Hello! I am new to Eve and trying to setup a ship/skill set that while be semi useful fairly quickly. I understand that skills take a lot of time I just want to find a ship to travel well with a battlecruiser (my Brother). He has been playing for the past 6 months and has offered to bank roll my endeavors.
So I guess my question is what would be a better goal an assault frigates or an Interdictor? I am just trying to find a useful ship to partner with him and to also solo missions. I figure its better to have a goal early so I don't waste a lot of skill training on skills that will not help me progress to a useful partner. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

if your going to be doing missions then I'd go with a SB
you'd have to train up missles but it's a very very powerful ship
If you thinking PvP assault frigates make great boats. and they are good in PVE
either way by going for AF's you could also go for SB with not to much difference in skill points
plus in a SB you could scout for him

I don't quite know what SB is either. Especially not something that requires missile training. Unless it's a typo and means BS for Battleship. --- Currently flying a PvE geared Crusader and Prophecy |

ok SB is a stealth bomber. and why you are thinking of going T2 ships all ready is beyond me. im working on getting up to flying BSs affectivly (getting all the suport skills lvled up). then ill go for T2 ships starting with the SB. and working up from there. A man of meany words dosent have much to say, but a man of few words has a lot to say. So pay attion. |

go for it that's what I did. and other than some skills that would be pointless to get to lvl 5 my AF is maxed out in power. it all comes down to fitting now. as soon as i could fly one my frig module skills where already there :)
and then with those missile skills you could move to missile boat too I suppose but I like smaller ships :P

Thanks MotherMoon you have been very helpful :) I never really looked at a SB that sounds like a fun little option:)

Not flaming here, but jumping right into a BS for pvp is a bad Idea. BS Pilots should be amongst the most expierenced pilots in your fleet/gang/team. If your support skills are bad, your gonna be one of those really embarassing kills that you hear about on the forums. Even for Pvp its bad. Sure you get a lot more HPs, but for ratting in low sec a AF is easier on the wallet, and far safer. Train your support skills up first, otherwise your gonna be paying a lot of insurance premiums.
To the OP, I would train AF for pve, ceptros/dictors for pvp, and Sbombers for missions

Go for a Caracal first, then a Drake. The skills required for each are complimentary and the training shouldn't take you too long. For PVE solo and in small gangs, you'll be more use in one of these ships and a passive tanked Drake is very forgiving!
After that, take a look at AF's.

Well im not a PvPer i mainly run missions and if not that im out mining. Also i havent even trained BS yet. Im working on getting all the suport skills up to at least lvl 4 acrost the board. I can confidently run lvl 2 missions and know that i cant handel lvl 3's till i get the suport skills up.
To the OP haveing a end goal is good for me its being able to fly all my races T2 ships and some of the other races T1 ships. I might get up to Capitol class ships eventualy but thats meany years away due to all the ideal suport skills that i need to have. I would suggest training up to battlecruiser (BC) level first, and once you are comfortable in that, start training assault frigates (AF) or whatever else you want.
Why?
Battlecruisers: -Will be effective in PvE -Can be effective in PvP -Reasonably cheap and will be covered by insurance -Are reasonably easy to get into
By the time you are comfortable in your race's BC, you will have a better idea of which ship you would like to train next. Also, many of the advanced ships aren't extremely effective unless you already have quite a few skills trained.

I've found AF's to be very useful as a compliment to larger ships in small gangs, as well as solo mission runners. If I'm doing a lvl 3 myself and need a tank, the Jaguar handles it with ease. If I want the highest DPS I can get for helping kill 1.5 mil spawns or mission rats, the Wolf takes the cake there. Plus, the support skills you need for AF's are good to have for every ship, and they are necessary to train for HACs, which are also an excellent addition to any gang.
Dictors are far less flexible in that they're designed to do one thing and do it incredibly well. Yes, they also melt frigates with ease, but if you're just going for anti-frig then training destroyers to 5 is kind of a waste. I'd stay away from them unless you join a 0.0 corp that needs bubble blowers. _____________________________________

My brother runs a Drake and passive tanks. I am currently using a Cormorant or a merlin depending on what I am doing. I am finding that they really use a lot of the same types of weapons and skills. I think I am more suited in a small ship as support over going into a bigger ship like a battleship.
Thanks everyone for your imput you are helping me shape my direction!
