I dunno if this would be a bit too "backwards" for the Eve universe but, how about chemical lasers that use chemical ammo rather than cap?
Fancy discussing what potential advantages and disadvantages they should have over standard lasers besides the obvious drastically reduced cap consumption.

NOBODY thinks this would be a good idea??
Come on! Comments! Thoughts! Please?

Isn't this called a cap injector?
Cap injector uses reaction to create energy, energy goes to cap. Lasers use cap. About the only thing lasers have going for them is not using ammo, make them use ammo and STILL do primarily em damage and you'll have even more complaints -----

No it's not a cap injector. A chemical laser is a completely different thing. Use wikipedia to see what I mean.
Also, none of the other race's ammunition takes up a slot, so comparing cap injectors to ammunition is apples and oranges.
If the only thing lasers have going for them is not having to use ammo then lasers have NOTHING going for them - the fact that they use cap instead of ammo is a DISADVANTAGE. It means that they run out of cap really quickly, and makes them very vulnerable to nos setups.
A chemical laser on the other hand, maybe with less EM damage and more heat damage... a whole new range of setup possiblities would open up.

Link to best named heavy cap injector, which is titled Heavy Electrochemical Capacitor Booster I

A chemical laser uses CHEMICALS MIXED WITHIN THE WEAPON to create the beam.
A solid state laser uses ELECTRICAL CHARGE from an EXTERNAL CAPACITOR to excite a doped crystal to create the beam.

and what exactly would a chemical beam be used for? melting ice, or just cleaning my ship..
remember that every ship have shields and i dont think a chemical based weapon would do anything near the damage of curent eve weapons to actualy be posed as a threat.
i can se a usage for this weapon once one can make planetary bases, terraform the planet and have masive city's down there and just fire up the beam and start whiping the habitable life up

Edited by: Natalia Fachiri on 03/07/2007 14:58:31 First, if you have an idea such as thin, take the itme to write down what your idea does (eg what a chemical laser does) so evryone can see where you are getting at, or at least provide a link so people can easily learn it with minimal effort. People who play eve arent neccessarily knowledgable about these things beyond a Star Wars movie level.
On topic: would a chemical laser be able to 'realistically' do damage types other then EM or thermal? If not, there is no need to add it in. If it could, I am all for it to buff the poor Amarr ^^
PS: Cap boosters are batteries, not laser charges. Batteries (contemporary ones ^^ ) use chemicals to store energy. This does not make them fit in any way, shape, or form to be used to fuel the reaction of a chemical laser. The acids in a battery would probably destroy the laser instead.
