[ 2004.01.19 23:49:43 ] Darrin Tobruk > hello [ 2004.01.19 23:50:02 ] jono nomac > hi i can buy the dom if u can bring it to ryddinjorn [ 2004.01.19 23:50:59 ] Darrin Tobruk > that is not a problem. it's 6 jumps :) [ 2004.01.19 23:51:16 ] jono nomac > cool [ 2004.01.19 23:59:01 ] Darrin Tobruk > ok, omw [ 2004.01.20 00:13:51 ] Darrin Tobruk > which station are you at? [ 2004.01.20 00:14:03 ] jono nomac > theres only one [ 2004.01.20 00:14:04 ] Darrin Tobruk > nm [ 2004.01.20 00:14:06 ] jono nomac > brb
But of course, he never came back. I waited almost 30 minutes for him to log back on or contact me with a main, but no luck.
About 20 minutes into the wait, another guy jumps into the system asking for him, to sell him a Vexor. We talked for a bit, but finally both of us got bored and left the system.
The Dom is now on sale in Pator, and I don't think I'll be trading with alts in the future.
Some people really need to get a life

Yeah man, I've had that happen. I've even had alts ask me to meet them someplace, and when I get there, to my surprise, they're campin' the gate anticipating me.
Slick huh?
Now I don't meet people. If you wanna buy it, come to my store biatches.

Edited by: Darrin Tobruk on 20/01/2004 01:59:13 I never go to a system lower than 0.5 to trade with someone for that very reason.
I think I'll adopt your trading practise

It's the buyer's responsibility to go where the goods are, basically. Or at least, it should be. As for Darrin; if he got two of you to fly out to the depths of nowhere under false pretences, I'd say petition him for harassment. Making other players waste their time is not what CCP want to see people doing.
If he's fetched you out there to kill you, that's a different matter but if he's done it for the sole purpose of making you fly there and back again, he should be petitioned.

Do alts serve useful purposes? Sure.
1) Alts are great for hauling, refining, or other jobs that only require a few days of skill training. People with 2 computers (or 2 games running at once on 1) often use an alt in a Bestower or other easy-to-learn indy to haul while they mine.
2) Agent missions. Make a social-based alt, take a few days to train him up in Connections and Negotiation, and let HIM do the agent jobs while your main is off in Stain, Curse, or wherever... (also great for people who use 2 games at a time) Or just have THREE characters doing research instead of one to increase your odds...
3) Fun. There are various frigate combat leagues, goofy theme corps, and so on that are made primarily for alts.
4) Scouting. Want to know prices in a distant region? Leave an alt there so you can check. Need to know if Biomass is camping a particular system? Send in Mr. Expendable to check. Some people may consider these cheesy tactics, but the fact is that they work...
4) Want to fly a fast frigate or two out to your favorite 0.0 hunting ground and leave them at a hidden bookmark just in case you wind up in a pod? Send an alt on autopilot while you're AFK. If he dies so what? You lose a 50k frigate and a couple stock modules. If not, park the ship, eject, and destruct your pod to jump back to the station and pick up another frigate...
I'm sure there are more valid reasons too. Alts may be used by scammers, but they're used by NON-scammers more...

Alts are good for various tactics, but scammers should be petitioned and banned.
What I did with my alt in the past was scout every system for free offices and rent them, while my main char could do mining operations in the mean time.

This guy jono nomac did the exact same thing to me yesterday with a Tempest. But I had hired a corpmate to deliver it for me. By the time my corpmate got to my station, jono was long gone. So the Tempest didn't move.

This guy, jono, did the same thing to me yesterday with a Tempest. I'd hired a corpmate to transport it for me, and by the time my corpmate got to my system to pick it up, jono was long gone. So the Tempest didn't move. Really annoying though, my corpmate stopped what he was doing, and travelled 10 jumps for nothing.

Yes, they 'can' be useful. I have an alt (Crew CEO) who needed no training and was able to be a CEO right from creation. He is CEO, while I can join other corps if I want. So when I went to join another corp, I created the CEO and let him be the boss and continue the retail business in Stacmon.
I have another alt, Crew Hauler, who had just a few hours worth of training and he can fly an Indy. He flys locally to pick up items and does hauling duties.
So with only VERY minimal training time, I have someone who acts as head of the corp, one who hauls for the corp locally; while I can freely use my main to move freely about Eve and join another corp if I want. Meanwhile those 2 guys continue a stream of income for me.

As for the buyer having to pick up goods thats BS a lot of the time I use an alt to aquire goods for my main, not due to worrying ppl wont deal with me but because Im usually on the edge of the galaxy and busy.
Much easier to have an alt in Empire space get the goods delivered to him then next time my main is passing pick up that way, or have my alt deliver to my main.
BTW its always a good bargaining tool to say "ok pal I'll give you that much if you deliver"

Two alts in different regions helps with market research. Hard to see how an alt helps with the RP thing though. Anyway, forget all that, alts are great when you think of an amusing character name.

Alts allow people to be less accountable for their actions. They reduce the already shaky sense of realism. People are forced to use alts to stay competitive.
While alts do provide advantages, I'd prefer if nobody could use them, not even 2 paid accounts. That would help any persistent world RPG.
