This question has always bothered me. There are so many to choose from, and oh so much technical jargon! Usually I just go lazy and get whatever is easiest, but I need to make a decision, damnit!
This computer is still running Windows Media Player 11, and I need to change it. I want something that can play all the major video and audio formats, can handle streaming, and isn't to resource intense. Easy to use is a bonus, seeing as less techno-able people will be using this computer, aswell as me.
So, name your program (or set of programs) that you recommend! --------

Media Player Classic.
Looks like "old" media player, but isn't. Compact, does everything I need.
Alternatively, Video Lan Client (VLC Media Player) is good too, but I just prefer the look and feel of MPC.

Is there anything to put between the two? --------

Don't really understand what you mean.
Download both and see which you prefer. They are unintrusive and don't crap all over your PC.

I mean, is there anything that either can do better? Any formats of files that one can play and the other can't? Any wonderful feature that one has, which the other lacks? --------

Ah, well, I use VLC for MP4 files that I can't seem to play in Media Player Classic.
I haven't really poked around to try to fix it in MPC though.
Also VLC is very good at playing "broken" files. Half failed downloads, that sort of thing.

I idn't think the VLC utilised the CCCP, being that it uses internal codecs? I always gathered that the CCCP utilised Media Player Classic, by default. --------

I just looked it up. Still, good to know that VLC has been flawless for you. Score another one to it. --------

Use MPC + the CCCP.
VLC is a standalone player; it doesn't use directshow codecs like the CCCP. Its good because it works even if your codecs are farked up. However, it isn't perfect; its H.264 support is far from perfect and its missing some features, like styled subtitles, which anime fansubbers tend to use a lot (which is why the makers of the CCCP don't fully recommend VLC).
Mplayer is the most compatible player that has built-in codecs like VLC does. Its also cross-platform.

MPlayer is nice, but its a bit intense. Not exactly user friendly, from a non-power-user perspective. I think I'll give CCCP + MPC a try, unless there are any other contenders. --------

I agree with this post.
You should really check out KMPlayer its basically vlc (built in codecs which imo are better than VLC as you can manually adjust things like where subs are placed on the screen in real time or resync audio with keyboard shortcuts). It has been built to an extent to act like winamp you can even use alot of the plugins made for winamp.
