I've been looking around at the fitting threads and I have a couple clarification questions regarding how to fit my ship. For now, I plan on keeping this ship PVE, I'll probably join a corp soon, but I'm not sure I want to lose my first big ship quite yet :).
First off, the boni on the Caracle state "5% increase to KE missile damage per skill level and 10% Flight time per skill level". What does "per skill level" mean. Does it refer to my Cruiser skill? My missile launcher opporation skill (or bombardment)? Are these boni additive or multiplicable? Is it 1+5x10% = 1.50 modifier or is it 1.10^5 = 1.61 modifier? (If someone has an FAQ on understanding % boni, let me know, I'm pretty confused abuot the whole issue).
Next is the issue of heavy assault vs regular heavy missile launchers. As I understand it, assault = higher ROF, shorter range. Are assault missiles more accurate against small ships? Will heavy missiles have problems hitting frigs and other smaller fast ships that I would encounter? As long as I stay far away from smaller ships will I be fine?
Thanks for heling a n00b out :)

Edited by: Andeir on 28/06/2007 15:56:10 -Yes, "per skill level" indicates that it is per level you've fully trained of Caldari Cruiser.
-It is a straight bonus. So trained for level 4, gives a 1.4 multiplier to your damage.
-For checking the 'accuracy' of missiles against smaller targets, there is a balance between the missiles speed, explosion velocity, and the targets signature radius & velocity. There is an official missile guide somewhere on the eve website.
-Heavy missiles, with good skills, can do fairly well against smaller ships. You may have issues hitting interceptors though without excellent skills. Tech2 missile launchers allow using T2 ammunition, and the Precision heavy missiles do wonders against those little buggers.
-Caracal does well at longer ranges, as does it big brother the Cerberus, so be sure to train your long range targeting skill (in the Electronics skill section).
Hope that helps.

The bonus is based on the level of cruiser skill you have, so cruiser level 4 is a 20% bonus to damage.
As for the missiles, if you are doing missions, I would suggest regular heavies or lights depending on the rats you are going against. If you are only fighting frigates, use lights, got a mix of cruisers and frigs, use heavies or a mix of the two.
Heavy assault are like big rockets, you will have very short range and with the caracal's paper thin tank, getting up close to fight isn't the best idea. |

So when you say use lights, should I just use light missiles in my heavy launchers, or should I have a second fitting set for small launchers?

The only problem with the Caracal is that if you train any skills for missiles like Bombardment or projection, you quickly get to the point where you can fire further than you can see...even with Long-Range Targeting at 5. Here's the fit I use all the time (unless I KNOW I'm only going to be fighting frigs)
5x heavy missile launcher (use what you like in the tubes...I use Scourge)
1x Large Shield Extender II 1x Medium Shield Booster II 1x Magnetic Scattering Amplifier II 1x V-M15 Braced Multispectral Shield Matrix 1x Alumel-Wired I Sensor Augmentation
1x BCU II 1x DCU
With LRT at 4, I can only "see" about 72K or so, but with the booster, it's 110 or so, and I can kill anything at 90K (I've only got projection and bombardment to 3 each)

The Setup I came up with (thanks Quickfit!)
High: 5x Arbalest Heavy Missile Launcher (or reg if they're too expensive) --OR-- 3x Arbalest Heavy + 2x Arbalest Assault Heavy Missile Launchers
Mid: 1x 10MN AB 1x Med Shield Booster 2x Med Shield Ext 1x Sensor Booster
Low: 1x PDS 1x BCS
What do you guys think, which high setup is best for doing PVE quests?

That's not TOO bad, but you're not playing to the Caracal's main strength for such a cheap ship: Range. I'd get rid of the to HAM launchers. They take up too much grid and CPU that could be used for something else.
Also...be careful with the word "quest" here. This isn't WoW or EQ or AC, or...well, it's EVE, and people can get mighty touchy about the differences between the two.

Well...as I calculate it I don't have a lot of range available to me. I have a bombardment skill of II and I'll have a cruiser skill of II which will net me +40% range. (3750m/s)(10s)(1.4) = 52.5km. That's not really that much. Is there some other way I can maximize my range?

You might not able to do all the elf quests. This ship is best against undeads. :D

You can also increase the speed of your missiles with the Missile Projection skill (10% per level). So while bombardment increases their flight time, projections increases their speed. Getting both to 4 is highly recommended, as are all the other missile skills for the most part.

Oops, sorry about the nomenclature...didn't know people were going to jump down my throat about it . I'm new to MMO's in general (this is my 2nd), so I'm not completely down on what everything is called yet.

Let me try to clarify my comment about light missiles. If you shoot at a frigate with a heavy missile, a portion of it's damage won't apply because it's explosive radius is larger than that of the frigate. Using a light missile in the same situation, it will hit for full damage as it's explosive radius is small like the frigates. So if you are fighting mainly frigates, you will have better efficiency with light missiles than with heavies all things being equal.
You have to use a launcher that is sized for lights, either a standard launcher or a assault launcher.
As others have stated, you will find range is one of the caracals greatest strengths, so any use of heavy assault missiles will void that advantage.

I was under the impression that the Caracal got the bonus to missile range wholesale - and that this would include HAM's? And long range ham's = sexeh!

Long range hams are 17-18k range, hardly sexeh when you are fighting in a paper bag. Honestly, the extra damage of hams over heavy missiles will quickly be voided as you pop because you are in range of your targets weapons.
