you just want to fly solo and hit F1-F8, fly Gallente. If you want to do that whilst flying really fast and having to use pilotting skills, go Minnie. If you want to support your gang, train Caldari.
Generalisations, obviously. I don't know much about Amarr so I haven't commented on them.

If you're talking about your avatar, then heck yeah, BE a Caldari. A Caldari Achura (Monk or Stargazer), preferably Engineer career choice
If you're talking about ships to fly... well, there... the plot thickens. And you got a few answers there what racial skills to pick. But still, the avatar, keep it Caldari.

Reasons to fly Caldari:
* You like missiles * You like shield tanking * You like PvE (specifically missions and mining) * You like ECM (jammers) * You like gang PvP
Reasons NOT to fly Caldari:
* You like fast/agile ships * You like guns * You like armor tanking * You like drones * You like solo PvP
Obviously the above lists are not mutually exclusive so if you like them all there is only one race for you -> MINMAYARRR!

If you want to ever kill any non-NPCs then don't go with caldari, I made that mistake and I am regretting it everytime I log on. Caldari PvP is synonymous with "suck".

If I were going to make a solid PVP character it would be Min. As I do some PvE and industry I'm happy being Gal and just cussing at my drones a lot.

My Char is now a bit over 3 years old and after 2 years i cross trained gallente and i never regret it, here are the reasons why:
* actually i know how it is to do Solo-PvP and kill something rather fast now (you are able to kill with caldari solo, but only with some ships and then it takes it's time)
* you want to use your primary weapon system without wasting your damage bonus (kinetic dmg bonus for missiles) and still be able to choose damage type ? then use drones!
* you want a buffer that regenerates after every fight u had aka Shields ? then go armortank
* you want to be able to tackel someone and you want to be fast at the same time and cap injection and still have a tank ? then go armortank!

if you measure pvp effectivness by ship killing speed then no
if you measure pvp effectivness by gang assistance abilities then yes

The above list is OK with the exclusion of the "don't fly caldari if you don't like guns" part. Caldari have exactly as many gunboats as they have missileboats. In fact the Caldari range bonus to their gunships is exactly what you need to bring the long range guns with maximum damage ammo at typical gang ranges (20-50km)
