I drive the airport to begin my voyage to Israel, where I will spend a month. I arrive at the airport, get my boarding pass, go through security, and get to the gate. Everything seems perfectly normal; I'm well over an hour early.
A portent of what's to come blares over the loudspeakers.
One volunteer needed; a flight is overbooked. The volunteer gets the same flight tomorrow upgraded to first class for free, and a free flight anywhere in the continental United St--oh wait, volunteer slot taken. Sorry everyone.
I finally go to board my plane only to find that I've been bumped off. Now, I bought my ticket 3 months in advance to make a connection in New York, at JFK. Apparently well over a dozen people were bumped off this already very small flight... almost all of who had connections to international flights not long after.
After nearly an hour of deliberating I finally get a new flight, plus 250 dollars in credit. I think the hassle is over. Oh hell no its not.
This new flight isn't to JFK. Its to Laguardia airport, 30 minutes away, with a coupon for a free taxi fare. And even more unbelievable: the flight is a Delta Airlines flight. Now my original flight was American Airlines, and the ticket for the Delta flight said American Airlines--yes, that's right, American Airlines bumped me onto a Delta flight!
I asked about my luggage, of course. They insisted it would go on the JFK plane, land at JFK, and I would go separately on Delta, get to JFK via taxi, pick up my luggage, and make my connection to the El Al flight to Israel.
Well, in the end, everything worked out except the luggage, which has disappeared into the netherworld of the airlines, leaving me nothing but the clothes on my back, two baggage claim slips, and my laptop+equipment.
I hope I manage to get the luggage delivered to me before my clothes become completely unwearable. I mean its not as if I could wash the clothes I have on anyways... the soap's in the luggage too.

You'd think in this day and age things liek this wouldn't be happening...
I hope nothing happens with our flights for our band-tour to Poland later this year... 25 teenagers, instruments and luggage... help.

It's totally discraceful the way airlines overbook flights as a matter of course.
The phrase "have their cake and eat it" fits the situation perfectly!

Hope it all works out OK. Just be glad you weren't connecting in the UK, what with the terrorist stuffs yesterday. --------

I think DS got owned.
Ah thats sucks man. I would be raging so much that I would be on the phone to the airline and sending them the bill for th phone call and a bill for my time wasted in phoning them. I think they are supposed to inform you of having being bumped by at least asking you to come and see them before boarding starts. In fact I don't think they are allowed to bump you. I think they have to have a good go at getting volunteers for a while then start to bump people but negotiate with them. I would look into that one mate.
