some random question :
Can someone living in China connect to TQ from there ? Or is he forced to connect to the chinese one instead ?
If yes, does that mean someone moving in China, say for work, is forced to connect to the chinese server ?
Thanks for the answers.

It will depend on the client used to connect I imagine.

will depends on the client as to what ip address it looks to for connection status, taking TQ's client will allow connection to TQ, however you will bounce around the world quite a bit so you might notice soem slow down.

I just had a person interview to join my corp that said he lived in Taiwan. Not China I know (which may be different due to Chinese law) but certainly geographically very close. So if there is something prohibiting people over there from joining TQ I do not think mere geographic location is what does it.

Well, the media tells me that China is a communist nation with strict anti-information policies to keep their citizens happy ith what they give them and that they regulate their internet feircly - so I'd guess that no - you can't connect to European game servers from China.

you can, but you need to go through a proxy server.
and yes, the chinese government has the world's BEST spyware system in the world.

Legally (from the Chinese law point of view), if EVE was one of the blocked items on the "public list", no. I am not sure wether it's the case, but seing how CCP had to open up shop in China with a separate cluster, one can only conclude that indeed, EVE is one of the "blocked things" too.
Neither a Chinese nor a non-Chinese residing in China should attempt to bypass governmental firewalling to gain access to "the outside world" internet and related services... unless, of course, he gets a special permission to do so (and I'm quite sure they wouldn't give it out lightly). You might assume however (using the abused stereotype of "chinese goldfarmer") that they would allow connections for purpose of farming... but that's going a step too far, IMHO... is it ?
Ileggaly, though, that's a completely different matter. It should be possible (albeit difficult, and with nasty consequences if caught) to do it. Doesn't mean you should try it, quite the opposite. Would you want to risk jailtime for playing a game ? I know I wouldn't.

Speaking off the China server, does any one know where I can find the Territory Maps for Eve China? It would be interesting to see what regions are under dispute over there.

ROFL: You're making a lot of assumptions here! This is CHINA, not the USA or some other country where you actually have things like Freedom and Rights!
So: China does indeed censor/control its populace. They've been doing it for ... oh ... Recorded History? The Communists are certainly continuing it. And its not just one leader...its a Political System. Disregarding the laws in China tends to get you executed, so no to the Proxy Server idea. And I bet you can't 'choose to leave' either.

Yeah I heard about another MMO - planetside - that had to open a separate cluster over there and rewrite some of the back story so that democracy wasn't mentioned. I assume the same holds true for CCP. Why are you still reading? Its over. Continue to the next post.

It's ironic that the only ones who really fall for CCP (and I don't mean the company) propoganda are westerners.
TQ's accessible. Oh, no doubt it's on some list or other for blocked sites. But there's a big difference in that country between laws that are on the books and laws that actually get enforced (and for that matter, "laws" that aren't on the books but do get enforced, unfortunatly ). Yeah, there's censorship, but if it were enforced to the extent that it's actually effective, then the country would be bankrupt, and if they shot every violator they found, the country wouldn't be overpopulated.
And proxies, are actually not that hard to get if you know where to look. Hell, some programs have TV commercials in HK and TW. My favorite is one where they show this giant hammer and sickled being blown up by the "Fire Phoenix," the name of the proxy program. Of course, this is all marketted strictly towards "visitors" only.
How do I know this? Friends and acquaintances, long term and nearterm on the mainland who play EVE. I've never tried logging when I visit, but finagling access to some other stuff isn't that difficult. Though I get funny looks from the people sitting next to me in the cafe.

My fav. recent funfact from, I think it was CNN? They sampled Chinese people in China asking about the Tienamen Square (sp?) incident - no one even knew what they were talking about.
Totally removed from history over there.

wonder if they were asking the right questions, or doing it in a way that would have elicited a more honest reponse.
"six four," the date the **** went down, is talked about in almost the same way that nine eleven is here in the states. What did so and so do after six four, he left for the states after six four, etc.
it is a bit insulting to their intelligence to imply that nobody in that country knows what's going on, especially with the huge gaping holes the government leaves in its net.

Edited by: Caios on 02/07/2007 19:12:40 The blocking's content based, and pretty dynamic. So one day the BBC would be unblocked, but the next it won't, based on the wording of the articles. Eve forums might be blocked now due to this thread, but just to make sure:
falun gong falun dafa tibet tiananmen massacre china democracy taiwan independance falun gong falun dafa tibet tiananmen massacre china democracy taiwan independance
there.
only way to tell if a site is permablocked, unfortunatley is to fly out and punch it in. hell, even then, you might get different results depending on whether you're doing it from a cafe, private home or a hotel (or which hotel, even). if you find a way around it, i wouldn't worry too much about the People's Armed Police breaking down the door and dragging you off, especially if you've got a foreign passport.

You're not doing it right. =P
Because Tiananmen Square could be a lovely tourist attraction in a country ruled by the principals of socialist democracy that upholds freedom and liberty in its constitution (this is actually true, interestingly enough, just that the constitution has always been ignored), and promises the world a showcase of progressive human rights during the olympics.

IIRC - it was college students they were asking - though - as I stated above - you can hardly beleive anything the media says anyway.

Actually, it's believable, since college kids are more likely to know what could get them the wrong kind of attention from the government.
I was a barely coherent little kid in the states when it happened, and even I remember getting dragged on a roadtrip to take part in a support rally, and the candlelight vigil that happened a few days later.
Believe me, they know.
Edit: i really need to stop whoring this topic, but it's one that strikes a personal cord and I'm bored at work. nevertheless, i'll shut up now.
