OP - Interesting question!
(FYI - My current background in EVE is 0.5 high skills miner and mid-level industrialist - also have a number of Black Projects in the works that will take a few months to complete yet. And god help those on my Sierra One Hotel Tango list then...)
EVE wouldn't be EVE without pirates. It'd be a lot more boring without them around. They add a little spice to the game. They're as necessary as any in the game are!
I can understand why many of them do what they do, and properly done it's fun for all parties involved. It even gives some of us the necessary motivation to become PVPers (or even pirates) so as to return the favors. In spades!
That said, there are two things (this is just my opinion) that don't do the pirate image much good -
The endless ganking of helpless, low value targets in low sec (in 0.0 and Empire a gank is strictly business and everyone should understand that!) - such as a BC or cruiser taking down an unarmed, unescorted hauler. That seems to be the staple diet of many pirates. Now, an inty or an AF going after a BC or a BS and having a damned good fight win or lose - that's *style*! But endlessly killing targets that can't even shoot back? It really is no more risky a pastime than shooting rocks in 0.9 and requires a lot less SP to do.
- which segues into the other thing that I've noticed - the whacko fundamentalist mentality that says that "EVE should be only direct PVP with no high sec, with me killing anything, anywhere, any time I like and anyone who disagrees with me is a noobloozerllamacarebear!" It actually does seem a little stronger amongst the pirate players than anywhere else. Those people ain't too much fun to be around because they don't make for a fun game for anyone but themselves. And they don't make for an interesting game for anyone.
Plenty of room for everyone, I think - just wish we had more pirates with panache and style! They're probably some of the best people even "carebears" can get to encounter in the game!
