I have been experiencing an odd problem with Vista and Microsoft has been no help, so maybe one of you guys knows whats up; I cannot get mp3s to play smoothly with Vista. It seems to take about 20 seconds for WMP to load them up and then every song skips at about 30 seconds from the end. I have tried the Zune player too, and the results are the same. If anyone has ANY idea how to fix this it would be great.

Have you done an upgrade to vista? Check your Audio drivers and codecs, i'm sure DS can provide you with a link to the codec pack, he does love giving it out ^^

Edited by: Miss Anthropy on 01/07/2007 18:43:55 As far as I can tell, Vista behaves differently on everyone's computer. For example; DVD's (bog standard ones, not Blu-Ray or HD-DVD) are grainy when I play them on Vista if I use them on anything other than Media Centre. I've tried playing them on PowerDVD, WinDVD and Zoom Player and they always look pixelated and grainy. This was actually my main reason for switching back to XP. No one else I've spoken to has had this problem. I'm guessing Vista probably thinks my 19 inch CRT monitor isn't good enough for it.
MP3's on the other hand, played fine on my Vista install. Your best option is to hunt around on tech forums to see what you can come up with.

The problems you are experiencing are caused by the Vista copy protection services and programs...
DVD's are grainy on anything else than Media Center because 'Vista can't insure they're genuine, so it downgrades the image'. MP3's might be skipping a lot because Vista is trying to check whether the file is 'genuine' or not.
In short:
Congratulations for buying Vista! Have fun with your piece of junk while Microsoft installs yet another golden toilet in their offices.

I didn't buy Vista, it came back with my laptop after I sent it in for repairs, everything is up to date, and I really just wanna be able to play music without a delay, skipping, or using Itunes. This is the only issue I have had with Vista, everything else seems fine. I really have no complaints, except this. I will keep searching tech forums, but you guys seem to be just as smart, and I don't get the "OMFG why doesn't he know this stuff already" treatment that I get on some of the tech forums. So if anyone knows ANYTHING about fixing it I would greatly appreciate it.

So basically Microsoft have put all DVD Decoder programs (such as WinDVD, Cyberlink PowerDVD, etc) out of business with Vista. If I was one of them I'd sue Microsoft. They've put yet more competition out of business. Of course, they'll use Hollywood pressure as their excuse.

Not exactly. They just have to pay MS to get 'authorization' to play HD content, otherwise Vista just defaults to unprotected mode which downgrades the quality of what you're trying to play.
Vista sucks. I've seen articles of people who can't play their home videos at all because Vista can't find the licence for it, thinks it's copied copyrighted material and blocks it out.

Had it since shortly after launch and I haven't had a single problem with Vista. Well worth my money, for sure. Everything works well and most things work considerably better/faster than with XP. Well, there is all that "allow this and that" stuff, I guess. But, other than that, its way more efficient and stable than XP ever was...so far, anyway. Plus, unlike on XP, the Zune software actually works for me on Vista, lol.

Biggest upgrade ever.
I've had Vista, and upgraded to XP. Lost like 50, 60% of my fps in games, even on DX10 card.
Only realised other day Microsoft expect Vista only gamers to subscribe to the Microsoft Live service, the one on XBOX360.

I'm pretty sure that PC Gamer did a write-up about this a few months back saying that there would be two types of Microsoft Live membership (Silver and Gold, or something like that). One option is free and the other isn't. The only difference between the two is that you can play rated tournaments on the paid subscription.
Still, it doesn't bode too well. Multiplayer gaming use to be exclusively free (not including MMOG subscription based games of course). Now Microsoft wade in and, as usual, feck things up and try to make a profit to boot.

Suffering from the same **** here.. If the Ventrilo or TS client is not highlighted.. the push to talk button ceases to function..
Its not just with Eve running either.. I've seen it happen with several games on Vista.
I'm still ****ed off about them stopping support for 2k! I hate xp too!

seriously, there are too may problems aroud with vista, tech support ppl are getting headaches. face it, vista only works unless you dont change a iota on your pc. and this is a faulty concept, pcs are and were taylored to and by the user. limiting this simply wrong.
Quote: you have a problem with ms making money?
no, i don't have any problem with any corporation making money, it's the WAY HOW they make it, i'm not happy with. ms stated nowhere in the normal avarage joe ads or advertises that drm or the other security stuff may cause things to malfunction, or even worse play with downgraded performance. does a warning display when vista cannot find a license and dongrades? i think not. so it deliberately hides that fact. i tried to explain to someone who is a normal USER why drm may caus troubble, he said two things: - stop this thee-letter-high-tech-stuff - i put a dvd in my pc and push play, like a video cassete, why sould it not work if the disk is ok?
Quote: vista is fast
if you want to see fast install win95 on a pentium4. have you seen performance benchmarks for vista on laptops? they are not good, especially the power consumpion is worse than xp.
Quote: if you dont like vista, just don't install
did that, yet the cache folder of eve moved with the last patch beacuse of vista compatibilty. for everybody, so it still affects me even if i deliberatly "stay away from it" -- Tempus fugit -- |
